I am looking to build a new system but i don't want to put in 1000's of dollars in a system if the new DDR2 format is coming out next month.. anyone have any idea when the release date is for the new AMD..

I probably wouldn't waste money on a am2 system for at least a year. Aren't they the same procs just able to use DDR2 now?

we're assuming that they are, but AMD is being so tight about info it's honestly hard to say if there's anything added aside from just ddr2 support

however, expect a launch on may 23rd (my bday woot!)

Just wait. AM2 is supposed to have a longer life than 939. More room to upgrade down the road.

Hopefully the AM2 chips will overclock well at the low-end or it wont be an upgrade going from an Opteron 165 at 2.8-2.9GHz to something running at like 2.5-2.6GHz.

Yeah, no sense in going 939 if you're just building a system now. If you already have 939 though, no sense in going AM2

The only thing it offers is ~3% performance boost at most, amd 65nm down the road. That's the reason to upgrade in the future

well see. depends on how fast ddr3 makes it.

The other issue of course is if you're waiting for AM2, there will probably be some significant price gouging right off the bat. Might be later in June/July before prices reach MSRP's.

OCZ Tony and Sentential from Mushkin have both said it's impossible for DDR2 CPU's and Mobo's to work with DDR3

Could be pin compatible though, just won't work

Motherboard issue or is it just the memory controller? I can see there being a DDR2/DDR3 version of CPU's, but if it's pin compatible, I'm not sure why the mobo wouldn't work with a bios flash for possible memory voltage adjustments, etc.

If your going to build and you can wait for AM2, why not wait for possible Conroe if the performance is what everyone says it is to be i think it would be a mistake buying an AM2 - of crouse we wont know that until either socket / chip is out.

Can someone make a time machine ?

was going to build this in january but the funds weren't there so i had to wait tell now..now i found out about this... i thought it was going to be late summer before it came out..
asus a8n32sli mobo
4800x2
3 gigs ocz
dual 7900 gtxs

what to do.... what to do....

one day we are going to have longer than a few months before the latest hardwear is outdated...

If you were wanting 3 gigs of ram then memory performance must not matter too much to you so AM2 wouldnt help a bit ;) I dunno why everyone is stressing so much over this new socket though. Motherboards are usually a drop in the bucket in price compared to processors, ram on the otherhand is expensive.... but ohwell if you already have some.

i say wait...in a month you can build a system that has newer specs, faster (even if only 3%), and most importantly the possibility for 65nm CPU architecture in the future among many other upgrades. I know waiting in the computer world is sometimes futile but in some cases when you are close to a new architecture might as well wait. I just bought an X1900XT but if DX10 was a month away i would have waited. Thats my 2 cents :D

Hmm.. The big thing with AM2 coming out is it will most likely lower current CPU prices though. Thats the main thing i'm waiting for befor geting my next system.
