Hows this.... I'll bet that if you built a new box todya. Install Linux on one partition, then install windows on another. I'll bet that Linux has BETTER out of the box hardare support then windows. I'm talking about out of the box support, not third party. Just with the hardware drivers that come native with the OS.
Anybody want to take up that bet?
That's a small advantage at the cost of a much bigger disadvantage.
This kind of design scheme means each OEM has to release documentation to the kernel developers so that they can write embedded drivers, and this leads to a lag in the time between hardware release and kernel hardware support, and in practice also means support for less hardware features, and at worst, no support at all because it is at the OEM's discretion to give what data to which developers, if at all.
Personally I feel the cost of having to install third party drivers is well worth having full-featured hardware support for my os direct from the OEM at the time I purchase the hardware.
..and in actuality, I (and most of you I'm sure), end up installing closed source binary drivers for half of my hardware on my Linux distro anyway.
