So why, I always see people dissing this game but its just a normal multiplayer FPS.

I like the new models and every map they have out is awesome recreation of the older versions of them.

For all of the games that have come out in the past 18 months, for some reason the one I like to play is CS:S....I never liked the original....the only thing I don't like about it is the asshats running their mouths....but that is the beauty of mute.....

I've been playing CS since the very first beta version...ahh the memories. I have never liked the rampant cheating in the game, however. CS:S is fun sometimes, but I prefer to play online with friends on private servers. Thats just more fun to me. It's a fun fast shoot-em-up FPS but the targeting system and such leaves much to be desired. You'll never seen as many "head shots" in any other game and most of the time the fire fights feel so damn cheap, even if you come out on top. Then again, it's a fun game and I'm sure I'm reading way too much into it. :p

Personally I hate it because I grew up with Quake. Tactical shooters in general don't appeal to me. My gripes are just flat out bizarre net code (IMHO), the fact that some retard can get a lucky shot or a cheap kill and I have to sit out for 5 minutes while I watch everyone else play CounterCamp, and the fact that personally I have an axe to grind with Valve.

I just can't stand WATCHING a game be played with no control over it for any length of time, much less a minute or two until the end of the round, because some jerk off is camping in a corner after he outlived all his team mates by hiding. Even the second or two I have to wait to respawn in Quake 3 grates on my nerves sometimes. Plus, I'm biased as hell against Valve.

Although I will admit, with the right people, CS rocks. Playing by "Knife or Para" rules is great. Basically one person joins CT, and buys a Para, every else goes T and has to knife the CT. CT kills everyone, he stays CT. If someone kills the CT, then they switch. The victorious T goes CT and buys a para, and the losing CT goes T and sticks to his knife. Was great on the 747 level.

I think a lot of the hate was originally from people who had gotten used to playing 1.6, and then came over and tried playing on Source and were not as good (at first) as they were at playing 1.6.

I never played 1.6, so Source is all I know and of Counter Strike, it is my favorite online FPS game. However, my FAVORITE online game of all is Command and Conquer : Zero Hour which is also a hated game follow up for some reason.

Same reason I dislike it. Perhaps if they introduced a DoD style respawn system, I would like it. But of course if they did that, hardcore CS fans would meltdown in their rage.

I don't like it because its a game of shoot first and win or shoot with AWP and win. I also hate the wacky hit detection, I cannot count the number of times I have gotten head shots by aiming at the enemies feet.

Well would you rather die, and instantly be back in the game?
The value on life is almost nothing.

*then again, I was literally raised on CS1.3 =D.

OTOH, I do enjoy CS Deathmatch servers...those are an interesting twist. Definitely a big change from normal CS...especially since you can choose what guns/pistols you respawn with.

I am not crazy about CS but I have recently started playing Half-Life 2 Deathmatch and I love it.

If there is a CD deathmatch, as somebody mentioned above, I'm sure I would be more interested in CS. I will be checking it out when I get home. :)

people hate it because there used to be rampant cheating where people would get headshots through walls and have a k:d ratio of 74:2. kind of takes the fun out of the game.... especially when your just playing well and everyone else thinks your hacking.

i remember i used to get hated on back in 1.6 beta when i used to use the sniper-esqe deagle and the shield and basically kill everyone by myself. got banned from a server for that once.

CS, any version, gets a lot of crap because it can take weeks to become competent at the game (and months to master it, if you even have the basic talent needed to do so), not just a few hours like with Quake and UT.

CS:S gets all that crap, plus more because people who spent months becoming good at CS find that they aren't as good at CS:S because of the minor changes in it, and so they complain about the game and go back to CS instead of taking a week or two to get their skills back up to snuff in the new game.

That's pretty much it though, the game is hard, and takes time to master, so people without patience quit and then unload on the game every time someone else mentions it in forums.

I didn't find CS:S hard to master. When I played it I had pretty much the same efficiency as I have in any other fps game I play which to me is average. I consider myself an average player. That being said, I hate the spawn, die, wait scenerio as was mentioned. I play fps games because it doesn't matter if I die once or a hundred times, I can get back in the same round and go at it again in a really small amount of time whereas in CS:S if you die you have to wait for the next round.

I know some people would say that I just need to get better at the game. Well, if everyone was that good then nobody would die but that's just not being real. Things happen and you die, no matter how good you are. When these things happen to me and I die, I don't want to sit there for a few minutes waiting for the next round so that I can start to play again, possibly only to have things happen again and have to sit there again for a few minutes. Whereas in games like Battlefield2 you wait 15 seconds or so and you're right back in the game. For me that is way more fun because I don't have to be this fps god in order to play and have fun.

Spawn, die, wait, spawn, die, wait, spawn, die, wiat.....

I can see where that would piss off some people into not liking it. I didn't like it either at first. I started gaming online a lot with Soldier of Fortune II, and fell in love with the knife. I was dissapointed at how many times it takes to kill someone in counter-strike after slashing their throat area 5 or more times.

But, I played a great round based game called Rainbow Six 3, and that games changed my mind on the die and wait style games. Ever since that game, I can't stand playing DeathMatch style games. I want more strategy and a slightly slower pace. Although CSS can get heated at times, it is still no UT or Q3 Deathmatch game either.

CS is not hard by ANY measure. It's rediculously EASY, thats the problem. The hit detection is horrible, everyone runs around and it's purely random whether you win a firefight or not. It's also amazing how jumping and shooting or crouching and shooting basically determines the outcome of most 1 on 1 encounters.

It's pretty much a game for newbies in the FPS world and for people who don't know any better.

you guys wanna be good at cs?

1. camp spawn and use teammates as bait
2. camp back and awp, have it double zoomed at a specific location and wait for someone to run into the crosshair.
even my grandma can awp.
3. camp choke points, so wait behind a door and spray your ass off or camp at choke points with a rifle.

now u too can get a 24 and 2 score.

You can only say this so many times...

CS hit detection is fine, nigh perfect except for the shot after turning a corner scenario which only happens because you were informed that you died before even getting to the corner(so no bearing on game mechanics).

It's the accuracy model that sucks. If you hold the gun in full auto, the bullets go everywhere. If you fire the gun precisely as well as accurately(the two words mean different things), you'll see that the hit detection is very precise. It's the accuracy model that makes bullets go awry so that you can be holding down the fire button while people under your crosshairs aren't getting hit(and people outside your crosshairs may get hit too). The gunfire in CS differs too much from how you'd expect a real gun to fire. The only way to be good at this game is to never fire in full-auto. Too undependable.

And note: I don't play with rate settings at all, because it works perfectly for me already.

The weird accuracy model that upsets so many things is intrinsic to Counter-strike.

The hit detection is coming from the Source engine.

As for the main topic of the thread. People don't like Counter-strike because it's too popular. It gets infested with idiots that create an annoying environment. Similar derogatory remarks are made about WoW. A normal, well-adjusted player doesn't need to bawl "WTFX0rz h4x bey0tch non-stop." They just play. This means the annoying folk get much more attention than the calmer folk. I don't play this game anymore, played since beta 1 all those years ago. It stayed interesting because consecutive betas would constantly change the game. After it went retail I played much less. Lots of other games out there that I enjoy more, I'd had my fill of CS.

compared to other online fps games I've played CS:S is really frustrating. That's also kind of what makes it fun though. I personally think it would be a better game if headshots were removed. There is nothing more infuriating than executing a perfectly timed flank, taking 3-4 crouched, aimed shots at a moving guy who's looking the other way and doing 80 damage only to have him spin around spraying wildly for a 1-hit-kill headshot. In most games that scenario is a fluke. In CS:S it happens constantly.

To be honest I never said I "hated" or "loathed" CS or CS:S, but again just like any other game it isn't for everyone. I remember buying CS and returning it same day. I've been an avid fan of FPS, especially ones with MP, but I could never get into CS. I tried CS:S when it was first released and played it for a couple of days before I removed it. I think the problem in my case was that I was use to playing games like UT and TFC which of course we know are far from realistic and allow players to respawn immediately after death (in most cases).

And like another person said, I ran into a few cheaters during my experiences which doesn't help.

Eh, I guess I'll stick to UT2k4.

I love CSS. I never played anything Valve until playing CSS and HL2.

I love it, I love it lots.

I never got into the original CS ..at the time I was on dial up and I thought it was stupid that I could only get a pistol when others where getting rifles and such ... and then when I had the bomb , everybody and their grandma would type obscenities at me when I would be hiding behind a crate somewhere and they were all at the bomb site ..and then when I finally found the bombsite , I thought it was dumb that no matter how long I stood there with the bomb in my hands hitting the fire button ..it wouldnt do anything

 :p

..now I have since figured out how to actually play the game and think CS:S is quite fun.. I still suck tho

:)

for those of you who hate the fact that you spawn, die, wait, rinse, repeat.....they do have servers who play in DOD style mode, where u keep respawning in random places after u die and never have to wait.....all you gotta do is find um

rusty

I play on a CS:S server my friend owns. Some of the criticisms you guys mentioned (i.e. camping, having to wait after dying, etc) are true, but there's some things you can do to limit that.

My friend runs the Mani admin pack and therefore if someone is caught camping you have the opportunity to set them on fire, slay, slap, drug, blind, make them into the gimp, etc as a way to limit/eliminate camping. It usually works wonders to set the asshat on fire, then you don't see them camping much more after that. Also makes it funny to freeze some dumb ass into an ice cube and turn them into a beacon for everyone else to find and slaughter. :D It's also easier to yell at your retarded friend for being a bitch ass camper than it is on pubs.

The waiting doesnt really bother me that much because since I play on my friend's server against (mostly) a bunch of guys I know, when you do die, it's funny to follow one of your buddies around while they stalk another one of your friends, and then you get to taunt whoever got pwned. The games typically dont last that much longer after I die (never exceeding 2 minutes, usually more like 45-90 sec) so it's not too bad. Gives me the opportunity to take a sip of my drink and get ready for the next round.

I guess playing on public servers may be a little different but again, it doesnt really bother me even when I'm playing on the pubs. I'm not a huge fan of games like UT where all you do is run in circles firing and dying and respawning. It's just a little bit boring and repetitive to me... just my 2c...

I like CS and CS: S. There has been many times though when I would be doing very well and I would kill the Admin and he would kick and ban me because he thought I was cheating. The worst case I had was I killed someone and everyone was saying I was hacking and the Admin just decided to listen to them and not watch me in fp to see if I was cheating and he accessed the main file that saves all the mouse sensitivity and keys for moving, talking and shooting and completly fucked my whole system up. I had to re-download the game and make the file read only so he wouldn't do it again. Although I was already kicked and banned after he did that.

Its a great game though, I haven't seen as many cheaters lately but now I've been stuck on World of WarCrack and I just got my char to lvl 33 so I kinda just don't play it anymore.

I love it. its my first online FPS. Ive played Q3 and It doesnt really seem all that serious or fun.

People hate it because they are not good at it.

Have any of you ever run around with an AK and tried firing it? Or tried that when someone is firing back at you?

Let me tell you what, your accuracy is about the same as it is in the game; shitty.

Its very realistic. Once you get good you will realize what you have to do. Everytime I put my crosshairs on someones head I get a headshot.

I'll admit, there are some servers with some wacky hit detection but all it really takes is practice.

And be practice I mean about 2 months of 6 hour a day play periods almost every day.

Why don't you go play a CAL match then tell me if the game is for noobs or people that have skill. ;)

Because Half Life 2 Deathmatch is much more funner.

1) QFT (I left HL2:DM for CS:S because of the dieing scene)
2) Awping takes skill, If a noob camps a certain location with an awp hoping for cheap kills, I will take out a noob easily. Vets with an awp might be a different story.
3) Hitboxes are fine
4) You get headshots from aiming at the feet because your noob ass is spraying at the feet and there is something called recoil.
5) Skill is directly coorelated with luck, the more skill you have, the more "lucky shots" you will make.
6) T spawn camping awp whores should all be slaughtered, rush with bomb carrier then camp NOOBS!!
7) I love being admin, I will give money away randomly to people who rush, and slay #6 people.
8) When I die, It gives me the perfect amount of time to pack another bowl, hit another bowl, take another drink etc. 30-90 sec.
9) knowing that you could instantly die is what adds to the intensity of the game. Nothing like rushing into bombsight b and taking out 3 people and then rushing to defuse the bomb, wondering if you'll die in the process. Nothing like gettting a buncha gj's and LOL's from your fellow pubbers.
10) if all you do is spawn, die, spawn, die, etc. then you are a noob.

I love CS:S I wish my computer worked :-(

What always kind of turned me off to CS was the immaturity of those playing the game. The constant spamming of chat and smacktalk got old very quickly and I just ended up uninstalling the game.

I think that another issue is that when people comment about their dislike of CS, he or she is met with a thousands post about how the game is great and they must just suck at it. CS players have created a somewhat negative image of themselves for those outside the game.

I will admit CS has a completely different feel than any other FPS out there. Its a great game for those that are willing to put in the time and learn how to play and how maps are laid out. You have to find a good server that is well administered and has players you can get to know.

This is why I don't play the game. I am by no means a serious fps gamer and am probably below average, but had fun playing ut2003 for a while. However, with cs it's no fun to spawn, die within a few seconds and then wait until the round is over and then repeat this process.

I think people don't like because.... A. It's not their type of game. B. They have lower-end systems, and it runs like crap. C. It's different in a lot of little ways from 1.6, that many of us loved, i.e no-gui menus.... D. It plays different than 1.6, and people don't want to adapt.

thats why you try not to die? ....

Haha it's hard when you're playing against people who have played this for ten years. Then you always get comments like...what the hell noob? get out of here noob? wtf noob? i pwned you noob! :D

qft. thats all you do in that game. at least in bf2...can walk around in a large map and not die as fast if you play your cards right. ive never seen the draw in cs. but to each his own.
