Read on another forum that Western Digital has a loyalty program...

What you do is call up their customer service and give them an old WD HD serial number, you don't have to send your old one back! then you pick from the list they have... here are some examples/prices...

IDE:
40GB = $39US
80GB = $40US
250GB = $65US
320GB = $97US
SATA
320GB = $89US
400GB = $143US
36GB raptor = $82

They have no SATA2 yet, but the prices are still very good! Prices include UPS Ground Shipping, 3yr Warranty.

i was first going to reply, saying that they are likely refurbs, but with a 3-yr warrant... not bad!
 
Crap! I just threw out a dozen or so 27gb WD disks :( I could go for a few of those 320s... or a Raptor or two...

Edit: Just called them. They don't have the 74 or 150 under this program, and while they do have 320 REs, they don't have 400 REs. Poo.

ARGH! And here I just paid $120 each for 8 of them! I've got about 6 or 7 drives laying around I could have read serials off of :(
 
Don't touch those Raptor 36GBs, they're crap. I'm sure all the n00bs on the forum would love to get some and RAID-0 them thinking they'll have a decent setup. You won't.

How could you possibly say a 10k rpm sata harddrive with a massive warranty is crap? In raid 0, yeah... maybe a little silly, but the 36gb Raptors are still excellent OS/Application drives if space isn't a concern. Sure, the 74gb is probably more practical for most (enthusiasts-) systems... but certainly several scenarios exist where a speedy 36gb main drive, at much less the premium of SCSI, would be a good thing.

Anyhow... wish I would have known about this program earlier. I picked up two of those 320's a couple months ago and I have at least a dozen WD HDDs laying around, could have saved some money.

It's an awesome program regardless of whats available... I wish more companies would do similar deals.
 
anyone know the model numbers on the 320GB and 400GB SATA drives?

- No set date. It's not a sale but an ongoing customer loyalty program. WD can terminate it at any time, however its been in operation for quite a while now

The 36 is slower than the 2500ks, and more expensive per GB. And if you were to only use say the first 100 GB of the 2500, you'd get better seek times out of it.

I get that, and I don't want to turn this thread into one of 'those' threads. However, it still has it's place. Why waste the space? What if the extra money isn't worth it, since you are talking a ~15gb space need but need performance at a low cost (limiting scsi controlers)? There is of course a better warranty as well.

I am certainly no 36gb raptor f-anboy, but it still has a place and has had a great place up until only recently.

woot i have a pile of old WD hard drives....Im goin for a Terabyte now! I always knew keeping all those old Hard Drives would come in handy
 
just FYI for those skeptics out there.

Does the drive have to be a current drive or will any drive work?

(I have a bunch of retired 3gig WD drives in the basement)

Anyone have a full list of available drives or is it just what is posted on the first page?

You need one old drive for each new one. I imagine most of us to have at least a couple WD drives laying around.

Thanks for the tip, Mokster! I just ordered (4) 400gb drives for my new RAID setup and saved ~$150.
 
Worst case scenario:
You order one drive at a time. Once a drive arrives, you call and order another using its serial.
Unless WD doesn't allow those serials(I doubt it).

Heh, I didn't notice that. I'll make sure to use my old 200GB drives with expired warranties to order mine.
 
I love WD. First they let me pick up a dozen 160s on After-Thanksgiving day for $30 a pop, and now I have a dozen serials on drives' whose warranty expired last year. Winnnnnar.

would any of the above posters with "a bunch of 2gb drives" be willing to give me a few serial codes? i only have 1 wd drive unfortunetly.

I've got a couple drives I can part with the S/N. Gonna keep one for myself in case I get the $$$ to do the upgrade.

Any idea if its ALL drives because I have some that were pulled from Compaq's and maybe HP or Gateway.
