What is my bottleneck here?

Hey guys, I just upgraded my video card from a 4870 1gb to a GTX 560 ti FPB, all of my system specs are in my sig. I'm currently playing rift, and on the 4870 at max settings I would hover between 20-30fps. With the new card I'm going between 25-34 or so fps, and I was expecting a bit more out of the upgrade. Do you guys think this is a hardware bottleneck? Or could it be software?

We need to know of the resolution and graphics quality level used before we can give you an answer as to where the bottleneck may be.

Have you experienced "performance issues" in other games?

Sorry, forgot about that. I run games at 1680x1050 in fullscreen windowed mode. I was using the "ultra" settings in rift on both cards, and I see a big fps boost in games like BFBC2 with the new card.

Do you play other games besides Rift and BFBC2? Are you seeing your overall gaming performance resemble more like Rift or more like BFBC2?

at 1680x1050, a HD4870 would still be capable of maxing most games of today. There would be a bit of CPU limitation on BFBC2, however, that's assuming you don't have HBAO enabled (DX11 only? iirc).

SC2, but that's not really a game to benchmark with. A friend of mine is running Rift at completely maxed settings on an AMD 6700 card with an i7 processor at 3.08 ghz and getting better FPS than I am. Not really sure what is up with that.

That is weird, but I don't know enough about Rift to determine how big of a role the CPU plays in overall performance.

Out of curiosity, which Core i7 processor (and AMD 67xx card) is your friend using?

Probably depends on the world, resolution, and whether the game benefits current Intel processor instruction sets.

Think he said a 920, wasn't specific past 6700, though

Ah, there are three HD6700 cards, with the HD6790 being a fair bit faster than the other two (since it's based on Barts, and not Juniper core).

Since Rift is an online game, would the connection have any affect on the FPS? Sorry if it sounds like a noob question.

It does in a way. I.e the slower the connection, the greater the lag which means lower performance and skipped frames.

However from the limited research I've done into Rift and hardware, it looks like it is a bit CPU dependent. Even more so than BFBC2. With that said, could be a game and driver incompatibility issue.

I asked because I play Rappelz and it can get real slow, but I think its more a software/server issue. I did notice that its more CPU dependent.

Now back to the OP. His CPU looks to be more than adequate. Driver problems maybe?
