What's in your Doom III box?

Uhm...

I've got an XP1800+ with 512MB and an ATI 8500DV video card...

Think my system will have enough juice to run D3 w/out making my eyes bleed?

cpu can push...but you really need to upgrade that vid card....the 8500 is around geforce 2 speeds.....you prolly won't get much play with that card with ANY effects on and more than 800x600 res!

Damn.. well, I really didn't use the dv part of my card much anyway... guess it'll go up on ebay.. heh

I would say with your cpu and mem....I would go for nothing less than a 9800pro or GF5900. If you really want all the goodies from the game then do a x800pro or GF6800 and up your cpu to a 2500+ Barton or better and get some faster ram. Then you can get some serious frame rates with lots or res and eyecandy.........As it was ment to be!!!!!

Yea, the GF6800 is out.. budget's not gonna support a $300 video card.. heh

The GeForce FX 5900 128MB card at $170 is about what I'd pay for a new card.
The RADEON 9800 Pro 128MB card is within reach at $193 too...

Now I've gotta go look up benchmarks.. haven't kept up with current hardware in the last year or so, so I'm a little behind.. think the 2500+ was out when I bought my 1800+ - been a while. :)

Maybe someone can recommend the best sub-$200 video card out...

You can get an MSI Radeon 9800pro 128mb at eXtremegear for just under 2 bills!!!!!
And an AMDXP 2800+ Barton at Portatech for under $100!!!
And if you found a 6800 for $300....I would jump on it....those puppies are selling for over 4 bills everywhere else........lol One worth having that is...I do mean the 6800 GT 256mb....not the 128mb

Either the eVGA, or the BFG would be the only 2 i would buy!

DFI infinity Nf2 ultra
barton 2800+
512MB mushkin pc3200
Sapphire radeon 9800pro 256MB, soft-modded to xt speeds
onboard sound :/

and hopefully a nice pair of sennheisers

I am debating on whether or not to sell the 2800+ because it is superlocked, and buy a mobile xp 2400+ and slap on a zalman or sp97 on it to Oc the crap out of it.

I have a X800 Pro on the way because I got a real good deal on it($315),which I am grateful for because if I would have had $400 I think I would have gone mad deciding which card to buy.Anyways, nice to see that no matter which brand you decide to buy...Nvidia or ATI...You'll get your moneys worth from both this time around.

Can't wait for August 5!

not the best one, but I think it will run just fine, and yeah I preordered it already :D

Athlon 64 3200+ (1mb cache)
512MB Samsung RAM

err wait, why am I posting this anyways, go read my sig :p

should be good enough

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512MB (2x256) Corsair LLPT
Geforce 3 Ti200

Onboard sound paired with Sony MDR-V300's should be enough to keep me happy...

I know I'll need to upgrade the video card (thinkin 9800pro 128MB) but I'm also thinking that doubling the RAM should help. Then again, I many get a whole new system when HL2 comes out. Bah, whatever, it's only money.

Athlon 64 3400+ 1 MB L2 cache
1 x 1 GB Samsung PC3200 2-3-3-6-1T

Radeon 9800 Pro w/ OCZ copper ramsinks and Arctic Silencer @ 440/370
Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 w/ Logitech Z-640
and of course the most important thing....

a dark room

I'm definitely ready to play, my only concern is with the video card... I feel quite confident a well OC'ed 9800 Pro can handle Doom 3, I'm just not sure how well. I want to play 10x7 with full eye candy at 30 fps min at all times, but judging from the way FarCry runs with those settings, it's gonna be close. Then again OpenGL is a whole different beast I guess, and if anyone knows how to code an efficient engine I would say it's the guys at Id, so we'll see.

Maybe I'll just use this as an excuse to buy a 6800GT :D

Problem with benchmarks is that nobody's benchmarked Doom 3 except for HardOCP once a long time ago, in which nvidia swept ATI, but that's back before the game was even close to being released, so drivers were not ready for Doom 3 yet. Conventional wisdom of course says that NV owns in OpenGL, but who can reall say for sure? When one of the most anticipated games of all time comes rolling around, you better bet your sweet azz that the vid guys are gonna make sure their stuff is up to snuff

Some of you with the 21' monitors might want to pick you up a 17' and play doom3 becuase of the high video resolution you must have to make a 21' look good. Personally I find you need atleast 1280x960 on a 21' monitor. However, if you switch to a 15' 1024x768 looks just as good if not better. I have just ordered me a new system but I cancelled my purchase of the 6800ultra in it. The reason of this is because doom3 requires a 512mb card to be able to play it in the ultra setttings. And I can assure you soon there will be 512mb versions of the ati and nvidia flavor comeing soon. Anyways my 9800pro will be good enough for me until one of the 512mb versions comes out in a few months.

Anybody know how much the game itself is going to cost? I imagine with all the hype it's something ridiculous.

Pre-ordered Doom3 here in the UK for £25 which works out at $47. £25 is a good deal, especially for such a big game.

Hopefully my box will be up to the task :)

I need a new soundcard and some more hardrive space when i get some more money.

the second beta of doom 3 runs fine on it at 1280x1024 with most of the details turned up. i think everyone is worrying way too much about this game and their hard ware. remember they have been working on this game for like a year and a half now, and it was supposed to be released at christmas time last year. they cant make that many changes to it that would cause the hardware from december of last year to not be able to run the game.
i think the game is way to over hyped. before farcry came out everyone was like oh my god, my system might not be good enough to run it, i better upgrade or even build a new $700 system just so i can play it at 1600x1200 with all the details turned up etc, then it was released and it can run in a playable state on 128mb integrated graphics (1024x768 all settings at "medium")

I dunno, I'm itching for an upgrade...

Athlon XP 2500+ (no OC)
1GB Kingston PC3200
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
ATi Radeon 9800XT
WD 74GB Raptor
Lite-On 52x Burner

I'm thinking new board, proc, and DVD drive (believe it or not, I don't have one).

It's a toss up between the MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R and Asus K8V SE Deluxe. I'll probably get a 3200+ and slot-loading DVD.

I think you could get a better experience with D3 if you OCd the 2500 to at least 2.2GHz, got a 6800GT, and an Audigy2 ZS (assuming u also have some good speakers) that should still be cheaper than the combo u descibed and produce better frame rates.

D3 depends more on videocard, ram, and sound then it does CPU (within reason of course)

If you're talking about the 2ghz/9500np pro box, you're dreaming unless you like 800x600 low details.

His sys will be just fine. This is NOT a bash each others systems thread.

althought the 8500DV is slower than the 8500 (lower core clock) its nowhere near geforce2 speeds....

When the 8500 was launched it was a hair faster than a Geforce3....then ati finally started making good drivers and 9 months later (and currently) an 8500 is largely equal to a Geforce 4-Ti4200.

That being said he could definitly still use a videocard upgrade (but its not as if its totally useless).

Wotok, if I were you Id definitly swap out the CPU to whatever max your mobo can handle as AthlonXPs are so crazy cheap (get at least a 2500 or 2800) and if at all possible get a 9700 or 9800 Pro (or an AIW 9700 if u want to keep ur 8500DV style stuff). Then you should be ready to roll.

Soon to get a Volari V8 Duo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why........Imma say that a 9800xt would be the better choice.....I know the dual head is a great card....but as far as performance a quality go....I would stick with nv or ati....for their driver support is far better than the rest....in my opinion!

Sorry.... I forgot to </sarcasm> Seriouslly tho , I am waiting for my 6800UE to arrive , hopefully before Quakecon :fingerscrossed:
