Im planning to upgrade to socket M2 next year. Im also planning to buy X-Fi on monday. I was wondering if i will be able to use my X-Fi when I upgrade to M2. I dont want the AGP nightmare to happen again. Perhaps Creative will make PCI-E version of X-Fi soon?

i would say yes atlest 1 there are still alot aof stuff that uses PCI soundcards, TV tuner cards, NICs, most cheap HDD controlers stuff like that

PCI will stay with us for a considerable amount of time. Just imagine the amount of PCI cards vs PCIe (non video!) cards out there.

Until recently ISA slots were still a common sight on new boards, if that's any comfort :)

Socket m2 chipsets havent even been announced so it's not like we know for sure. However, i can bet there will be motherboards with different types of south bridges so more than likely we will have boards with PCI. However, I bet with socket m2 we will also see the first pure PCI-E boards. Also, we might even see boards with integrated X-Fi at that point, which is the only real reason to even keep PCI. Creative said a while back that it technically challenging to create PCI-E sound cards.
I mean everything else out there has or will have pci-e versions, except for sound cards and with most high end boards you have dual nics and 8 sata ports anyway, do you really need more?

Integrated X-FI?!!! Now that would be sweet. I won't be sad to give up my soundstorm if that happens.

What do you mean by "pure PCI-E"?

AFAIK intel has no intention to fade out PCI anytime soon. PCI-E adoption has been slow outside graphics cards. So that makes me think AMD will support PCI for quite a while.

It's kind of funny that Creative labs says its difficult to make a pci-e soundcard vs pci and nvidia said it coulnd't make a pci soundcard (soundstorm) and would need pci-e instead.

As for X-fi going integrated, very unlikely, the licensing cost could be too high for motherboard manufacturers to implement. (remember soundstorm).

By pure PCI-E, I would assume he means a PCI-E only motherboard... no regular PCI.

As far as integrated X-Fi...i dont see why not .The Neo4 has integrated creative sound now. Sure aint x-fi, but its a step above the norm.

I read an interview about the X-Fi that specifically stated they will sell the chips to MB manufacturers.

I heard rumors about creative labs designing a soundchip for MB manufacturers, but I didn't know it was X-fi based.

Anyway you look at it, you're going to spend $75-100 extra for a mobo with X-Fi, and at some point it just isn't worth it. This is the reason Nvidia gave up Soundstorm...wasn't cost effective. Why pay $200 for a mobo when you can get one for $120?
