Weird shutdown problem with fairly new PC..

Built a PC for my brother just about a year ago. It's been running great.

He moved back to town. Upon his return to town, he set it back up. System won't stay running for more than 20 minutes. He loads it up, starts using it, and within 20 minutes (without warning) it just shuts off.

I thought perhaps some connections came loose. So I disconnected then reconnected/reseated everything to make sure all was good. Still has the same problem.

Any thoughts as to what I should look at?

The heatsink on the cpu probably got loose in the move, and now it is overheating. Take it off, clean and repaste it, then reseat and you should be good to go.

Nope.. Didn't work. It did need to be resecured, however.. after cleaning and re-applying, and then resecuring; still turns off within a half hour or so.

What else can be checked?

What are the temps in the machine?

Oddly enough, since last night, problem has stopped. It's been on since yesterday afternoon and has yet to turn off. Performance is back to normal also (it was running sluggish).

Bizarre. I'll see what the temps are.

Everything points to heat...weird.

the sluggishness should be the auto throttle
and the shutoff was protective.

but yeah, posting full system specs would be great.
if it fixed itself and you did not do anything, it might just come back at the worst time. should try find the source of the problem
