Windows 10 Creators Update

I just did an install, about the only difference that I could see was the installer didn't try to be as underhanded and manipulative in relation to forcing the user to run a Microsoft account.

More to it than that. The setup is now voice enabled and actually speaks in plain language a lot of what the options are about, if one doesn't disable it. At this point, anyone calling Windows 10 spyware is being a bit silly. There are a LOT of options that are presented here as to what's going on and controlling it. Spyware doesn't do this.

I hope I can update to it on the 5th of April using Windows upgrade assist.

Does every Win10 thread have to be the same people expressing their same dissatisfactions?

I hear you. But I think it's a great thing that there is this debate until it gets hyperbolic or when people misunderstand processes that aren't necessarily evil. On the telemetry stuff, sure an off switch for everything would be great and I have no problem with it. But automatic telemetry is useful for maintenance purposes, it's not about selling personal data but I get the concern. But if everyone disabled it, that's valuable data for quality purposes that's gone.

The update process is something though that's grounded in a continuous delivery model and it's pretty much how it's done by developers at all levels these days. Updates are cumulative and interdependent and you create different code branches based on deliver cadence. Most Linux dstros do exactly the same thing. Yes you have the ability to pick and choose updates but that doesn't magically solve dependency issues from dependent prior updates. With source code though you have the ability to mix and match components that can't be done with Windows.

I tried it out. I ended up with a few busted apps including one for wireless display media and another that seemed to be for VR. The VR app has an icon, but doesn't seem to function. The wireless display app just has a white icon and seems to work, but it also keeps trying to update itself unsuccessfully, too.

I use the Control Panel a decent amount, so getting rid of the right click function is annoying to me. Especially considering those things (sound mapping, Nvidia panel, device manager) don't have "settings" menu equivalents. I'll probably just end up creating a shortcut to it on the taskbar, but it's annoying I even have to. Don't hide things until people no longer actually use them.

Seems like more of the default Windows apps can no longer be uninstalled. My start apps list is long as hell now. I still wish I could put those modern app shortcuts in a folder. Classicshell lets you do that, but it looks janky.

You can do it now from an Insider

The Power User menu is easily configurable, you can use this to customize however you want, I used this to add back Control Panel: http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.30

Perhaps one of the most ironic things about Windows 10 and displeasure over it, there's tons of options to customize and control so much of the complaints but no in the box tools to do it. Like the Power User menu, it's been configurable in this manner since it first appeared in Windows 8.0 five years ago.

hopefully the new update won't change any of my settings and tweaks back to whatever default options MS wants

I just did the "setup.exe" upgrade on my work machine, and while most of my stuff is default anyway, anything I didn't expect to change, didn't change. It didn't re-install Minecraft or that stuff, everything does what it's supposed to do. The most inconvenient thing is it opens Edge in a different window size (to advertise Edge..) and I had to resize that window. So far, that's it.

What's it to you? Seriously. And how would you know it's _not_ about "selling personal data", unless you're an MS employee with access to internal policy they've refused to make public? MS has never actually spelled out what is being collected, and why. If the telemetry is so benign, why the lack of transparency? At least Google's honest enough to say "We'll use your data for advertising, and we're putting it in writing. Here are some useful apps for free". Microsoft? "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".

"If everyone disabled it" = false dilemma. As long as full telemetry is the default, a majority of users won't disable it because they aren't even aware its an option or don't care. The hypocrisy? The people defending and downplaying telemetry as "no big deal" would be the first ones to turn it OFF the moment it was an option. I'd lay any money on it.

Telemetry/privacy is the #1 issue causing Windows 10 marketshare to remain brickwalled at 25%. Microsoft knows it. So for them to continue to keep their heels dug in and take on further bad PR, lost user trust and defections back to Windows 7, there's gotta be a lot more to it than just "maintenance data" for "quality purposes". Gimme a break.

Occam's Razor: MS actually disclosing what user data is being tracked and collected would anger users and ultimately kill the product far faster than the marketshare and uptake they're conceding by not disclosing it. Simple as that.

Huh? You're the one that would have to be the Microsoft employee if you're the one saying that Microsoft's public statements on this are inaccurate or false.

IIRC, tomorrow Microsoft will offer up the final ISO for the early-adopters? Has anyone by any chance seen it out and about already early? I'm talking the final ISO, not any insider or release preview etc. image.

The official ISOs probably won't come out until next week on the 11th. But 15063 is the CU RTM, there's no difference insider or not.

It's widely assumed it will be the same as 1607 where the "insider preview" ISO just got renamed to the "release" ISO and life went on. There's nothing in the current ISO to indicate they need to change it.

Outside of the weird (unfinished?) apps for for "Wireless Display Media Viewer" and "Mixed Reality Portal" I don't think there are any issues plaguing the 15063 release. Those apps could very well be fixed via the store on 4/11, so it's not like they matter much.

The ISO that has been going around for a while is the legit RTM. MSDN was updated and shows SHA1: CE8005A659E8DF7FE9B080352CB1C313C3E9ADCE as being en_windows_10_multiple_editions_version_1703_updated_march_2017_x64_dvd_10189288.iso

Are the busted Wireless Display Media Viewer and Mixed Reality Portal apps still there?

Yeah Bitches =)

even has a tutorial open up

Blue Light Reduction is great it doesn't override your current Nvidia Desktop settings (unlike Flux) the slider goes all the way Trump Orange if you want.

They needed that feature back in 2011

Why is it Microsoft's fault that 3rd parties haven't lifted a finger in two years?

Because if it ain't broke why fix it? Those programs work just fine and the Control Panel has more paths to it (+ it's in every version of Windows) than the Settings menu that is exclusive to Windows 10.
Plus, most of those items are from Microsoft. The speaker mapping panel and device manager are tied to Windows. They're dropping the ball on themselves.

3-D Paint program is ok but I played with some better ones in the past.... like Kai's Power Goo filters which I no longer have 3-D text is pretty cool....

Sound Mapping? If you mean routing a playback device, you can do that by clicking the sound icon by the clock and clicking the carat.

nVidia Control Panel and Desktop Manager are under "right-click on desktop" and have been there for years, if those are what you mean.

Device Manager is still under the win-x menu. It was not removed.

The custom colors are really nice "They have a color picker and sliders for both" for both the background and the Task bar I wish it skinned the browser but I use Firefox.
You can choose a white background or near white for the desktop instead of whatever color they had picked before. Now I have a patel blue task bar and a milk white blue background. It doesn't bother me cause the blue light reduction filter is turned on.

Maybe Domingo is talking about them removing options from the menu that pops up with you right-click on the Start button. They removed a few handy shortcuts...

The command prompt is gone along with control panel. It's very easy to configure this menu with something like Winaero, the ability to do it has been there since Windows 8. A lot of the stuff that gets argued here is actually configurable, even telemetry, there's just no in the box UI to do it.

That's kinda my issue. There's no way to do this without other tools. I miss the days of Windows XP and 7 where you could configure nearly everything under the sun right out of the box.
Sure, I know I *can* bring the Control Panel right click back. I just find it an odd decision to hide it in the first place. It's still an integral part of the OS and hiding it affects power users...the exact people that are using it.
I feel the same way about not being able to organize or put modern apps in a folder. I know it's possible (Powershell can do it in an ugly way) but MS intentionally doesn't give us the tools to do so.

or you can pin control panel to your start menu and change the option to show command prompt instead of powershell. its not that hard to do.

Anyone else having issues with Firefox on Creators Update? I keep getting black screens.

My only usage issue with 10 and office 2016 is Microsoft's continual insistence towards flat, lifeless, shit-for-contrast user interface presentation,

I'm sick of playing whack a mole on title bars trying to find the right one, and the right spot, to move a fucking window. Working with stacked windows is horrible.

Windows 10/office 2016 has NO life to it.

Microsoft. My desktop or laptop is NOT a GD tablet ! You are killing my eyesight!

Thank goodness for Object Desktop.

Really looking forward to this update as a gamer. I only use my Win 10 machine for gaming, do you think it's safe at this point to do a wipe / reinstall with the media creation tool? Or just wait until the 11th? I'm worried about stuff like Intel RST drivers / Audio drivers / etc.

The same version that was declared "final" last week is the same one they're deploying to people who use the update tool. You can just download the ISO and go for it - it's the same thing that's coming on the 11th. The only issues people have reported are a couple borked modern app icons.

My game bar isn't loading with Win+G anymore. Anyone know if certain things can disable it?

try it again but with the game in windowed mode. some of my games have to be done like that then go back to full screen. if you try and open game bar and the screen just flashes that's the prob.
