Which X2 Processor?

Good Morning, All,

I'm looking at (finally) moving to an AMD X2 system. My P4 2.4@3.2 is getting a little long in the tooth, and I'd love to have a more "responsive" system, in regards to multitasking, etc. I have everything but the chip... not entirely sure which to go for at the moment.
I understand that the X2 3800+, with its Manchester dualcore, is 2.0 GHz with 2x 512 L2 cache. Not bad at around $322 at the Egg.
The X2 4400+, with its Toledo dualcore, is 2.2 GHz but, perhaps more importantly, has 2x 1MB L2 cache.

Which is going to be a better processor? Do the extra L2 caches make any difference? Or should I just go with the X2 3800+ ?
I don't plan on making any insane overclocks... not intially, anyway :)

Thanks in advance!

i was gonna get an X2 3800+ recently, but i changed my mind and got an Opteron 165 with 1mb cache per core....so i cant tell you if the extra cache is worth it

the difference in performance is definitely noticeable from my Athlon 64 3000+..

Since you're also considering the X2 3800+, i would recommend an Opteron 165, simply becausse you get the best of both worlds (1mb cache/core and cheaper than the 4200+ or 4400+)

I've had both the X2 3800+ and the Opty 165. You wouldn't notice the difference between them. Both OC pretty well.

Supposedly there are going to be price drops soon (and raised prices on the Opty's). Might want to wait for that?

I would say go with the Opty 165 or 170. The divider on the 170 so it's alot easier to fig. out when overclocking.

Opty's historically overclock better, due to better silicon, and a more strict build process (designed for servers, where reliability is primary concern).

I would say go for the opty over the x2 purely for the overclocking potiential. However, bear what a fellew [H] wrote in a forum. You pay for the processor to work at stock speeds. Anything beyond that is a gift.

I also was looking at both of those X2's i decided to get the opteron 170. It was cheaper, and holds a much better chance of OC'ing

Just FYI, I got my 3800+ to 2.4 on stock cooling without any trouble at all.

Good points from everyone.

I'll check into the Opteron 165 and 170.

Wonder when the price cuts/increases will happen.

Thanks everyone!

The optys are doing way better than 2.4, most are getting 2.6+ on stock cooling, and when given better cooling can hit 2.8-3.0 if u get a good one. :)

yea get the 170 first choice or the 3800+ X2
i got my 3800+ at 2.5 on stock cooling and vcore

1.35v is stock ;) but they are rated at 1.35v-1.4v

I'm running 2.41 @ 1.35v on my X2 3800+

Yea but overall the optys are getting better overclocks than the A64s for the most part, i'd definatlly go opty

However come monday the price increase of the opterons may make them not as much worth it.

True but if your going to overclock then it really might be worth the extra bit to get the opty cuz most are getting more preformance out of it, how much is the price increase anyways?

The X2 3800+ and Opty 165 are going to swap prices on the low end...I know that much.
