What keeps you going to Intel?

I remember having VIA chipset motherboard with AMD 1.3GHz nearly 5 years ago and the USB mouse would hang randomly. So annoying as I'd have to hit the restart button

I've had that problem with some older Logitech Optical mice and HP XW5000's using Intel chipsets. Un-plug the mouse, and plug it back in. That's all you have to do to fix the problem.

(Now, this isn't directed at any one person, really, this is a post for all the people who say things like: "I got a bad nforce board once, they are all crap!".)

It's really funny how people get a bad board and then jump to all sorts of conclusions. When one's USB stops working now and then why blame VIA immediately? Here is a small and incomplete list of some of the things that could have gone wrong:

Was this a windows issue? Was windows updated all the way? Did you have correct and updated drivers? Are you sure you did not have a virus? Did you have any other malware? Are you sure this problem was not caused by the MB manufacturer; why blame the chipset maker when Asus (or whatever) messed up the baord? Are you sure this wasn't a power supply issue; many odd things can happen when the system is under powered? Are you sure that you didn't have some bad memory which was corrupting the system or USB drivers in memory? Must I really go on?

And then, you need to consider that _no_one_ is perfect, and all manufacturers make mistakes, now and then. Are you really telling me you are so impulsive and judgemental that not only will you stop using products from MB maker X, but you will actively try and convince other people from not buying products from X as well?

The attitude here is simply shocking! I have received broken products from about every manufacturer of almost every componenet type most PC people use. If I follow the flawed logic presented here, I wouldn't have anyone to buy parts from anymore!

Come on people, your signle/handfull of purchases are not indicative of anything. Until we see a reputable study done with an enormous sample size, making all these "well my X from maker Y sucked!" posts is a waste of everyone's time, and fankly, does nothing but help spread missinformation that does nothing in the end but hurt the consumers who come here for advice.

VIA was hit and miss, anyone talking about never having problems with them are either extremely lucky or lying!

Actually if it was a MS Mouse, the Wheel Mouse Optical 1.0's were known to have a on/off problem. I mean, literally, the light would just turn off for no reason. I thought it was my A7V...but on the forums I found I wasn't the only one, and it definitely was happening on other mobos/chipsets.

Well my problem was clearly a different one. I just wanted to draw a comparison. The system I dealt with was Intel based. My point being that all chipset makers can put out products with issues.

I've heard about some parts (maybe a specific southbridge) having problems with Creative Soundblaster and I only used onboard sound.

What are the problems that I am "extremely lucky" to not have encountered?

PCI-Latency problem. In fact, most Via users ended up using a patch this guy made.
That patch gave pretty big boosts in IDE transfer rates too.

I believe the SB Live! malfunctioning could also be attributed to the PCI-Latency problems...

Lol, southbridge? You mean THE 686B southbridge bug? *barf*

Fortunately I only had the 686A...but I was that close to disaster haha.

Really? Which chipsets?

George Breeze's PCI Latency Patch that only partially worked.

The Bug was part of 686B, not SBLive that worked on everything from BX to i875, yes I still have a VIA board (DFI CT-694 Sc-370/P3-866) and SBLive to prove it.

Epox KX-133
ABit KT-133 and 133A both had follow on Revisions but the very first ones of each should have been recalled.

Pro-133 for Intel, sucked big ones, so did the A.

Weak memory controller on at least 5 models.

Weak (but worked) I/O.

1 to 5 revisions of most chipsets.

Same goes for the first versions of the KT-266 and KT-333.

Their problem was reverse Engineering didn't always have good results. They used their customers for Beta testers. Hell, nVidia did as well. Now they have the licenses and are making better stuff. Look for them to go back to their old ways to save money on license fees. ;)

Now after having to try 3 different BIOS's and running PQI DDR4000 at DDR-333, two mice and 3 different ribbon cables, I have the A8N SLI stable. That's the kind of shit that keeps folks going back to Intel  It's another reason I didn't go dual, I need to learn more tricks, Intel has made me lazy!

A64 3500+ Venice and Zalman CNPS 7000Cu
Case 301B (Black) Super Flower
Antech 550W TP 2.0 SLI
Asus A8N SLI
1GB of PQI PC-4000 at PC-2700
250GB WD SE 16MB Cache SATA-II, WD2500KS
Floppy
NEC DVD RW ND-3540A
Lite-ON COMBO SOHC-5232
ATI X800XL Retail
Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music
Running Windows 2K Pro for now.
Analog and Digital connection to a Pioneer 5.1 receiver and good speakers.
MS KB and Mouse
One 21" CRT and one 19" CRT.

Once I get some burn in time, know-how and etc.. I''ll overclock and then when I'm comfortable, I'll go X2.

Nightmares for me since I owned those boards (except KT-266/333) and they were MY problems hehehehe!

I finally have my A64 rig up and running. It needed a BIOS flash right out the Box but was too unstable to risk it. I used my older Kingmax PC-3500, it didn't like my PQI PC-4000 that I'm using now but at 333 instead of 400. Now that its stable, I can say its not bad at all.

I almost went back to AMD but decided to just wait for Conroe to get here. AMD on VIA was a match made in hell. I'm still not convinced about the stability of NVIDIA, but am glad to see you got yours working.

I'm not either but I just took a chance. Thanks! The last BIOS flash seemed to do the trick. Except for the RAM.

I did get my RAM set to DDR400 CAS3 6-3-3-8 2T or so but I'm starting to see Grimlins. I've used X-Fi on my i875 since August. I had Zero problems. Last night, Channels started switching, I lost sound and it started sounding like a Guitar Na-Wa footswitch. I ran the speaker test and the rear was gone and the Front Center Came from the left speaker and the left speaker said right front. I rebooted and this went away  But maybe this is a Win2K X-Fi problem?

Now I don't have a lot of stuff setup because I'm going to do a fresh WinXP install.

Now that AMD has solved their instability and heat problems. What draws people to buy Intel processors over AMD processors? AMD has either exceeded or matched Intel performance at a similar pricepoint, why buy Intel? I'm not trying to start a flame war, but it just seems that AMD has all of the advantages nowadays, but many people still insist on Intel.

me too!!! I'm pretty warm yo!!

Running P4 3.06E 1mb cache HT enabled prescott CPU.

actually , considering my computer needs and habits, Intel WAS the way for me because of hyperthreading (and now without, bah its back to the cheapest and more processing per watt for the next 2 years if im gonna upgrade)

consider my habits:
opera 8 browser with 40++ windows,
bitcomet with 6-20 simultaneous running torrents,
AVG antivirus,
Spybot S&D running teatimer protection in background ,
MSN and Yahoo IMs,
Winamp playing mp3's
Sygate free firewall protecting my com against port scans and active responses
AND running a 3d game like FarCry.

Tried the same on a 3000+ Vernice core A64 and the computer "choked" while running games......Sure loading is slower but i get playable stuff compared to my friend who has to turn off his BT-ing / IM and browser or the game will be "chunky" ingame.
Damn weird.

Also playing a DVD movie, if someone logs in and MSN shows ("pops") up , u can actually see a split second LAG in the DVD playback on the AMD device . Doesnt happen to me thou ^^

Just being curoius, any more "power users" like me?

oh btw the AMD users(my room mates) have one gig of ram while i only have 512Megs.
They might be faster but im smoother ^^

So so

, laptop Inspiron - dell 3.0C with HT What i got open right now:

Opera with mm, 28 tabs open
MSN - work account
Trillian
VNC viewer for work comps
Kasapersky anti V
SpyBot
Thuderbird - 9 accounts
Outlook for work email - 3g PST file to an exchange server
Excel, couple word Docs, a PDF
Photoshop PS with 4x 3mb images open
FlashFXP open 3 times - 2 downloading, one uploading

then decided i want to play AOEIII, i just play it, i dont close anything 9but @ work right now)

Also now i run the AIDS distributing computing thing - not while gaming, but no lag and that is with 1g of ram - on a laptop!!!! 7200RPm 60g drive...

lets see you AMD mobile users do all this :) and everything is still snappy :)

agreed..HT is golden. i'm running a rather antiquated northwood 2.6C at 3:

F@H (of course)
itunes playing music
objectdock
konfabulator
firefox with ~10 tabs
AIM
atnotes (sticky notes program)
avg antivirus
entbloess (a mac expose clone with xp :) )
palm desktop
microsoft word (stupid microbiology lab report)
outlook
avedesk

amazing, i'de say, for 'out of date' hardware.

Hyperthreading is over rated... Ive used many systems with Hyperthreading as well as owned one myself, its not all its talked up to be...

hmm what keeps me going to Intel?

Price of their motherboards, functionality of the chipsets.
And when you get your hands on working on something like this:

Big deal, I have a lot more stuff than that open on my work computer right now (except for the game) and its on a lowend Intel system without Hyperthreading. This is a poor example of power. And yes, AMD can do all that too (but game better at same time).

Hyperthreading is just a marketing scam, it doesn't actually do anything

I let anyone think what they want, they're allowed to have their own opinions last I checked. In my experience, the only place HT makes a difference is when you're running multiple applications, like say burning a CD and running a game, or surfing and ripping a CD. If you're only runnning one app, I don't see it making a difference. I've done very basic tests of ripping a CD and playing Source at the same time with HT on, and HT off, with HT on, I averaged about 15-25 FPS more. The rig is in my sig. I've also done different things with work. It certainly isn't "essential a dual core processor" it never was meant to be that..... But it does seem to help out in multitasking when compared to a non-HT proc.

Edit: BTW, I'm not an intel guy, I am a computer guy, I go with whatever is the best at the time I buy my equip. If I were to build a rig right now, it would be an Athlon X2, hands down.

people who claim that HT is the same as having a multi-proc cpu are very wrong, but in multitasking, i can definitely feel a difference with HT on and off (i just turned off HT from my BIOS because i was curious).
in any event, for such 'old' technology, it certainly still makes a difference in my day to day computing.

Here an example sitheris.

Run those same apps and Game with anything but an X2 will run slower=P That's NOT an opinion but fact. Hyperthreading works LOL! Like anything else, it is app dependent.

No, you did that just to ignite another flamewar in here...sad. :(

I really miss HT. :( One common task for me is video encoding and web browsing at the same time. With a P4 w/HT it's pretty smooth. With my P-M and A64 it's so laggy it's frustrating. I'll buy a X2 in the future (when it hits $200), unless Conroe is available first.

You do know that a lot of AMDs CPUs also have HT now? Like since the Althon +3200 64bit

The only AMD's that have anything related to hypertheading are dual cores that have the HT flag on in their cpu id.

So basically, everything Intel has ever put out is great? What about the PIII 1.13GHz, i820 w/MTH, etc etc.

Everyone forgets about those, but they damn AMD when they make the smallest mistake.

Additionally, anecdotal evidence is generally considered invalid. We need some hard figures on failure rates to actually come to any real conclusion.

Oh Sweet Jeebus, I had a P3 933 on a i820 mobo with "Blazing Fast Rambus Technology". As soon as I read that in your post my eye started to twitch.

I never understood why they matched rambus with a cpu that had such a narrow frontside bus.
