Just curious, what is the most expensive component you fried? How long ago was it? I've seen this posted on other hardware forums, and was curious to know how this went along on here as well, and to see how [H]ard you truly are! :D

my whole pc
it was a slot a athlon at about 866mhz. i took it to a lan and had trouble starting it so i changed the voltage in the back(rofl) and it got toasted, literally. flames shot out of the back and it stunk the room up :/ i gave my friend my video and soundcard thinking they worked :/
..i think a pci tv tuner was the only thing that survived. i promptly made a 1.4tbird system that surprisingly is still working, it's now at my sisters.

I burned up a $1000 RAID Card about 2 or 3 years ago.

I cried.

The list pretty much speaks for itself... And that was just the last 2 years... Most weren't my fault, but the ones that were, they were *almost* on purpose... As in, I knew what I was risking...

generic Socket A Motherboard
Generic 512MB DDR Memory (or was it pc133?)
GeForce FX5200
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (i think it was a deluxe)
Athlon XP 2200+
Athlon XP 2400+
Athlon XP 2800+
Several Generic Power Supplys 250w, 300w, 350w
TT 420w Purpower PSU
Maxtor 160GB Hard Drive
Radeon 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder
Radeon 9600 non-Pro 256Mb
PCI-E 6600GT
2x Gigabyte I915 PCI Express LGA775 Mobo
3x MSI Neo4 Platinum s939 mobo

i guess i come in 2nd with the simultaniously frying ?

Afx51+SK8N+1GB or corsair and 2x36GB raptors?

Turbo for a nissan 350z oh wait, you mean computer wise? ;)
Geforce 3

Oh shit- good point.

I let my friend borrow by Blazer for the weekend; he blew my 400 small block (1976). It was my fault looking back. That ended up being about a $1500 mistake.

BBA 9800pro, 2 months after they were released. I paid almost $600 for that card :( The core cracked from a custom HSF mod.

 dayum! remind me never to come over to work on hardware! j/k :)

3 x MSI Neo4 SLI's ???

my IC7-G, just this past december. trying to install h2o cooling and i was screwing on the block and the plyers dug right into some circuits.

stupid, stupid, stupid.

Aaah man, that the shits :(

I baked a MM980 series Peavey Media Matrix main frame with the dsp cards installed. Total cost was $35,000. I was working on installing a sound system in a arena and the consultant dediced to make a site visit. He thought he would check out the main frame and opened it up and pulled one of the dsp cards out to look at it. When he put it back in he snapped it back in to hard and knocked one of the ram chips loose. When I turned the system back on the loose ram chip sent a subsonic spike through the whole system over the comm bus and smoked the whole rig. I hate consultants.

PNY Verto GF4 Ti4600, died after about 2 years of 24/7 use.(o/c) $400
Enermax 380W PSU died after 1 year 24/7 use. $100
P4 2.4c, popped the heatspreader off and it didn't work after that.(trying to hit 3.6ghz) $174
BFG 6800GT, NV Silencer 5 killed it after 3 months. $400
Grand total = $1074

My freshman year of college i bought a 40 gig harddrive for $150 bucks or so, had some buddies over when i was installing it, they passed around the drive to look at it, one of them dropped it, it died. But i've never fried anything, had a few parts up and die, but never cause i overclocked them or anything.

Yeah... That was MSI's fault actually, I couldn't get my 3500+ winnie and Mushkin lvl1 RAM to POST and even though the RAM was on the QVL for the mobo it decided to fry the board somehow... and having connections at 'Da Club (PC Club) I grabbed 2 more which had the same thing happen... Anyway, I got my refund and an apology from MSI and I got an ASUS A8V-E Deluxe which has worked like a charm... Actually all of that stuff on there was either NOT my fault or was on purpose where I was pushing the limits... Like the 2400+ and 2800+ and 9800 Pro AIW for example... :(

Let's see. 2x athlon 64 socket 939 3000+ @ $270 for both. That really sucked. (See sig)

I didn't do it, but did watch one of my colleagues fry a SGI Origin 2k Dual Processor card a couple years ago. He hadn't grounded himself and a clear blue spark jumped between his finger and some component on the board. He installed it anyway and sure enough he had fried something on the board. I think the replacement cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000. It has been over 5 years now so I am not sure of the cost, but sufficed to say it was enough that I am now a freak about grounding myself when working on anything electronic.

a GeForce2 is the only thing I have totally toasted. It was an OEM pull and didnt have any cooling whatsoever, not even passive cooling, but that didnt stop me from OCing it. She didnt last long.

I don't know if fried is the right term, but when I was first learning about computers the guy that was teaching me some stuff explained to me that IDE cables were keyed, and you could never plug them into a HDD if the key was the wrong way. I had an unkeyed IDE cable and destroyed one of the HDDs pins...that was a pain in the ass, let me tell you..

An old Intel VC820 motherboard. I was transferring it to a different case and forgot to remove an unnecessary motherboard riser. Then there's just the stuff that broke from normal wear and tear. IntelliMouse Explorer, DVD burner, 2 hard drives (up and died one day).

I've only fried 2 parts ever in 16 years: an Athlon 1GHz and a Duron 850MHz.

The (single, not 3 tab) heatsink clip broke and killed the 1GHz in a second. That was a nice processor... it did 1.5GHz on regular air cooling. :( $150 down the drain, but at least I got 6 months use out of it.

The Duron was heartbreaking because I was just testing it before giving it away. One tiny chip in the corner and it was dead. It was only worth $25 or so, but i hated to ruin a perfectly good processor.
