whats your dream CPU?

Desktop version of Pentium M, hyperthreaded, dual core, 1066FSB, 4mb cache.

dream cpu? how about dual core 939 a64 , gimme that at 2.6ghz or higher and i'd be done.

I second this.

Then again a 6XX on an NForce5 board with a 300 fsb would be enough to make me smile. Heck a 640 w/300 fsb would be running at what? 4800Mhz? Now that's not too much to ask for on air now is it?

FX-55!!

i am tierd of intel changing sockets making stupid decisions, 478 - dead, 775 - new but almost dead also... i can't get a 478 socket 3.4c processor, because it's unsupported by intel now.

Let's see, do I want Socket 754, 940, 939, 900 or M2? WOW, it's a good thing AMD sticks to one socket, you, a very good thing.

64bit Power 5 with a 32MB L2 with about 24GB of RAM!

Donnie

I want a AMD 64 Bit Dual Core that will upgrade it self every 6 months. :)

3.46EE or Athlon FX 55. I also wouldn't mind an SLi setup on a pair of Dual Xeon's or Opterons.

Dual Core Opterons/FX (I want a dual CPU MB as well, so, if there's an FX dual board out there, then FX, if not Opteron) and clocked at 3.0+ Ghz....

AMD really needs to reach 3.0 Ghz....

Pentium M's don't need Hyperthreading. HT makes use of extra pipeline stages not ordinarily used by most instructions and tasks Thus making the CPU more effecient. There aren't enough pipeline stages in the Pentium M architecture. If anything it would be a performance hit to add HT.

i came up with a system that i called "technetium"... it would create a (rudimentary, i assure you) artificial intelligence by mimicking the human brain to the best of modern technology's capability... yet still fit in a pc case.

i was up a bit too late that night i think :D

actually, that level of craziness can (on average) be applied to almost all of my ideas... altho i am having one atm that seems to be working quite well.

Does my Dream CPU have to be Real?...

It would be AMD, and clocked at some insane speed..6Ghz, so things loaded so quickly that no one in the friggin world could complain.

You don't understand, we have clients, complain Photoshop loads slow (I timed it at 1 seond from the click to the icon to appear, and then 5 seconds!!) They are Dual G5's! Gahhh. If I could just get a CPU + all the components to push information so ridiculously fast those people couldn't complain that would be my dream computers.

The answer to slow loading would be a faster harddrive and harddrive interface.

Psh...

A pair of 3.6 Xeons.
If its something that actually exists.

Supermicro X6DA8 and a Pair of QuadroFX 4400's to go with it...and 16GB RAM...

Realisitc, a pair of 3.2/533/1MB's for m X5.

A cpu operating @ 63mhz running xp10000 not requiring a heatsink or fan with an actual core size of 36nm ;)

My dream CPU would be the following:

Intel Donothan based
60 nm design
5Ghz Clock Speed
2000mhz FSB
Dual Core
2MB dedicated L2 Cache Per Core
512KB L1 Cache (AMD Caching example, not intel's design)
Memory Controller on Die, supporting Quad Channel DDR2 500Mhz

and as long as im dreaming, hows about putting the PCI-Express lanes directly on the die as well.

That should do it! :D

Intel processor. 8 logical cores (4 hyperthreaded), each clocked at 5GHz, 32MB of cache, low power consumption, low heat outpoot, overclocks like a beast. Oh yeah, and of course, creaming AMD is a must :D

Realistically? An FX-55, with old-fashioned water cooling. Sure, this is an Intel forum. But the P4 3.46EE/1066 MHz FSB/DDR2-533 combination has proven to be pretty disappointing for the laughable costs involved. It's what, 1% faster than the 3.4EE on an old Socket 478 mobo with DDR400?

Intel HAS been disapointing....

Although, the new EE has me intrested in it... Dual Core HT sounds good to me, as long as it doesn't cost 1000+

I wish AMD would get some kind of HT tech going on with their CPU's.....

A pretty slow one, only 2 GHz, say.

But with zero memory latency, and no cache -- because there's zero memory access latency.

And lots of general purpose registers.

Maybe I can start with an Itanium 2, and work-out the zero-latency part. It's not the voltage that kills you. It's the latency.

.B ekiM

HAL 9000

Kidding. :p

FX-55... oh wait, got that already... P4C 2.4 that can OC to 3.4GHz+, oh, no... got that one too. :D

Well thinking realistically right now..

Dual Core Pentium M - 3Ghz Per Core, Hyperthreading Enabled, 2MB L2 Cache per core, Shared 4MB L3 Cache, On Die DDR2 667 Dual Channel Memory Controller

Intel is more reliable, although i can't say that the 64 bit sucks, never used it, but the recent athlons i have freeze like mofos, i mean coolant is no problem, i guess i just have had a hard time over the years, i started off with amd for 2 years and got an intel, intel just works better! :D ;)

I would say, for the time beeing, I would really like to put my hands on a P4 3.4EE ES

Para

USMC2Hard4U that would be nice.

thinking unrealistically :)

1024 core 3GHZ pentiumM that uses 0.1 watt of power, they are all connected by optical hypertransport. Each core has a seperate 4GB cache so you dont need any actual ram :)

Ah, the FUDS machine strikes again. H3lp! H3lp! 1'm 4 f4nb0y!

Double Phase Change on a 3.46EE

meh... more realistically... phase-change cooled Dothan core somethingorother.

i remember hearing somewhere around here that they can totally pwn fx-55's when oc'd right.

i like amd. i have a p4 but i like amd. i think amd step on their on foot with the amd 64 4000+, that's not like a p4 4ghz... !!! :| ???
but i like that fx 55!

Via C3, phase change cooling, OC'd to 1.2 Ghz + A Volari Duo

This system would own everyone!

One Gigahert to rule them all,
One Graphics Core to find them,
And a second Graphics Core to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

c3 cpu's, from what i've heard... really aren't what you'd be looking for. that's why it's so surprising (to me) that a dothan core cpu can pwn a fx-55... it just doesn't sound right.

but i can assure you that with c3's... the power just isn't there... it's not hiding, waiting to be discovered like with a dothan core, it just plain doesn't exist!

<grammer nit-pick>
and gigahertz is both singular and plural.

I wasn't sure about the gigahertz thing so thanks for the heads-up. I guess you must not be a video card guy because then you would have gotten that I was joking - the Volari Duo is a complete JOKE!! It costs about $450 and gives you the performance of a radeon 9600. :p
