Which Headphones?

Will the zero dac (as far as positional abilities) work with any headphones? I'm looking for something that is good for multi-use (gaming/positional effect, music, 5.1 for movies). Does anyone have any suggestions? Been looking at Sennheiser 595 (I think) and PC 350, and Pioneer wireless 5.1 headphones.

Thanks in advance.

No. You want a receiver for 5.1. The zero dac is stereo only.

Your headphone choices are way off. The 350s are gimped 595s. The 595s are ok but you can do better for the same $$ and the Pioneer 5.1s are not very good either. Hell, the Koss SB40s have a larger sound stage than any of those lol. Something like a AKG 601 would give you the most "surround sound" in a dynamic headphone. Stax are the best.

Are you headphone only or do you have speakers?

I've got the Senn's HD515, they're really comfortable, only downside is the bass is very lacking. I had bought them because my Senn HD 485 would hurt my ears after long use. The 485's though have much better over all clarity and bass compared to the HD515.

I'm looking for a set that are comfortable for long uses, and are good for movies, trance/electronica, and gaming. (not interested in the 5.1 thing I think it's a load of BS anyways).

I was looking at the Audio Technica's ATH A900s but I'm unsure if the overall quality is comparable to the 485 and are able to be worn for long periods of time.

Edit: Anyone have any prior experience with the Senn's HD280PRO? That's another set of Sennheisers I was looking at.

Any other suggestions are more than welcome, I'm willing to drop up to $300 for a new set of cans.

Thanks.

The Audio Technicas are probably the most comfortable headphones made. The A900 is a great choice if you want to run it out of a sound card. Unless you want to buy used, there is not another headphone I would get if you want some bass, comfort and good midrange detail.

The Senn 280s are known for their strong clamping force. This is a good thing if you want an really good seal and isolation but not good for comfort. The A900 are like wearing ultralight earmuffs or close to nothing at all.

i have and have had the a900, 280pro, and the 485. the 485 loses big compared to the other 2. the a900 sounds much better than the 280 also.
the 280 clamps like spaceman said, also have a headband breaking issue. the a900's are my fave headphone right now

I should be getting my DT48a this week. They are tonally accuarate, with ultra clarity, & detail greater then the Sony SA5000.

On ears? Let me know about the sound stage please bubba. What did you pay for them?

Sure. hese are closed headphones. 16db. Sound stage isn't great, but very accurate & precise.. Flat FR across the board.. & I hear they are also used for hearing test.. The midrange makes the 501's sound slow & congested.. They are 5 ohms & very sensitive, so I'm worried about hissing through my receiver. There are 3 versions 48a is the rarest.. They sell for 400. Bought 275 used. Theres still the 48e.. one is 25 ohms the other is 200 ohms.. Both can be bought online for around 333 new.

wow

5 ohms. midrange might be worth it though. kind of like a fostex single driver speaker.

Yeah, I hear they are killer for acustics. They should be. They used for aural-acoustical investigations. They are audiometric metric headphones. They are used for hearing test. Each headphone is man made. Can take up to 6 month. Each driver is mtacted very carefully. about a 1db diffence. Comes with a fr chart, since some slightly very. It can also survive a war. The drivers are encased in a metal housing. The headphone is practically all metal with rubber ear pads. One was run over by a car, and there was only cosmetic damage. These are for ultra fidelity. They aren't made to sound plesant. And the bass is on par with the 501s, or slightly less. But IM a detail freak. These might be the most detailed dynamic cans ever. I asked for a K1000 comparison. But heard they are much more revealing then the 880's. Hopefully they will be on the 202 level detail wise, cause they also put the 880's in submission.

Just got my ATH A900's today from Japan.

Much better sound than my Sennheiser 485 HD. These things are comfortable as hell. Great clarity and since they cover your entire ear, it creates a nice seal to keep in all the sound and you get some great bass. Excellent choice of headphones.

Listened to some Trance, rock, metal, soundtracks, and it felt like I was listening to the music for the first time all over again. GREAT clarity and very very comfortable headphones. :D

Yup. Sure are. Always satisfying to hear people experience something great.

Cheers!

Hey guys back again! I'm sure some of you have read about my dilemma of 2.1 or headphones; well I've decided that headphones are the way to go since I game mostly at night and listen to music at night too. I'm looking for some phones with good bass and that are good with games like COD4 on the PS3. That'll be my main use, PS3, Blu Ray, and music. I know I'll be needing a sort of adapter to connect the RCA input from PS3's composite cable because my tv has no headphone jacks. Please could someone recommend something from Guitar Center preferably. I'm sure some of you have read about me not being able to order things online so...Thanks for hearing me out,

I can tell you this much, avoid the HD280's if you want bass. The guy at Guitar Center the the DT770's have good bass but damn, $200 for a pair of cans.

Yeah probably won't be spending more than $150 or so. Since no one has replied, I'm going to go check them out personally. Something that I do need answered is the adapter I'd need for connecting PS3 composite RCA thing? My tv has no headphone jack.

I know of no such adapter but I think it would be easier to just get an amp, even a cheap one will do. You can then plug the headphones to the amp and it would even give you an easy access to volume control.

It would be best if the amp has RCA input so you can just plug the RCA cable from the PS3 straight to the amp. If the amp only has a 1/8 inch input, then get a RCA to 1/8" adapter.

Thanks, I'll look into it. I was thinking of doing that, but I figured there was an adapter of some sort? I'm guessing instead of amp, a subwoofer would be better.

HUH? Dude what? How is a sub going to work? All you would hear is the bass!

You have two rca audio jacks right? One red and one white? You need to score a headphone amp or a receiver.

You are confusing the hell out of me lol.

lol xp Wow I'm confused as hell too...As you can tell I know NOTHING about headphones and how they work. Alright headphone amp or receiver got it. I'll check into those things. Any suggestions from a local retailer?

Can someone recommend me some headphones and an headphone amp(if needed)? budget for both are 240..thanks

lol np man, we all have to start somewhere.

A receiver is probably the best thing for you. Buying online is an issue and headphone amps are online only for the most part.

You do not need a surround receiver so a cheap Insignia stereo receiver from best buy will do fine. If you can afford more, Pioneer and Yamaha make the best cheap receivers you can buy at a retail store. Onkyo and Sony both have issues with their entry level receivers so avoid them unless you get a really good deal.

Look for open box deals. They are usually in a specific spot in the store.

At BoogerBomb, yeah I think that was the RCA thing that was recommended. This would solve a lot of my problems. Looking for one in Radioshack, hopefully they have one! It would save me a bit of money from buying a receiver.

I don't see how that adapter is going to work. What you need is an adapter with 2 female RCA in and 1 female 1/8" out (or 1/4", depending on your headphones). Also, even if you can find such an adapter, you will also need a volume controller somewhere in the chain.

It won't work. Get a receiver and build a system with it over time. That is all.

You're right, already tried out the RCA whatever thing and it didn't work and as mentioned I'd need a volume button. Thanks for the help!

So I'm about to go for the SB40's just because I need new headphones for gaming. However, my sound card is the old Audigy 2 ZS. If I was a serious gamer, should I be getting an X-Fi while I'm at it? The game I play is Team Fortress 2, which is a source engine game, and I've heard things like no or bad EAX support. This is basically what holds me back shelling the cash out. I use Windows XP BTW.

I upgraded from an audigy 2 ZS to an X-fi extreme gamer and in source engine games the change was negligible. However for BF2 and Crysis I did notice improvements in environmental affects.

Hope this helps.

TF2 has its own audio engine- it does not use eax at all. for that game what u want is a card that does 5.1 audio conversion to headphones. an audigy, x-fi, or any dolby headphone capable card will do this. in other words your audigy is fine

Thanks guys. I guess I'll post back about the SB40 once I get it. My previous headset? A gamer headset lol

Is there something I'm supposed to do (via settings and whatnot) to get the 5.1 audio conversion to headphones? All I'm playing on here is Stereo...

in your audigy control panel- set output to 'headphones'. make sure cmss3d is on. in tf2 set audio output to 5.1. the audigy takes the 5.1 output and converts it into headphone surround sound.

I fixed my problem! I found an old Sony Stereo System and it had the red and white audio inputs so I said heck I'll give it a try with the PS3's composite cable; it has a headphone jack so it solved my problem of gaming at night easily! I hooked it up and lo and behold it worked. I'm not an audiophile by any means but they sound alright for being from like early 2000's. Just thought I'd share a good day.

age means nothing. Some of the best stereo systems and headphones are from the 70s and 80s. And the DT48 that I brag about was made in 01 and can hang/beat many of the best heads ever, in certain areas.

Sounds good to me! :D Thanks for the previous help.

Which headphones.... Sennheiser HD 555, the Audio Technica ATH-AD700, or the Bose TriPort? Main use will be PS3, and music from some rock to a lot of rap.
