I could easily see Windows 7 becoming another Windows XP. While we use a variety of operating systems around here, I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit every day and have no plans of changing in the foreseeable future.

Windows XP was one of Microsoft's greatest successes and greatest failures: A success because it was so rock-solid, a failure because it was so good that many people didn't want to upgrade to Windows Vista. Based on initial looks at Windows 8, Windows 7 may well be the new XP.

Yeah, I hear you Steve. I just hope MS see sence, and give Desktop/laptop users the option to disable Metro, and bring back the Start Menu.

Metro and UI changes aside, Windows 8 is only another service pack for Vista, so I find it offering very little over Win7.

I truly worry that MS has no idea how to make a new OS. Lets hope that Windows 9 can bring something new to the table, other than change for the sake of winning Apple customers over (which is a futile effort) at the detriment of "normal" PC users.
 
Corporations are just now upgrading to Windows 7. They were never going to upgrade to Windows 8.
 
Thats why I call windows 8 Vista 2.0. I see alot of people hating and sticking with windows 7.

every good version of windows always has to have a shitty one follow , but at least the next one aren't as bad as the first rotten egg windows me . . . but yep windows 7 is the new xp :D

Its great on a tablet, but on the desktop do not want .

Yes. Windows 7 is just amazing to be honest. Fast performance, great interface, easy to use and good stuff in general. Vista wasn't that bad for me, but I definitely notice how much better Windows 7 is. Everyone was already excited for it in the beta.

Now Windows 8 seems its a split, a few seem excited and a lot seem pissed off. It will be great for combining phones/tablets with the PC no doubt, but for us who like to have that separate it will probably just be "meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh".
 
It is already as far as I'm concerned. No reason for anyone to stay stuck on XP at this point.

If you want a video capture card to work with no problems, you have to use windows XP 32 bit. The 4GB memory limit is a bummer, tho.

If you want a system that (almost) never crashes, windows XP x64 (or now Win 7 x64) is the way to go; my current game system is Win7x64. The only crashes I get are game related; could be either the video OC or processor oc at that point. :>

I never bothered with Me, Vista, or now win 8 because a few (k? M?) people thinking it sucks is good enough for me to wait and see. :)

I really don't need a "Cool new interface" to really fsck things up.

My main network can't see the net; I still have old hardware with win98 to play the odd old game. If win XP goes totally unpatched, I'll just hide those computers.

I'll bet that if M$ won't support XP, someone else will. :) Probably better, too.
 
I have absolutely no desire or plans to move to Windows 8. I don't use a tablet, I don't want a UI that acts like I do.
 
I am with most people here. First time I am not upgrading to a new microsoft OS. I am sticking to Windows 7 until Microsoft releases a better OS. Windows 7 is rock solid.

Missed 2000 (good), and that Vista wasn't bad, just got bad press and was fine on decent hardware. 95 wasn't bad, it was just kind of new, so there were a few unrefined elements.

What about 3.0/2/1 :p

8 just seems to be Microsoft using their most popular product to try and desperately leverage into a new market segment, instead of releasing something focussed and refined for each platform.
 
Like any public company, microsoft needs a constant stream of income and have moved to a shorter cycle between versions. Which means less innovation between versions.
It's all bout the APP pie $$.
Considering any new device and pc will have windows 8 by default it'll be as successful as any other windows and there's nothing anyone can do bout it.

I dual boot and still use XP-32 for the same reasons; for my capture card and to get the most out of my sound card, I run Win7-64 for gaming and pretty much everything else. I completely skipped Vista and I recommended my customers do the same, which they mostly did. Most of those that didn't ended up complaining what a dog Vista was compared to XP, with some 'downgrading' afterward just for that reason.

I took one look at Win 8 and walked away from it. No f'ing way will I run that abortion on any of my computers. I've been running and servicing Windows systems since day one and IMO Win 8 looks like a great operating system...

if you want your computer to run like a smartphone. Pass.
 
It really depends on how you look at things.

I think Windows 8 will do really well by taking market share away from the iPad, Macbook and Android tablets.

Will it compete or replace Windows 7? Hell no. I can't see Windows 8 in a (non-tablet) corporate environment or even replacing desktops and traditional laptops.

Windows 8 X64 actually performs better than Windows 7 X64, too bad it removes features and the mandatory Metro.
 
Windows Me, Windows Vista, Windows 8. Same shit different day. I'm waiting for Windows 11 before I switch from Win7.
 
They do this stuff I think as half-project revenue I think. Vista was a beta of 7. 8 is no-doubt a beta of 9. Win9 will have the start-menu/etc, my guess.
 
I see windows 8 as running alongside windows 7 and I hope MS supports it as such. Then you'll truly be able to do everything you can on your desktop on your phone or tablet aside from limitations of the hardware itself. You want to run your favorite app from your pc on your tablet? No problem, just install it. Want to use a device on both seamlessly? No problem, plug it into the usb port.

I see this as finally giving the iOS crap a run for it's money, if it's done right. I'm sure the cell carriers are going to try and lock all their shit down as much as possible though. :mad:

But a lot of the PCs that come with Windows 8 are going to be touch capable machines, tablets, convertibles, hybrids and touch all-in-one desktops. I'm one of the few around here that likes Windows 8 because I've been using Windows on touch devices for a long time and on touch capable devices there's really no point to Windows 7.

When you count the new form factors, touch, better performance and battery life and thousands of Metro apps that aren't going to be available to Windows, I think most people who buy Windows 8 machines will probably get to like it for the most part.

This, it has nothing to do with the quality of the OS it is the cost of upgrades. They will not do it unless they have to. We just moved away from 2000 a few years ago after Vista was released. Why, because management didn't want to spend the money. only reason we started moving to windows 7 was due to the change of buying computer from dell instead of making them all inhouse. same when i was in college we didn't jump right to 2000 and that was with us having copies to use, we left a comptuer at NT4 unless we had to replace it or work on it for something major then we upgraded it.

Most places skipped vista not because it sucked and too so long to go to 7 not because it sucked, but cause they are looking at the cheapest route, that isn't paying for upgrades for all the computers, that is waiting till the cycle to replace them comes around. which for most places is probably about 3 - 4 years if they are on a cycle. maybe a little longer. Most probably try to standardize so if they have just been moving to windows 7 they will keep it that way for a few more years. So they will most likely get all their computers to 7 then wait a few years then once the windows 7 computers start to get replaced the first ones get replaced with whatever is out at that time (8 or 9), then the cycle continues... so most likely 8 will be skipped at 9 will be the one that most hit just like how vista was skipped and they hit come the time for 7. Plus you have the conditions of what do your programs support. We had to wait for some programs to die off to get people off of xp, which yes there is xp mode but for most that is too much work to run a program or two.

i know i'll get 8 for both my work desktop and laptop as soon it is released. rest of the network might be a little behind that getting it on anything new.

yup, but that is how it is with every release. when xp came out people bitched about them changing the start menu, bitched about how they added color to it, i recall hearing people talk about how the tonka truck theme and how microsoft made the os for babies, "this isn't what businesses want, they don't want this bright shiny colorfull start menu bull shit" then toward the end everyone was so used to it they didn't want to give it up. XP worked, it didn't have the stability issues of prevoius versions. but that is it, it isn't the greatest thing under the sun. IMHO every release since then has improved windows so much more every time that i have found each release to add changes that i find hard to go away from to use older oses. I go back to xp and i feel like i might as well be using 3.1 due to all the missing features. I think its just a cause of stockholm syndrome for some of these people.

I think the larger question is whether or not Windows 8 will be a Vista release that can be salvaged by later updates... or a WinME release that kills a product line.

Unfortunately for Microsoft the stakes this go-around are significantly higher than they were in previous releases.

Looking at Microsoft's financial records, Microsoft is in the position of desperately needing a massive sales success. Microsoft's traditional profitable divisions have been the Operating System licensing Division and the Office software licensing Division. Outside of that no other division has been profitable, and yes, that includes the Home and Entertainment division with Xbox. Do keep in mind that Microsoft wrote off several billion dollars as non-recoverable, and it is only those write-offs that allow Microsoft to declare Home and Entertainment to be profitable... when the division has still yet to turn a real profit against the real number of expenses.

Microsoft at least had the advantage during the Windows ME years that Win98 was a strong product and Win2000 was a solid enough desktop replacement to hold over users till the Win2k remix of WinXp. This go around Microsoft doesn't have that advantage. There is no other operating system in Microsoft's background that can be remixed into a usable product, a situation that has arisen from Microsoft's insistence on merging all of it's products into a single kernel with a single user-interface.

Microsoft also had the advantage during the Windows ME years that there were no real competitors on the market. Desktop Linux had yet to have it's Mepis Linux, and Apple was still pushing systems built on PowerPC.

This go around Microsoft has several active and visible competitors. Consumers have been broken from the reliance on Microsoft products for computing with commercial devices leveraging Apple's IOS/Mach_BSD and Android/Linux. Apple makes steady sales of their general-usage OSX products. Desktop usage of GNU/Linux distributions has exploded, and Canonical and Linux Mint are pushing retail pre-load deals. Sales of Android/Linux and Chromium/Linux devices are also expected to grow, keeping in mind that electronics juggernaut Sony has already announced ChromeBooks and ChromeBox products for later this year, and will likely be leveraging a Chromium Linux for the Playstation 4. If that wasn't bad enough one of the launch partners Microsoft was counting on for Windows 8, Samsung, turned around and upped their stake in the Linux foundation a day after the Windows 8 product launch was detailed in order to calm down investors convinced Samsung had lost it's mind.

To try and put a fine cap on the point here: the computing market itself has fundamentally changed. Consumers are not buying Windows 7 systems in droves, not because Windows 7 isn't a good operating system, but because consumers no longer NEED a Microsoft product to compute with. Microsoft's casual user market, the market that adopted WinXp in such large numbers, no longer needs to look at Microsoft products to accomplish their casual tasks.

Given how atrocious Windows 8 is a product alone, neverminding other factors like SecureBoot that only the technology literate care about, Microsoft may be very well faced with a product launch that could effectively kill the company. Microsoft needs an operating system that can be salvaged and turned into something that users actually want.

From what I've seen, Microsoft's love affair with the Gnome3 designers means we will not be seeing such an operating system.
 
I remember being amazed by Win 7 after sticking with XP (and hating Vista).

Looks like I'm going to continue to be amazed by Win 7 :p
