WD Red drives?

Well, they advertise the "3D Active Balance plus" on the reds, which I guess tries to reduce/eliminate vibration rather than resist it like enterprise drives.

Their "3D Active Balance Plus" is the addition of a few more servo wedges and better logic in the servo and data stream processor.

Not quite as good as RAFF, but for a NAS with many drives, it's a definite plus.
 
These are definitely not WD Green drives for the simple reason that they have 1TB platters.

Yeah, but unfortunately it is as much marketing and product positioning as anything else. The accelerometers and added servo processor in RAFF as well as more advanced platters (additional servo wedges) probably add $10 to the build cost.
 
I posted here on September 10th. that I had 3 out of 4 drives fail.
I haven't received any replacement drives back from WD.
Is anyone else who might of RMA their drives still waiting?

Wow, I heard they're having stocking issues but that seems a bit ridiculous. Did you check with your vendor to see if they can help?

I called them yesterday to complain because you can buy them now just about anywhere.
They asked me to call back this coming Monday.
Just a minute ago I received to emails from WD stating the my drive had just been registered, what's odd is that the serial # listed isn't mine.
So, maybe their pre-registering the drive before shipping it out.
I have no idea what their doing though.
 
Just to let you know, Toshiba 2 and 3tb drives are listed as new arrivals but currently backordered at
a popular website.
It starts with an "n", No not that one the other one.

I just received my rma replacement drives today, their new not refubs.
So as usual I went to register them and found out the WD had already registered them but with only
a warranty until February 8,2013. That's only 5 months from original purchase date.
I had just bought these drives on September 9th.
I really gave it to their phone rep, kinda feel bad about now.

I am not sure what the legal standpoint on this is.

One view is you should have the original warranty intact still from purchase.
The other is since you no longer have the original item they can stick their replacement warranty on instead which I guess is 3-4 months based on the date you posted.

Not sure which is right legally.
 
No matter how this turns out, I'm done with Western Digital.
They don't deserve our business if that's the way they treat you.

were the drives cooled? seems common for people to not put the effort into cooling their drives as they do for gpus and cpus/=.
 
whats making me angry at WD is feature locking drives.

I can understand why raptor os a seperate product (or at least before ssd's came down in price).
But seperating red/green/black/blue is over complicating the market, especially when TLER is locked on or off meaning cant just buy one drive, use it in a raid for a year then switch it to a desktop, well you can but it wont be optimal for both, only one or the other. TLER should be available for all drives adjustable by a tool. Green drives probably should be scrapped, I tested my 2TB green on a meter whilst it does save power the saving is a pinnance. But things like agressive drive parking are likely to make the drive less reliable, the first thing I did on my green is used a tool to set the max possible setting for the parking.

Heat wasn't an issue, these drives failed extended smart tests.
I'm constantly monitoring temps in my 4U chassis.

I spoke with a rep on the phone last night and he didn't have an answer as to why.
The line I called was for rma status checks, not very helpful.
I got an email today stating that the reason both of my red's have only a 5-month warranty
is because they haven't checked the 2 defective drive as of yet.

The first drive I got an rma # for was received at their Mississauga, Ontario location (I'm in Canada) on September 11/12, I'm sure that this rma is back in California long ago.

So I replied to WD that my responsibility ends after they sign for and receive the package.
So we'll see how this play out, I'm sure I'll have to phone them again because it' been the only way I get anywhere with them.
 
I was planning on replacing one of my failed Sammy HD204UI disks with a 2TB red but the replys are very mixed here. Wonder whether i should just get the HGST 7k3000 (5k3000 out of stock) for the same price.

Warranty around here is done by the pc store i buy them from so that wont be an issue.

RMA support is not the best with Hitachi. I was a die hard fan until I had to RMA my first set of 2 year old drives. They have you go through a pretty damn good job of packing the hard drive to send it to them or it won't be accepted, they then turn around and ship you a bare drive only supported by the clamshell in a box. Let's not forget NOT having the option to cross ship, so I was out for 3.5 weeks, and not providing tracking when the RMA is in return.
 
After losing patience with the fluctuating price and stock from Amazon, I got five 2TBs from wdstorageworks for $124 w/ free s&h. One died after a few hours, but the rest have been great so far.

I just picked up 2x2tb 7K3000 disks, but that's putting money into WD hands aswell.
So it's a hit and miss.
Got an email from WD yesterday asking for proof of delivery and the tracking numbers.
This seems pretty shady to me as I'm sure they have the 2 defected drives I sent them
or they wouldn't have sent me the 2 replacement drives in the first place.
Lucky for me I keep all documentation regarding computers.
 
Recently I had a problem where Seagate said they only received one drive out of a 2 HDDs RMA (I sent both in one packet). After a few mail exchanges they found the other drive.

Just snagged 6x3TB red's to replace the 6x2TB green's in my movie NAS, updating now, going to take awhile but these red's seem nice and I got them on sale here in Canada for $159.99 ea at NCIX.

I wanted to experiment with the RED drives, but I already had so many greens, that I built my new RAIDz2 array around greens instead.

Seems to work well though.

As a forum yes it has, even if some threads live on after 30 years. But to get big files quickly, there is nothing better. That's how I got the US presidential debates in HD for example, since they're not on any TV channel here.

edit : do you use ECC on your ESXi box ?

I was going to, but it turns out that 8GB unbuffered ECC sticks either don't exist or are made of unobtanium.

Board only has 4 slots, and I needed 32GB of ram, so I passed on the ECC.

There are mixed opinions on whether ECC is ever really necessary in non production environments.
