Wind Waker HD

Skyward Sword was an awesome game if you can look past the motion controls. It might be up their in the top few for me if you didn't have to pretend you were flying a wiimote around your living room.

I enjoyed WW, but I don't remember it well. I mix it up with the DS line that uses the similar graphics engine. I'm looking forward to replaying it. I started it a while back and stopped when they announced the HD remake.

It was the motion controls that killed it for me indeed. I played it a LOT, like, got the master sword powered up and did those scary as shit missions where you had to avoid those giant armours that followed you everywhere when you ran out of time. But the game felt bit too long, even artificially extended. Diving those god damn notations, OMFG who thought that was a good idea! This combined with frustration with motion controls (sometimes they worked like a charm, but usually crap out on you when things get hectic) I just gave up.

I know I am near the end but I just cant pick it up anymore. I just want classic controls so I can finish the damn thing. Or maybe I should just watch a playthrough...

Are you talking about Spirit Tracks or Phantom Hourglass, perhaps? That's what I remember from those games too.

Zelda should not be played with a damn stylus.

Skyward Sword. I was talking about these missions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGR1WLBAgkA
good god they were scary! I managed to do all 3 of them and progressed bit further before putting the game on hold for a while. Where it still is...

Its kinda sad that I have not found strength to finish it because I really did care for the story and I want to see it to the end.

Oooooh, I do remember those now. They were annoying, but I just pushed myself to complete them. The story was definitely worth seeing to the end, though, so if I were you, I'd kick my own butt to push past it.

Skyward Sword had a pretty nice story, but it still didn't break my top 5 favorite Zelda games.

I got my Wind Waker HD with the Ganondorf "statue" today. It's a rubbery plastic and the bottom sword is deformed. A guy I know who's into miniatures said to try a blow dryer on low or warm water to mend it back into shape.

Yeah, the blow dryer will probably help. I've heard of boiling things made of soft plastic to harden it, but I would NOT RECOMMEND THAT for PAINTED soft plastic.

My girlfriend got me Wind Waker HD for our anniversary and so far I am really enjoying it. Granted, I never really played the GC version (I own it, but never really played it... I missed out) but I really like the art style, the animations and the controls. It plays very well. I'm pleased with it :)

I finally got to play it this morning. It looks great. My only complaint so far is the motion blur occasionally when attacking frantically.

My favorite has always been ocarina of time - but Skyward sword came darn close. The motion controls ruined it for me - too gimicky and at times frustrating. I owned and played wind waker for the gamecube. It was a decent game and I can see how it could make a person's "best Zelda game ever" list (even though it's not mine). $50 seems a little steep - but if you play the whole thing through, you'll more than get your money's worth.

I think it's worth the $50. It's not just a simple upscale cash grab. They definitely did some work to the graphics, the questing, integrated it with the Miiverse which is actually pretty cool. They fixed a lot of the gameplay complaints from the original game. I'm really liking it so far.

This isnt a feeling I feel often but playing this game again made me genuinely happy! Nostalgia tends to color games with rosey colors and when you return to them they arent as good as you remembered but not this one. This is as good as it was back then and some ways even better. I have smiled like an idiot last few days playing this, feeling a pure joy.

I fricking love this game, every second of it.

I got the Wind Waker Wii U bundle. So far I like it, I thought the blooming would irritate me but its not as bad as I was expecting. I never finished the wind waker, and I can't bear to see it now on my HDTV. I hope they release Twilight Princess HD based on the gamecube.

I personally like HD remakes especially if its a game I didn't play or never finished in the previous generation.

Oh yeah, about the bloom. Some people have complained about it but I do believe those people have never bothered to properly calibrate their TVs. At worst they are propably using some "Dynamic" preset with way overblown contrast that burns out all bright colours.

Just my thoughts. I like how this remake looks. So nice, bright and cheerily colorful. But then again so was the original, minus the bloom and shadows. :)

Does this game use the Wii U gamepad for controls? and can it be played on just the gamepad itself? I bought the bundle and downloaded the game but have been playing need for speed and Arkham City so i havent fired it up yet

So off screenplay is minus button

Yes you can control the game with the gamepad

But you can also use the pro controller and the screen just for your inventory

Touchscreen serves as a map and inventory. Some weapons, like the bow, can be aimed using the GamePad. You have Off-TV play too.

Wind Waker HD has the option to play with the Gamepad and a TV, Pro controller and a TV, or just the Gamepad itself (without a TV).

All you need to do is hit the + (or -?, or forget which one), and the game instantly drops over to the gamepad and you don't have to bother someone watching TV.

Your right brain fart. It's the minus button drop to the off screen play

This is by far one of the weakest games in the series. The game looks great, but everything about this game is tedious. Twilight Princess was a vastly superior game. The triforce quest is like doing work.

Anouma is just not that smart. Skyward Sword was terrible as well. These overworlds are lazy--flying, sailing...it runs contrary to the core mechanic of the series.

Ocarina 3D and Twilight Princess are two of the best games of all time, in my opinion. A Link to the Past as well. But Windwaker's simply a turd of a game. Charts, joy pendants, a totally empty overworld, having to feed a damn fish to mark every quadrant of the map. This was Anouma running a muck with the series. He did it again with Skyward Sword. Annoying tedious crap. The last real game was Twilight Princess. IMHO. The game LOOKS great, but playing through it is a chore. Why did they charge $50 for this crap?

And to me this is my favourite Zelda. Twilight is definetly a better as traditional Zelda game but Wind Waker is the one I rather pick up. Its just so relaxing and light hearted, simply fun to play. I even love the sailing, I feel so immersed when approaching a island and the seagulls join you. Its little touches like this that makes this THE immersion-gamers Zelda. But thats just me.

BTW, they revamped the Triforce quest in this HD remake, making it less of chore. And fishing out treasures needs less surgical precision than the Gamecube version or so it seems like.

Wut?
No.

I think the first two-thirds of Wind Waker serve up some of the best gaming the series has to offer. But the last bit was incredibly tedious, and it lowered my overall impression of the game. I still really enjoyed it, but I'd place it in the lower rung of 3D titles.

Majora's Mask
OoT
Twilight
Wind Waker
Skyward Sword

Empty overworld is a weird complaint to make against Wind Waker though. Twilight Princess had very little going for it overworld wise. Fortunately it had a pretty enjoyable story until Ganon showed up, and the dungeons were well crafted.

As someone who hasn't played a single Zelda since the original - Wind Waker is fucking fantastic. I love it. For a game that came out a decade ago it's very impressive, and the higher res graphics really are a delight to look at.

The game doesn't feel empty at all to me.

Apparently they had to rush the game back in the day or so I remember. It shows with the poorly thought Triforce segment and having noticeably less dungeons than average Zelda.

My thoughts exactly.

WW is seriously perhaps the second best Zelda game there is. It's combat is refined to perfection from OOT. It offered exploration that even OOT couldn't match and it hit all the right boxes required to make it individual and ultimately an unforgettable Zelda adventure.

TP is great. It was MM but with an even darker theme. The bosses and the design are incredible but WW still offers up the most unique of the Zelda experiences in my mind. WW is still incredibly popular with the exception of MM there was no Zelda game fans wanted more in HD.

I have a feeling we are going to be getting a direct sequel or spiritual successor to MM at the next E3 announcement.

I would put OoT as first, and Wind Waker as second as my favorites, followed by Maroja's Mask. My experiences with TP is probably poisoned by the hamfisted wii remote controls, but even without them, it had a lot of boring parts too. I didn't feel like they really took advantage of the large map. I also liked the sailing parts of WW, so I'm a bit in the minority.

Under $30 on Amazon so this brings it into I might buy it territory...

I'd get it. They tuned up quite a bit, especially the triforce piece treasure hunt at the end of the game. In the original, all of the pieces were required a treasure map to find and then dredge up using the crane, and all of the treasure maps had a seperate side quest associated with them. Now, most of the pieces are just located in the chests where the treasure maps used to be. You still need to get 3 from the ocean floor, but it's a huge improvement.

Got this for Christmas and finally pulled the shrink wrap off today. I spent several hours with the game and just love it. The gamepad integration is terrific...inventory, maps, etc. are there with just a downward glance. Graphics look outstanding on my calibrated 65" plasma.

This may be the first Zelda game I finish after dabbling with the series for decades. I had another thread earlier this year where I was tackling the GC version of the original Zelda on my Wii. I took a hiatus from gaming for the summer and haven't gotten back to that. But I intend to finish this winter. I also want to finish Link to the Past, which I bought new when it was released so long ago and never completed. I also have Ocarina of Time for the 3DS but had to sell my 3DS a few months ago. Will pick up another soon.

Can't wait to get back to Wind Waker. My wife has taken over the Wii U, hooked on NSMBU. Makes me wish I still had my 3DS. :D

When you get your 3DS, try to get a Zelda bundle. A Link Between Worlds is a fantastic Zelda game... I couldn't put it down and finished it in about a week. I don't have a lot of time for gaming these days, so finishing a game in week is a pretty big deal!

Got this for christmas and I'm loving it. I only played about half of the Gamecube version so there's still lots of this that will feel new to me. Being able to switch to the tablet screen is handy too incase the wife decides that she wants to watch something on tv while I keep playing :D

That's what I intend to do. Going to finish Wind Waker HD before I jump though.

Awesome, man. It is, indeed, a blast to play. :D

I've spent a lot of time playing this game within the past few days. I played until the end on the GameCube and stopped there for some reason and I must say that I don't remember most of the game from then so that's a plus. Maybe what I'm not remembering is changes that were made. I don't remember getting the fast sail and I don't remember the Nintendo club (I assumed that was a new addition). I just assume that in the past I may have ignored some things.

I'm mostly impressed with the visual improvements and how well the graphics blend together. Sometimes when the visuals work well together it looks like a cartoon drawing/animation instead of a computer rendering. On the other hand, there is some heavy slowdown in at least a few instances but nothing that affects gameplay.

As far as the audio goes, I've read that the music was supposedly redone but it doesn't sound terribly different to me. Also, Nintendo apparently has a little ways to go when it comes to surround sound. Sound effects play in the proper speakers according to their relative position but when in an echo-y environment the echo effect is only in the front speakers so you don't really get the full effect of the environment as a result.

Using the Wii U controller is nice because most of the time you don't really need to pause the game to change up equipment. It's nice just dragging around the screen.
