i would buy them if they were the price of the raptor X but sod spending 300 bux on a 300gb drive lol, if it was 20,000rpm or some crazy shit then i would but not just for a revamped 10k rpm.

Too bad those 10k and 15k SCSI and SAS drives everyone likes to mention get smoked in single user benchmarks. Get it through your head, they are server drives, for server workloads. And server workloads are not the same thing as you running a half dozen apps and calling it "heavy mutlitasking".
Eugene at SR put it best, comparing 15k server drives to high performance desktop drives is like comparing a semi truck to a sports car.

I wonder if you could take off the Icepak heatsink and make it fit into my drive bays. I know there would be an inch of space, but would the SATA and power hookups match?

I know what you mean. I can hear my 4x80GB Raptor RAID 0 array from across the room, makes me feel powerful! :p It's gonna be sad to see them go but I intend to get two of these new drives to replace them.

I wonder if the VelociRaptors will fit in one of these:

It's already been said that the IcePak makes them not line up with pretty much all hotswap bays and such... and removing it voids the warranty on the drive. So no, won't fit in anything save a standard 3.5" bay.
 
I'll probably grab one.

Since the tray is the size of a 3.5" drive, It'll fit right in with my current DiskTwin silencer... Perfect.

I'll just wait for them to hit 250$.

$300 for 300GB for speed you wont even really notice gaming or doing general tasks hrmmm. Does it come with someone to make me breakfast in the morning after WD sticks it in my ass?

While I agree that it's too much for me to bite, I think that SR's review shows it has much to like:
  1. fastest single user drive
  2. Fastest SATA drive
  3. Closing in on Cheetah multi-user performance
  4. Uses less power than most (all?) other drives
  5. Runs very cool
  6. Is very quiet

Aside from 1 and 2, I don't think any of the others were true of any of the past Raptors (ever).

If it's as quiet as it seems, and it were 1/3 less, I'd be all over it. I'd probably be tempted even at 230-250.

Good golly there's a lot of h8 starting to come on in this thread. If you can't afford it, DON'T FRIGGIN BUY IT. But quit clogging this thread by bitching n moaning about the price. This is not a "Is it worth it" thread. Take that ish elsewhere - and I'm sure you will. This is what a lot of us have been waiting for. SSD is just too much for me still, but this is within easy reach - and a solid step up in performance from anything in it's class right now.

I'd swear that SR's benchmarks showed that it was somewhere between 20 and 50% (I think closer to the lower number) faster with games.

Nobody is more surprised than I am at just how good this drive appears to be, in every possible way, except for the price.
 
Looks like an hd to consider for the next build. Curious how well it performs in games.

Kinda strange removing it voids the warranty since WD plans to sell the drive without the IcePak for the enterprise market.
However, unless there is a seal or something, just put it back in the heatsink if you need warranty service. ;)

It doesn't fair well against the SSD. However they are using $4000 worth of SSD's, and their read and write speeds almost don't scale at all. Still can't top that 0.1ms access time. :)

Yea not really fair to compare a $4000 product to a $300 one. Especially with SSD in its infancy. The VR tends to do really well for transfer rates, the SSD really only has the major edge on the access time.

PS: Anyone want a VelociRaptor wallpaper I just threw together for the heck of it? (lame photoshop skills to the max :D)

What on earth is up with all of the complaining?

These drives are presumably the fastest mechanical consumer level drives you can buy. They tear up the benchies, don't suck alot of juice, and won't force you to sell plasma to purchase them.

I am sitting here wondering what in the hell has happened to the enthusiast crowd.

I will be all over these for a nice raid setup, that presumably will cost me 1/5th what SSD will.

Sounds like a winner to me.

Isnt the purpose of a forum to discuss what you do and dont like about a product and even discuss your experiences with the product?!?!

Since none of us other than kyle actually have one to play with all the rest of us can do is speculate - id much rather hear people say hey im gonna buy 2 when they come out or damn its too expensive because we just wont know what we really think about them until each person that wants one gets one

rather than read a bunch of people saying man this is bad ass im gonna get 40 of them and put them in a raid 655360 through my external drive enclosure that they really wont fit in and increase my game load times 3 seconds but it sux they are so hot and so loud

because yeah that means they actually read the review
 
a lot of people are forgetting something important that was mentioned in the StorageReview review...

yes, i am cynical. when its 100% done, then post review, and lets see how it compares.

2 x WD1500ADFD Raptors will be faster in something that is STR dependent like copying large files or most synthetic. 1 x VelociRaptor will be faster at other tasks such as application and game loading times.
 
ok, sorry if this is a dumb question, but would one see a noticeable difference with two of these in raid 0 vs the two 150gb raptors in raid 0 I already have?
