Wow :eek: Those numbers are really impressive Evil, thanks for keeping us in the "loop" (posting results frequently :D)

Now, for a question, that may be a bit off topic, so I apologise in advance. I just set up a notfred diskless folder. (E6420, "el cheapo" mobo, only 512 MB's RAM and a 4GB flash drive)

What my question is: I monitor my 24/7 boxen with my WinXP 24/7 Q6600 using FAHmon. When I finally figured out how to look at the fahlog.txt it said my notfred boxen was #1. I have always been told to have different #'s for each of my boxen and my Q6600 is already #1. Do I have a problem or what and if I do how do I cure it? (simply change the quad) :confused:

OBTW Great post on how to set up notfred CD. It helped me immensely. ;)

I think what your asking can be answers by this:

FAHMon goes by name on the network. Notfreds uses the MAC addy to generate a name, so you should not have a conflict.

Phew.. :rolleyes:

Thanks for the answer Kendrak, I was kinda' sweating having 2x boxen with, which to us sometimes ignorant computer enthusiasts, as the "taboo" same boxen folding number. :(

You'll have to excuse me sometimes. Up to this experience the only "MAC" I knew was "MAC Donalds". (pun, MAC instead of "Mc")

If you want to maximize the console client's PPD you will need to configure it so that it only receives the bonus Amber WUs worth 1.5x-2x the points of regular WUs. You have to avoid receiving the Gromacs units. So far, so good, though.

Interesting, I may have to switch my main rig over to standard clients. Never could get VMs running well with Vista 64 and I don't really want dual SMP running so it only gets 2-3k per day depending on the luck of the draw. 4 standard clients could be a decent boost in performance. Thanks for your testing and updates Evil.

Very interesting results.....surprising to say the least....

Thanks for the results Evil...

Well I switched my PC over at lunch, managed to pull 4 amber units. If estimated PPD is anything like what I'll actually be getting I'll have to switch back. One client is at 460ppd, the other three hover around 265ppd. All are project 4555.

This is the luck of the draw kind of thing.
Some WU are great .. while others are really bad ....

I have two amber units now that are horriable PPD ....

Day Two - Part Two - Dedicated Rig
Client 1 -169.18
Client 2 -1064.51
Client 3 -168.90
Client 4 -1060.03
Total= 2461 PPD

As you can see, the two WU are Amber units that are not good for PPD.
Will post other boxen in a few hours

Evil, Which projects are the Amber WUs?

Thanks APOLLO. I get confused with all of the switches as to which ones work best for which computer. Anyway, I appreciate it.

Well Day 3 ... and well .. bad news ..

What started off great ... slooooowed down ..

Each boxen got a amber unit ....

Took each boxen to 500 PPD total .....

If Amber units were not a factor .. and I have gotten all gromacs ... it would be 4000+ PPD ..

It almost is a contradiction. My WU's per day have more then doubled - but the points show a 75%+ drop ...

I know VJ has mentioned a point adjustment in the past, and now I see what he means.

From a work completed perspective ... it was awesome.
But the points, were not there to support it ....

I believe there are other Amber units that see a very low PPD, but those aren't the bonus units. You need to have -advmethods and small packets configured in your clients. The bonus WUs all begin with project number 45xx. Anything else like a project 44xx or 3xxx are not the bonus units, and if your console clients are still receiving Gromacs WUs, you don't have the optimum setup and won't always receive bonus WUs..

Here's my client.cfg file for comparison:

asknet=no
bigpackets=no
machineid=2
local=26

[http]
active=no
host=localhost
port=8080
usereg=no

[core]
priority=0
cpuusage=100
disableassembly=no
ignoredeadlines=no

[power]
battery=no

[clienttype]
memory=256
type=3

so does telling it I have 2GB of RAM tell them to send me large WU even if I have that switch set to no? Is the optimum memory I should put 256MB? And what is "type=3" Thanks!

I had one boxen configured exactly as you listed, and those Amber units gave around 600PPD ... give or take

Most of the Gromacs core ... gave around 900-1100 ...
Those gave the most PPD ....

The bonus Ambers are nice .. but were not PPD kings ..

I've had -advmethods enabled for the last day and a half, and the box hasn't gotten over 1600ppd combined yet. I'm usualy around 300-400 ppd per client and have run nothing but the bonus amber units, so if you do want to go the quad single client route you will need to avoid the amber units when possible to max ppd. I think I'll switch back to the SMP client shortly.

According to Stanford the bonus Amber units are supposed to provide the best PPD for the standard client, but the experience in this thread seems to indicate otherwise. :confused:

type=3 says you have the advanced method flag set.
type=0 says you dont have the flag set.
type=1 & type=2 are probably for timeless & beta work units. Dont set it to either one as timeless work-units are no more and unless you are part of the beta testing team, Stanford will get no feedback when work-units crash.

Packet size is related to the upload size of the work unit, so the amount of memory FAH can use makes no difference as to which work-unit you get.
The only real time that the memory size comes into play is if your running the SMP client.
The SMP client normally need ~400 meg of memory but some work-units need double that.

Luck ........... :D

Thanks Tigerbiten. So if I'm building a folding only box, what is the amount of memory I should put into it to maximize results if I'm putting a Quad Core CPU into it?

type=0 advmethods off, timeless=no-pref (different than no)

For a dedicated box, 2 GB is enough ;)

thanks. I guess I was hoping for 1GB:D
I have a 1GB system working on 3 SMP clients and it's doing fine, but this is a dedicated box and running Win XP. You can get away with 1GB RAM, just have the bare minimum installed and disable any unnecessary processes.

I was actually considering Linux for this dedicated box but I know having 4 cores consumes a lot more memory. Or if I feel lazy I'll put W2k on there since I have a legit copy not being used anymore. Any suggestions about OS? OS vs memory needs?

Don't install Win 2000 on a quad core. I doubt it will support it properly if at all. For MS products, install XP or later for better compatibility. Linux is probably your best bet for a low resource environment.

I agree with this statement 100%. Pick your flavor....Ubuntu, Suse...whatever, but regardless, I think you'll find your production will be better using *nix... my Ubuntu boxen out perform my Windows boxen....

If you need help, there are several of us here that use Linux, we'll be glad to help out...

+1 to this. My Ubuntu box is a lean folding machine. I sure wish 64 bit vista could keep up....and to think I paid a lot of money for vista and got Ubuntu for free!

Since it's a dedicated box, notfred's Folding CD or USB stick options are as easy as it gets. Plus, you won't even need a hard drive.

Thanks for the info all. Any suggestions on a low cost, stable motherboard that will OC well too? I have lots of hard drives, so that isn't a problem. In fact I am getting a few together to send to http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1303071 help support this program. (ok, shameless plug:D)
All I need is the CPU (getting Q9300), Memory, and MoBo. Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

Abit IP35-E iof you can find them... usually around 59... good oc'r... everyone I have hits 400mhz easy

Thanks Sunin! That is perfect. I'm actually glad to hear Abit is still putting out a good board. They have always been good to me over the years, but after all the problems they have had I was going to look towards Asus or Gigabyte or maybe MSI. But a proven product is what I'm after. Thanks much.

I use the 2x2GB either Adata for 80 something or Corsair XMS... I try to get the tightest timings which is the tiesto version of adata at 4.4.4.12

Any suggestions on memory? What are you using with that board?

I'm very very partial to Mushkin memory. Their range of sets is awesome for every need and custom service is top notch. All my boxens run Mushkin exclusively : 2x HP2-6400 2x1GB sets, 2x HP2-6400 2x2GB sets and 1x XP2-8000 Redlines 2x2GB set.

Thanks guys. So with the Q9300 it has a FSB of 1333mhz. Does that mean I need 1333mhz memory or does the quad pumped Intel make it 333mhz? I've always used AMD since the Pentium first came along and now I need to make sure I understand it right. This is what happens when you don't pay much attention for 3-4 years!

You got it right, it's 333 MHz quad pumped so at stock, you need DDR2-667 but with the rock bottom prices of DDR2, there is no reason to not puck some DDR2-800 sets for some overclocking headroom ;)
