Which Headphones?

Yup. No problem. Headsets have always been the weak link for headphones. It is getting better b/c just 2 years ago it was TERRIBLE. Now there are 2-3 pretty good ones.

Another interesting deal is the Koss SB40 w/ Beyer Velour? sp pads and the mic replaced with a real one if you are into DIY.

I actually soldered in a different mic into my sb40 and put on velour earpads from other headphones
 
What pads are compatable with the SB 40's I hate the Pleather that they came with? I would much rather have velour set for comfort and breathability.

i actually went back to the stock pads as the velour ones i tried made my ears hot-they need to be a little larger- like a beyerdynamics or equations. (i like large earcups). some good sealing would much improve the bass on these as pressing the cups in to my head brings out head pounding bass

the mic housing unscrews so its ez to replace if u can solder a little
 
i'm in a market for some earphones, and i totally have no clue what to get. i just want to listen to my mp3's from my phone. nothing more... nothing less. i was thinking of picking up these, but would still like a general opinion on what to get. (budget: no more then $100)

i chose bose, because.. well.. aren't they good with audio? but, that's why i asked here first, before i placed my order :D

so... what i need exactly is some buds for my media phone to listen to music/watch tv shows between classes or when i'm on brake at work (using LG Dare).

the mic is fine for 'push-to-talk' but for voice activation its terrible. the problem is that it either picks up nothing short of a shout or it picks up every nose hair fluttering in the breeze.
if u use push to talk and set the sensitivity hi you are fine
 
I'm looking for a headset to use on the PS3 (headphones and mic). I don't think there is anyway to hook up a standard microphone to the PS3, and I can't wear a bluetooth headset while wearing headphones.

Whats the best cheap bluetooth/usb headset for around 50-75 bucks. (probably USB as I don't expect a decent bluetooth headset to sell for that cheap.)

Positional audio is more important than overall audio quality.

Yes it will sound fine but.....

If you have Vista, I would look at getting a usb dac/amp instead of a sound card.

I think the iBasso is an inexpensive one. So is the Zero dac.

Cool thing about the sb40s is that the mic cable and audio cable are separate enough to easily plug one into an amp and the other into the pc.
 
see updates of first post. beyer mmx 1 usb headset is now available for $100. Sure to be decent.

My advice? Leave it alone until there is more feedback. I cannot imagine that it is worth the same $$ as a receiver and a pair of real headphones or speakers.

Hey I have skim through this thread a bit and have a couple questions. First of all I'm high interested in what you can come up with spaceman I'm sure it can be way better than the Astro and cheaper :). I currently have the SB-40 Koss which sound GREAT I love it to death. I have it connected to my PC Chaintech AV-710 card, then I play the Xbox 360 through the line in on the card. Mic is connected through dantel's adapter and a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter(Mic is crap but gets the job done, planning on getting the Zalman mic). It sounds amazing I can hear things from the other side of the map.

Just one small problem first is I have the Xbox audio connected through Stereo(i.e Red and White Cables) sound card doesn't support optical in. Second is I can't tell when there coming from behind me or in front of me that well don't get me wrong I can tell sometimes but not all the time which has gotten me kill in clan matches which is unacceptable.

I was wondering what would be the best bang for the buck option to get SS keeping my current headphones. I don't care if its "real" or not as long as I can tell where the enemy is coming from thats all I care about. I hear Dolby Headphone is good so I would want something that supports it. Space is no problem so I have no problem going the receiver way or the amp way. I also have no problem getting another sound card (I'm very knowledgeable in computers so software processing is also an option if possible). Just list ANY option that you think is the best bang for the buck. I don't know much about audio so please excuse my ignorance in the subject
 
There are primarily two headphone virtualization technologies you can use here: Dolby Headphone, which is a licensed technology, and CMSS-3D, which is a proprietary Creative technology. While there have been some comparisons made between the two, there's no established "best". It seems to boil down to personal preference more than anything.

So, if you snag yourself an X-Fi, you'll be using CMSS-3D for headphone virtualization. If you instead grab a card based on a C-Media chip, like the CMI-8788 Oxygen HD, you'll get Dolby Headphone. There are plenty of options for C-Media cards out there, so it depends on your budget as well as other needs. If you're looking for a little extra gaming performance, you might lean toward an X-Fi.

As for the X360 input question, I actually don't have an answer for that. I don't know which cards support decoding from the S/PDIF input and which don't (I'll have to get around to figuring that out at some point).
 
Is for the Xbox 360 that I want SS, I'm not looking into pc gaming for awhile. So the solution has to be compatible with the 360 thanks for the reply though I learn about the other virtualization technologie which I had no idea about.
 
For the 360 you might want to consider a Sherwood 6500 or another receiver with dolby digital stereo via optical. This will give you the maximum sound stage with the 360. Via analogue, you get stereo and are missing a huge pile of effects obviously. If there is something cheaper than the 6500 at $120 which does this and has a decent amp let me know. I can't think of a better solution to your question atm.

That BF bad company demo was insane sounding with my sherwood. Best game sound ever actually. Too bad the game sucks lol.

Yup. Without a sub they are weak sauce with the bass. Point was to keep the price at $200 and be better than any "pc speaker" setup. They are that with a sub. You should get the better version if you can afford it though.

yeah i want comfortable around the ear or what ever they are called. I want them to be closed so i can have music loud in the car and not disturb anyone else.

i have had those- they sound decent but arent really around-the-ear so much as sits on the ear. can handle a lot of power. panasonic rp-htx7 are decent also and can be found at stores- they work well with portable players too
 
Anyone know a B&M retailer I could grab the SB-40s from to try out? I grabbed a pair of Plantronics 365s for the hell of it (yeah yeah yeah, I just happened to be at Fry's and wanted a headset, no internet access to check up on it) and the sound is either hollow compared to my cheapy Sony headphones (MDR-V150s) or I have to turn it up pretty high and it creates a sort of pressure that makes me feel a touch light-headed (or maybe this is simply cause this is a closed set). Also, is the mic on the SB-40 really that bad? I'm looking for a headset since standalone mic's are rather annoying picking up a bunch of stuff and I'd like to keep things on the cheapy cheap. I suppose the Zalman would work better, but if the stock mic is at least sorta functional that's fine. Mainly looking at this for gaming, but I do like my music also.
 
The Sb40 is really a great headphone for the $$. It has pretty full range with slightly rolled off highs aka not bright. The zalman mic fits nice on the headset boom with a little adhesive lol. Just Stick that sucker on there however you please. fpshero actually replaced the mic physically. The stock mic either works great or not at all btw. Seems to depend on the system or something but do not count on it working. No idea WHY they did that to an otherwise great headphone.
