Which Headphones?

ive had them all- i prefer the ath-ad700, then hd555. the ad700 has better highs and lows then the hd555. the only downside is that the ad700 is very large and prone to dents on the fragile earcups. if too much $$ get the ath-ad500- it sounds pretty much identical to the ad700

Bose? never. overpriced.

Senn 555? meh. if you can get them cheap sure.

The AD700 is way better than either but not a real boom boom headphone. You might not like the bass. Still, you can't get much better sound in that price range. Biggest plus is that they work well out of anything. No amp needed.

My advice? Order a pair of Koss SB40 and see what you think. They are cheap, full sized, tough, and have good hitting bass.

Hi all. looking for a new set for gaming mainly and movies. i read a bit and found the ath-a900 are hq. i am looking for 5.1 cans and wireless would be a big plus (my tv is 10' away can i use the a900?). I have heard a bit about a few others and narrowed it to the turtle beach ear force x4, sony 2.4? mdr-ds6000, the ath-aD900s (whats the diff on the D's) and the steelsound 5Hv2.

i also know the beyerdynamic mmx 300 are... best gaming headset. period! tho they sound out of range ~$.

lol to 5.1 and wireless headsets. unless they are ONLY for gaming and directional sound. otherwise, they sound like dusty farts.

Man. 10'? Tough. Unless you have a receiver? If not, the best wireless headphones for "cheap" are these:

Otherwise, I won't recommend anything else. I just haven't tried any other wireless.
 
Just got the ATH-AD700s and they are pretty badass. They're extremely comfortable and don't get hot which is a big bonus for long gaming sessions. I can hear every detail to the point where it's kind of annoying when playing MMOs because you don't really need to hear everything. I'm sure I'll be thankful for the level of detail when Left 4 Dead comes out though :D. Great cans all around and at only $100 I don't suffer from buyer's remorse.
 
The 700s are detailed for 100.00. But the 280s are even more detailed, but would take a hit to the SQ. To get reference type detail, you would need to get the 880's, which are on sale at Amazon. 188.00. Good price considering they retail for 479.00. beyerdynamic.com. But seems like you don't like too much detail.

I think I tried the 880s a couple years ago but I think I returned them cause it needed an amp. The AD700s are powered nicely from my soundcard. If the 880s didn't sound a little weak w/o the amp, I'd be all over it at $188.00.

Sorry but I really have little experience with that kind of setup. The main issue is $$. If you have about $300 I think that you could do a wireless transponder to a receiver or cmoy amp and a pair of wired headphones next to you.

The only issue with the ear force is that it dims game sound whenever people talk on the chat.

Took the plunge and got the Beyer DT770 Pro80's. Ran $200 but DAMN they sound great. The material they use for the paddings is really comfortable too, and they aren't the vice grips the Senn 280's are.

Sad thing is now I need an amp to get the most out of them when using them with my Sansa Fuze.
 
A little bit off topic but can anyone recommend a couple songs I could use to break in new headphones? I've heard some headphones need breaking-in and the best way is to just fire up a playlist and leave it on for 40-60 hours. I figured I could just do this while I'm at work for a week.

You'll probably get a ton of different opinions on that... just play your favorite songs and it should be alright... if you want to go all-out get some pink/white noise and play that at regular listening levels.
 
Or techno, which goes way high and low.

DT770s cost $200? Ouch. Used to be $145 was high. Comfy velor pads ftw though.

Well yeah. You should hear way more detail than before. They are really clean headphones.
 
I will probally get the Sony F1's.. People keep saying that they are the most comfortable headphone out.. One guy says it's the biggest soundstage he heard, & he also has the 701's.. So It got me intrigued.
 
For that money I would go Stax. Unless they are less than the $300 I saw on Amazon. I would assume though, that you would get them used for about $150?

As always, report in on them huh? I doubt they have a bigger stage than the Lambda Normal bias but the 701 sure.

The AKG 701/601 has that unique 3D bubble sound stage that kind of circles the ear. They are deadly accurate at positioning.
 
I'm looking at getting a better set of headphones. I've narrowed down between the DT 770 and the ATH AD700.

I don't have a headphone amp yet but am looking into those as well.

The 770s really need an amp and still are not very good imo.

The AD700s will provide the most comfortable fit of all headphones in this range but do not have much bass impact. You might want to wait and let me test out the JVC 700s first though. They are closed and will not breath like the AD700s but might well have 90% of the sound of the A900s for $30.

Getting mine new. 230.00 ship. I keep hearing about their realistic and speaker like sound stage.
 
And troymadison said the F1s and the 303s have a very similar sound stage.. Which stax model would easy best the F1's??

now, i'm intrigued with these.

comfort and big, detailed soundstage are my two most important criteria... but price is important because i'm pretty rough with headphones.. dropping them on the floor often (< 3' onto carpet, but still... i probably drop them 3 or 4 times a day). I should probably invest in a $2 hook for the desk lol :p
 
any obvious candidates for my music preferences? fwiw, this is what I came up with: ATH-A700 / AD700 / A900, JVC HA RX700 / RX900. just ordered the rx700s, but still curious

closed-back vs open-air?
is it mostly about comfort? used for 3-4 hours of daily gaming & listening to music

The rx700 are very good. They lack that final bit of something in the mods and highs compared to the 900. The sound stage is about the same. I think that the AD700 has a larger sound stage but the RX700 has more bass.

I did order the RX900 too and will a/b them.

The RX 700 is the best budget headphone ever. Unreal to get something this good for $35!
 
Best Headphones for around 50 dollars or lower? the JVC RX700's sound good, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

I use the Koss Portapro headphones. I like them, because they easily fold up into a little circle so I can take them where ever in my pocket. They also have fantastic sound.
 
So, I got those Koss SB-45s about a year ago, and they're great for gaming/Ventrilo/Skype etc. I've had good feedback as far as how my mic sounds. But they seem noticeably weak on bass -- a little lacking in...omph?...for listening to music. Weaker than my old pair of budget headphones actually, in the bass department.

And now I'm seeing the Beyer DT-770s over in Hot Deals for about $100. Thoughts on whether those are something I should seriously consider? Something else that would provide what I'm looking for? Either way, I prefer big cups that are comfortable and have good noise isolation, in addition to the bass requirement.
 
The JVC HAR-X900 is a better headphone than the 770. The 770 is all bass and not even very good bass. Just WOOMP WOOMP.

These are the 05 model which retail for 300. Better then the 770 03 pros. Id get them over the 700/900 JVC.

And to Spaceman, my F1s soundstage does better the 701s.. Spatial abilities are very impressive.. Their Left to right extention, width and depth is unbelievable for a headphone.. Overall sound is good but not great.
 
After seeing my 3rd logitech headset break in less than two years (1 got ripped at a LAN, the other faced a chair accident, the recent one the mic just flat out died), I figured it was time to jump to something a bit better. The timing for my headset forced me to a backup set and I hate it, but I want to wait until I found something nice. I plan to use this for gaming, vent/skype chat, and music.

After taking a look at headphone.com and newegg, it seems a Sennheiser HD201 or HD202 might fit the job, for the low cost but apparently good quality for the cost. Would either one fit my needs, as my first adventure into this, or wait a bit to acquire something better? I would like to acquire this within two weeks, but I can wait until Black Friday if headsets go do on crazy sales.

Edit: Oops, budget is 40-50 USD plus CA state tax now, or 100 USD + CA state tax on Black Friday
