Which Headphones?

Naw. Bit of superglue does wonders lol. Plenty of ways to get the mike close. It does just fine clipped onto the speaker wire bit.

$150 is Audio technica A700 or A900 if you can get really lucky used.
 
I need something thats stereo but I'll try my hand with an Audio Technica. Seems like the best route.
 
Just took the dive and purchased the AD700s and the Zalman Clip Mic. I'm no audiophile but I'll let you guys know how I like them.

Spaceman recommended me the SB40's to me already but I am looking at getting a sweet deal on the A/AD700 or the DT770 on ebay. I am currently looking at this one. A guy at my work can do all the work for me to fix them.

Hadn't seen these mentioned in the thread so i thought I’d share what i learned about these. I had these for about 2 years there very comfortable and sound ok, but lacking in base but recently i started getting a short in the right ear and decided to buy some new phones. after scouring this thread and absorbing a lot of useful info i decided to purchase a cheap pair of phones to use with my Zalaman Mic till I Got enough money to buy the Sennheisers HD555's. but in the mean time i decided to mod the Logitech’s by removing the inline audio control. Now prior to removing the inline the sound was ok but limited the bass was never satisfying, (according to the threads description My listening prefrence is a “basshead”) It also just did not get loud enough even when turning up the system sound and the inline. After removing the inline the audio is now great I’m listening to different music From Metalica to Method Man, even the classical Demo that comes with media player. as I write this post . If the previous sound quality was at a 5, its now about a 7.5 to 8 the bass is still no quit where I’d like it but it is defiantly present now. The mid’s & Highs sound good but they always did. The sound doesn’t distort till around 48 using Vista’s media center volume. Overall I’m very satisfied with the results and these will be my lan party sets from now on.

The short story is that inline volume control sucks big time and should always be avoided.

Good job getting it to work though. Does not always happen that way lol.

Question: You mentioned that the front panel mic port for the X-Fi sucked. What would be the difference between the front and the rear? The fact it has to connect to the sound card via a cable?
 
Not the mic port, the headphone jack. I believe that the early front panels had a power wire but then it became just a connector to the sound card. Result was no power and decidedly bad sound. Creative cut corners as they progressed. Big surprise.
 
Whooo guess I'm getting into DIY, I bought a kit for a Millett Starving Student tube amp... wonder how it will go with (for now) a laptop out and KSC-75's, heh...
 
The Millet will give you a different sound. Tube rolling allows you to change the sound signature.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how tube's sound. Only problem is apparently there are few tubes that will work in this one, because of the design... but that's no problem. After this I need a DAC and maybe a SS amp... I'm thinking Mini³
 
mini is another great amp. with the right op-amps, it is a slamming amp. Lite Dac Ah with passive mods is a great, cheap dac. Audiogon sometimes has some older, awesome dacs. I got a PS Audio Dac II for $100 there and it was FUN for games.
 
Hey guys its me again after much research and reading forum after forum I have narrow it down to these options please help. Remember my main objective is for the Xbox 360 for positional audio don't care how good it sounds as long as I can tell where the enemy is :) for all I care it can sound like crap as long as I know where they are at not that my SB40 can sound like crap mind you ;)

After so much research I really learning toward an easy setup with mixamp and say forget about everything. Done to much research like hours worth and tired of reading lol. I can take it anywhere I want and is good for lan's and local tourney's! But if the receivers are worth it I will go with it especially seeing how Sherwood is cheaper than the mixamp.

I use a Zero Dac/Amp with optical out for my Xbox 360 it is very superb for positional audio. I have the Koss Sb40 and the ATH-AD00 for headphones and both work great but he A900 has superior positioning sound over the SB40.

Oh and The output I use is Digital Stereo not 5.1 but the positional is better than the 5.1 that I had on my Tritton AX360 headset.

Got my 700's today. Very impressed with them so far. The clarity is definitely there and I actually like the level of bass these produce. Not overpowering at all. My one gripe is their loud from the outside.

Sorry for my ignorance I really don't know much about audio. Doesn't it amp only make the headphone sound louder or clearer and more crisp? Does this process the 5.1 and then down mixes to 2.0? Or in your opinion it just sounds better selecting digital stereo from the Xbox to the Zero for positional sound than something like the the JVC adapter or the Mix Amp which down mixes 5.1 to 2.0 and has Dolby headphone??

The 360 downmixes the 5.1 to digital stereo. The zero dac will give you superior positional sound via stereo headphones.

So, get the Zero, or the Sherwood, or the 363 ( all sound great, the zero probably the best for headphones) plug the 360/PC, plug some headphones into it, done. That easy. Sound will amaze you I promise.

I have tried the Tritton AX360 headset using the optical cable and 5.1 sound sound setting and I had a hard time telling me where the bad guys were in COD4 on the Xbox. I used my Turtle Beach HPA2 through the DAC/AMP that came with the trittons and same thing I was disappointed in the positional audio.

I then bought a set of Koss SB40 and used the DAC/AMP that came with the Logitech Z-5500 that I have and was still disappointed in the positional audio. I used Optical out from the Xbox to the Z-5500 control module using a digital stereo signal.

For an experiment I moved my Xbox to my living room and plugged it into my Pioneer receiver and played a few games using that DAC/Headphone AMP through the Koss SB40 on digital stereo output and was dually impressed with the sound quality and positional audio.

Adding a receiver to my desk was not an option so I read some reviews around here and Head-Fi and bought a Zero DAC/AMP for my desk. It has a small form factor and accepts both optical and Coax digital inputs which is great i can hook up my PC and Xbox at the same time with no cable swap.

I plugged in my SB40's and the positional audio was great but there were sweating me out a little on the ears and the MIC is pretty bad forcing me to use the Zalman mic that I have. I then found a pair of Audio Technica ATH-A900's used for sale and I scarfed them up I could not be happier with my gaming setup right now. It is also 100X better for music that what I am used to so that was an added bonus.

The only difference is open AD or closed A700. This means that the AD lets noise in if there is something loud in you room, but also has more air to them in terms of sound stage and actual air so your ears don't sweat as much. I like the AD700 better but the A700 has better footsteps but is hotter. Hope that somewhat helps. I am tired.
 
Woah...I'm lost. So some headphones require an amp? I'm interested in getting some quality headphones for use with PS3. I don't do any PC gaming at all. What would I need? Do the headphones just connect to the headphone jack on the side of my monitor?

I just bought an Onkyo S3100 5.1, but honestly it's too much for my room. I'd keep it if I could set up the speaker placement better, but I can't because of limited space. I'm going to return those and just keep looking for whats best. I hear headphones are a good alternate method to "surround sound" depending on the headphones of course, but I was also thinking of a 2.1 system or even the Sony HTCT100 3.1 system. I screwed up big time in forcing myself to get a 5.1 system.

Well headphones are GREAT for such a setup. Ok. So take the surround back. Which store? I would get a decent receiver Sherwood 6500 is the cheapest good one and the AD 700 unless you room is a freezer. The A700 are closed and you will sweat the hell out for the sake of maybe hearing footsteps a bit more. The Koss Sb40 do a good job being closed and not sweating as bad though.
 
If you have a budget in mind, I can offer some strictly headphone oriented dacs and amps. If it is on the cheap, a receiver and a koss sb40 will rule no doubt.
 
I'm not sure yet as to whether I should get headphones, but my budget would be around $400. Gonna return back to CC and I can't order anything online so basicallt anything from CompUSA, BB, or CC is gonna have to cut it. Hope fully tomorow I'll go check out the Sony I mentioned at BB and could walk over to CC; anything you or anyone else could tell me what to look for there (headphones, receiver). Are they like 5.1 headphones?
