thanks a bunch. Saved me a lot of money. You can pick up Corsair 800 for next to nothing but the 1333 is uber expensive.

Oh and Sunin the Abit board is not available anymore. So any MoBo suggestions are still welcome! Actually do you think a Shuttle could handle folding 24/7? They take up so little space so it would make it easier to add more as I go along.

Depends are you planning on OC'n? If so you will need space for a good aftermarket HSF. I prefer TRUE... if your going stock it might be able to handle it if you don't use anything else that is power hungry... I think they have a 250 watt PSU version if memory serves me.

Also, at 3ghz you get about 3,000 points, if memory serves me 2.4ghz = 2200 pts...

I prefer ATX cases they allow enough room to put several fans in and air flow = happy folding boxes... all mine have at leat 6 fans bare min... some have as many as 10.



 
The Antec NSK3480 is a nice small case with a decent power supply and I believe it can fit a TRUE if you remove the side vent hood. I think I'm going to continue to use it for all my future builds. Another good cheap option would be its big brother the NSK4480 since it can fit standard size ATX boards.
 
I hadn't seen that case IcedE. That is sharp looking. I'm sure the 380W PS in it will be enough too. I think I either have one somewhere or I put one in family's computers 5 years ago and they are still going strong. Do you have fans in the front? If so, what brand of 92mm fan do you use?

No fans in the front yet, and I'm not sure it will need it. The 120mm Noctua and the 120mm Antec Tricool on low seem to be doing a decent job. If I did add some I would probably go Nexus even though they are pricey as they have worked for me in the past and are fairly low noise as advertised. I can't find any 92mm Noctua or Yate Loon's from my normal shop, but they would be good as well.
 
excellent! i'll try it without at first as well.It looks like I'll be building a second machine. My girlfriend's son's computer is dying...it turns off without warning. I've checked to make sure everything is seated properly and checked the memory for problems. I have to go home to get another P/S to make sure its not it. This is a system that I inherited from her "computer guru" (Thieving B*&@ard) He took the original XP License and stole it and put a cracked version on it. He was supposed to make it a "top of the line gaming system" and she got a single core (last year) that was middle of the road AMD with integrated graphics and an 80gig HD plus 512MB Ram. Anyway to make a long story longer it is junk and I'm really not in a hurry to try to fix it. I'd rather replace it. Since this is getting off topic I'll take it to another thread. Thanks everyone for all your help!
 
1st Question:

At work we've been losing people and buying new PCs so we have... oh... about 150 computers sitting around. From 2.53ghz to 3.8ghz all Intel. Some have better processors than others. Maybe 30 2.53s, 40 3.0s, 20 3.4s and 60 3.8s.

If I hooked them all up to fold 24/7 (on a seperate network connection so my work isn't slowed down).
A) Would that take an inordinate amount of power? No monitors, I can just RDP into them...
B) How many points could I get per day? Is it a lot?


2nd question:

We are a company with many higher end PCs sitting around most of the night doing nothing. They range from 3.0ghz to dual core 2.2ghz HP xw4400s (most with NVidia Quadro 3700 video cards).
A) How much power would one use with about 250 PCs running at 100% for 16 hours a day?
B) How many points would we get per day? LOL

FAH drives the computer to 100% load.

If they're Core 2 Duos, a lot of points. If P4s, still a big number because of the volume, but not what you'd expect. Running for less than 24/7 will hurt.

Despite all these caveats, you'd be one of the top members of the team if not #1 if you went through with it.
 
My boss has been wanting to throw all the PCs at Seti@Home when they're idle, and I'm trying to convince him to do FAH instead. I think it's a better cause, and has a bit more reputation associated with it I think.
 
just tell him he can be part of the #1 team in the world....problem solved :D

LOL... He's the kind of guy that if we did do it and we WEREN'T #1 he'd throw more and more spare PCs at it until we were #1... He'd throw idle server cycles at it if we were #2 I think...
 
Just be careful. No amount of points, glory, money and women gained from that kind of borg is worth getting fired over. Remember, if anything goes wrong with any computer that FAH is on, and you can get thrown under the bus over it, theres a good chance that you'll get thrown under the bus over it regardless if FAH is behind the problem or not.
 
You really have to sell your boss on the idea he is donating to cure Parkinson's, etc.For me it is a much more tangible feeling I get from giving this type of donation. Usually you donate money and it just gets sucked into the large charity and you never see what was done with your money. With FAH you can even run a version that shows you the project as it is folding in a graphical way. I'm actually helping the researchers do their jobs instead of throwing money to a charity that over pays some of the top brass, etc.

He has a bunch of nVidia Quadro cards. Do you think those will fold with the new system or only consumer cards? If not I know you can turn a geforce into a quadro with a patch. Has anyone ever heard of a patch to take it the other way...a Quad to the Geforce?
 
the new client supports CUDA enabled Tesla and Quadro cards anyway, so he wouldn't even have to flash it down to a GeForce

Should be able to Fold with them no problem. The FX3700 is basically an 8800GT, so they should crank out some solid points.
 
Ok, so now that I've got one core dedicated to the GPU client, I'm going back to one instance of the console on my other core. Since I haven't really run the console in a while, can someone give me some Cliff's Notes on the config settings to max out the points on it?
 
if you run it with the -forceasm tag, you'll get the bonus WUs that are rolling right now....getting 700-1000 PPD on one of those on a Q6600 @ 3.1

How about the big/normal/small on the WUs? I set it up with big and got a wonderful 119 point Amber that's gonna take 12 hours to finish. 238PPD on a 3.5GHz core...yay! :p
 
i think mine is set to big on the quad, but I am running exclusively with -forceasm on all standard clients....my P4 1.8 gets around 150 PPD, my Athlon 64 3500 gets around 350 PPD, my C2D T7400 laptop gets around 700 PPD and my quad gets around 1000 PPD.
