Which Headphones?

I just got my DT-770/250ohm cans yesterday... still burning them in, but with the proper power (only been able to power then with my Sony receiver until my amp comes in - but they beat my HD-280s without a doubt.

Still adjusting to them while they burn in, so I'm hesitant to say much more - but for the $102 I paid... I don't possibly see how these could be beat. Period.

So what's the lowdown with these cmoy headphone amps I've been reading so much about here and that I've seen being sold on eBay?

It sounds like people who use headphones with mp3 players and laptops benefit substantially. What about desktop PCs with X-FIs?

throw in the koss portapro. just got some- these are the best koss i have ever heard. supposedly the sportapro used the same drivers

Should I go ahead and make the jump to X-Fi from Audigy 2 ZS? What are main improvements? I'm currently using the Koss SB40, and will probably make the switch over to one of the new JVC's.

Yep. KSC35/Sportapro/Portapro use the same driver. KSC75/UR40 use similar drivers that have a coating on them.

The JVC HAR-X900 is a better headphone than the 770. The 770 is all bass and not even very good bass. Just WOOMP WOOMP.
Just my luck that I get ready to order and both the RX900 and the DT770s went way up in price (~$100 and ~$200 respectively).

I need the new cans pretty soon too, so I just bit the bullet and got a set of AD700s instead. I really hope I don't end up with the same problem I've been living with for the past year as far as the SB-40s -- the insides of the cups aren't deep enough for my ears and they press against them. Guess I'll find out soon.

Well, I think you will be ok. The cups are pretty fat. Like a doughnut almost. If you still have issues, I think you can mod the SB40s with some plastic tubing. Ask ourfpshero? Can't remember.

I have largish ears and had no trouble fitting into AD700's-
personally I ended up with ATH-A900's but only because I want/need a closed headphone and the reviews were top notch- I've very happy with my purchase.

I don't have much headphones experience but the most comfortable set of headphones I've ever worn were some Sennheiser HD 477's that are no longer in production. I broke / lost mine, but I am looking to replace them finally with something similar. I prefer open ear and fabric pads (all open ear headphones have this type of padding? or do some come with the leathery type?).

I see a lot of people buying these cheapy JVC RX700's, would that be a good choice for me? The HD 477's were really really lightweight and soft, I was hoping to get something similar. The RX700 doesn't look so similar.

Comfort = Senn's.

I use 595's. Velour pads, open backed and sound great, cheaper variant would be the 555's. Just my opinion, not too much headphone experience.

the rx700s are about 5 times as large as the hd477. you want the sennheiser eh350. they are the same size/design. supposed succesor to the hd497

Interesting...EH150 and EH350 look nice. Do they make an open air version of the EH150? If I get the EH350's I'm spending a bit more than I'd like to.

edit: shoot, looking at the HD 555, reviews say it puts the sound of the 497 to shame and it has velour....anyone want to sell me a pair for 60 bucks :( hehe

The JVC HAR-X700 or 900 is the best thing going atm. Do not bother with any Sennheiser 555 or below. The 595s might be a good choice for you but otherwise go with the JVC X900 if you want to keep it cheap. They are very good for the $$ and much better than the 555s.

In your opinion, is the rx900 worth the extra ~$25 over the rx700?

the hd555 is a large full size can. if u want portable size, get the eh350, koss portapro/sportapro, maybe the jvc hs700 (mine is on the way :) )
if u want large cans the jvc harx700/900 are a great deal

What wireless headphones for general use should I get? I use a 24" monitor and I want to be able to sit in my sofa to watch movies and stuff. Not looking to spend a whole lot on them, preferably below $100. I'm not an audiophile :p

Got AKG K414P right now that I really like but i need something wireless now.

How far is your sofa? You might be able to get an extension cord for cheap at monoprice.com

I can't vouch for the sound quality of this set but here is one set under $100.

Good news. The AD700s fit great -- no pressure on my ears at all. They're also surprisingly light (think I saw some mention of aluminum on the box) and they don't press on the top of my head. The highs are noticeably better, and I can pick out things that weren't there with the SB45s.

Not something I would ever use at work though - they're huge, maroon-colored, and look a little goofy with the plastic arches rising out the top :p. Not to mention the sound leakage. Going to keep these at home connected to my X-Fi.

mentioning the koss ur29. same drivers as sb40- has no mic, better bass probably due to clampier fit and better earpads. can be found less than 20$ online

Anybody try out the Ultrasone HFI-15g? Ultrasone just released an updated model with a much shorter cable (1meter as opposed to 4meters). Is this a good way to try out the S-Logic without plunking down the more serious cash for the HFI-780?

How would you compare them to your x700's?

very different beasts. the hs-15 is very small. it does have a large sound for its size though. the rx700 i consider better all around sound-wise. it has a bigger sound, stage, better highs, deeper lows.
however- for a portable sized headset- the hs-15 does give the ultrasone sound in a compact package. fat mids and mid-bass, slightly recessed highs. kind of pricy tho. sometimes ultrasone sells b-stocks for 50$ from their site.

Thanks for the info. I just needed a starting point because I'm unfamiliar with the sounds of portable cans and the s-logic intrigues me. I also wanted something open and non pleather because my ears tend to heat up pretty quickly.

These are a more refined version of the 03's model.. Better in every way, but the bass quantity has been toned a bit.. If you are looking for deep bass, I'd look at a DT990 pro.. 05 models are over 200. Only the Darth byers..D5000, & JVC1000 really better them in deep bass.. For under a grand..

i have an Audio technica AD700..i use them with my computer with x-fi extreme gamer soundcard ...for music and gaming purpose..and i really love them...love the sound quality and details .

Now that i have bought a Cowon D2 MP3 player...im looking for a decent headphone..within 50 $$...and i came to see this JVC harx700 thread ... how are these JVC Harx700...would they be an alternative to the AD700s?..i mean do they sound nearly as good as the Audio technica AD700s or Grado SR60? . MAIN preference is music on MP3 Player....And how are they for gaming?? ..wont be using at all for gaming..but just to know:)

Sorry for so much queries abt the headphone..the thing is ...im a bit low on $$ atm...so just to make sure im making a right purchase...h3h3h

Thanks a lot in advance guys:p

In the past I would have recommended my Razer Barracuda's.. AMAZING sound and great comfort. Unfortunately, I've had 2 pairs and BOTH are crap from a quality perspective. I have 2 friends that bought them on my recommendation, BOTH are having the same problems. First, the screw FALL OUT. And they are tiny screws so good luck finding them. These are the screws that hold the earcups to the frame. Great quality for $100 (JOKING) Warranty is only a year and you have to have a signed letter from the Prime Minister to get it covered under warranty. Then if you send in an email to them, they ignore it. Buy something for half the price and twice the quality.

They are a bit big for portable lol. About the size of the AD700s. However, for the price, in your budget range, they are the ticket.

Are there any nice headphones with a mic? I don't want gaming headphones, just nice all around headphones with a mic

Not really. There is, but they are not worth it.

Get a zalman clip on mic and the headphones of your choice.

I say forget headphones with mics. I think you will always comprimise sound quality. Same with USB. If you want sound quality, stick with phono/miniplug.

As for brands...let me preface by saying I hate Sony. I will not go into all the ways and reasons, but trust me, I HATE THEM. That said, I believe they may have made the greatest headphones ever. Perhaps not the best sounding, or cheapest, or most comfortable, and they are not perfect. But bang-for-buck (and they do sound QUITE extrodinary) the Sony MDV-r6 cannot be beat.
I bought my first pair (and only for myself) before my son was born for around $150. I was attending school for radio and TV broadcasting, and wanted something a little more reliable then the $2.50 POS's that the school provided. A fellow student had bought the Sony and after borrowing them for an evening, I knew I had to have a pair. They got alot of use at school, and around the house. I even used them at work sometimes, and I am a carpenter. Everything I bring to work takes alot of abuse.
As I said, I bought these before my son was born. When he turned 15, he was ready for a pair of good headphones. Since mine were still going stromg, I didn't hesitate to get him a pair. By now the price had dropped to around $70 via Amazon. Three years later, mine, and my sons are still going strong. That's 18+ (probably closer to 20, as I had them a couple years before he was born) without a problem ever. Not even the cord shorting out.
As I said, they are not perfect. It is common for the earpad's leather-like material to flake and wear eventually, though replacement new pads are about $15 online, and easy to replace. They may not be the most comfortable, and they do get a little warm at times, but at $150, for 20 years, that comes out to about $7.50 a year. DOn't take my word for it. You can find many testimonials on these cans. Many will compare them to $500 Senheisers. Make sure it's the MDV-r6 though. They have a similar model #, that's totally different.
These...

sorry but have you tried any nicer headphones than those? Seems like a lot to say with no backing up

The Sony is a good headphone. Just a pretty old design now and there are more great $200 and under headphones now than then. I do not consider them to be in my top 5 in their price category but more like 7 on the list. Good, solid but not the best.

After using my RX700's for 2 weeks I have to say I wish they were open. They are a bit tight even after repeated stretching and they get very hot on my head. The sound is very good though.

Easy answer,

For Music only Grado SR-60

All around, Music, Games etc... Sennheiser 580's or Above

I have both and they are great, just make sure than the Senn's that you buy are made in Ireland, some of the cheaper phones are made in china.
