Now i know I like in Michigan and our economy is shit, and it does help that i work a job that i like paycheck to paycheck, but where the hell does everyone get the money to get bad ass setups??

Because if you got a good job and make that great of money I am moving where you live lol.

Ummm at work probably, same place I do. Plenty of people have decent jobs. Also if you don't have a family, it can be fairly easy to keep your expenses low. I personally don't eat out much and don't spend money on things like an expensive car and so on. As such, I have a fair bit to put towards my computer.

Simple, I spend less money than I make. People waste way too much money going out to bars, to eat, and other shit they don't need. I never go out to bars, I only go out to eat 1-2 times a month, usually for fast food. It also helps that I live 1 mile away from work. 6 months out of the year I basically park my car and either ride my moped or mountain bike around. With that arrangement 1 gallon of gas lasts me 2 weeks. Just think about how much money that saves vs commuting in a car every day!!

With my current bills and spending habits, I have about $800 per month to spend how I please after everything else is paid off. I use that money to support my computer hardware and console gaming addiction. In 2 years my car and student loans will be paid off (I'm making double payments) and when that happens I will have 0 debt and a car with only about 30,000 miles on it which will add another $700 to my monthly disposable income.

It really helps that I am single and don't have any kids. I have no financial obligations to anyone besides myself.

For me, I am finishing school and have zero credit card debt. If you look at the Speaker Pics thread and you see my system, the majority of that was paid for by turning over equipment at proper times with minimal loss in initial investment. The initial investment (though not truly an investment) was paid for by my savings from my summer jobs.

As I began accumulating more stuff, my scholarship paid for the rest of it.

My car was bought by my parents initially (downpayment and first year payment)... but I am beginning to pay for it next month. My watch was given to me by my parents as a graduation present (a Rollie).

I eat out a lot - this week's menu was Cheesecake factory, Brasserie Jo french for Valentines, mexican, and all-american pub. I go to bars and clubs frequently, watch movies at the Chicago's AMC21. Again, this was paid for by scholarships.

The main thing is I worked hard to get to where I am, and I have no problem spending the rewards.

Also, having a high-paid gf helps too! :)

On a more serious side, I try to save money where I can. I always turn off my heaters and a/c when I leave the apartment. I try to garner income by having my friends rent out the living room for a month or two offering them a place to stay 1 block from the hospital while getting money on the side. Little things here and there add up. For example, my heating bill was $70 last month, my upstairs neighbor's bill was over $140! Another example would be the rent help I get.... two friends = $200x2! Not bad.

Simple: Live within your means and save up. I live in Michigan too; it's just a matter of saving. Avoid fast food and going out to the bar. In fact, alcohol in general gets expensive way fast. Buy only what's essential; buy used whenever you can.

I do things the same way most folks do: I save up (in my case, the saving up is compounded by the fact that I generally save up to pay cash for everything, because I have no credit cards). Therefore, when I do upgrades, I generally buy locally, do my own due-dilligence, and pay cash. I also try to avoid paying too much for anything. However, it also means that I am a major *sales-hawk*: I always have an eye out for local sales on computer hardware (I also get the weekly e-circulars from MicroCenter and MarketPro Shows, in addition to NewEgg.). That also doesn't stop me from doing odd jobs to earn additional money for specific items (my sound card upgrade was paid for that way).

credit cards imo

None here. No debt anyway. I use credit cards, I just pay them off each month. Not only is it good for your credit rating, I've made 240 bucks in cashback rewards from Discover over the last 12-16 months. Plus gotten $100 off a PS3 and I'm sure I've got some Sony reward points sitting around somewhere. Free money!

where does everyone get the money

I work for a gold mine.

Gold = $901.70/oz. The shittier the dollar gets, the more job security I have. Which is working out pretty well lately.

Over the last year I went a little crazy on purchases (here's the biggest one:))

But now I'm settling down and saving more. Last thing I've got to buy is a new desktop PC (probably once the new quads drop and maybe the next high end GPU from nVidia). Then I'll pretty much be done with electronics for a long while. I might add an Emotiva XPA-5 or XPA-2 to my system but they're certainly not necessary and other than that I'm pretty much perfectly happy with everything I own.

i bought my first serious setup (cdp, amp, speakers) with the money i earned in my first summer job, used that setup for 10 years, saved up and upgraded recently to a new system.

for my shops system i bought a used amp, it's an great one and it didn't cost me much.

buying used is definately an option if you were on a budget.

0 debt, leasing a car at 380/mo, and having a 35% expense to income ratio means I set aside >$2000/mo for savings/investment, and that's AFTER standard retirement stuff (401k etc).

And I consider myself pretty poor.

I live with a relative for super cheap. I don't have car payments. I pay 3 digits/mo for all my expenses, and I make decent money....

Oh, how interesting, since you're showing off your car, here are both my gems...

Nice G. I looked at a 37 (and the new 335) when I lived in the lower 48 but since there was a high probability I was going to be moving to AK I decided it wasn't practical and went another route.
