Hello,
I recently got a D-link DIR-655 router and am running a wired connection to my PC. Every time I shut down, the PC turns back on in a couple of seconds. When I either (a) disconnect the Ethernet cable, (b) connect the cable to another router, (c) connect the cable directly to the modem, or (d) do a hard shut down, I don't have this problem (PC stays off).

Here is my setup:
Asus P5GD2 Premium motherboard (Socket 775)
P4 3.2GHz Prescott
Windows XP Pro SP2

I am using the PCIEx GbE LAN. In the BIOS, here are the relevant items that I have enabled/disabled:

PCIEX GbE LAN: Enabled
LAN Option ROM: Disabled
Onboard PCI GbE LAN: Disabled
Onboard WIFI Controller: Disabled
Power On By External Modem: Disabled
Power On By PCI Devices: Disabled

How do I disable this feature on my mobo? Is this is a mobo issue? (I'll later try to disable the feature on the router, but I want my mobo to be secure.)

I read this when you first posted and I didn't know the solution then and still don't. :)

What happens when you connect to the other onboard NIC and disable this one?
 
Go into the BIOS and turn off Wake On Lan. If that doesn't work then there is something else going on.
 
There is no specific "Wake on LAN" option in the BIOS. Only those that I listed (Power on by modem, by PCI device).

I think I fixed the problem, but was wondering if you guys could help me understand. In my Marvell GbE properties, I highlight "Client for Microsoft Networks," then click "Configure."

The following window pops up:

Under "Wake Up Capabilities," the option for "Magic Packet and Pattern Match" was selected. I know the Magic Packet is the Wake on LAN option, but I chose the "Magic Packet" only option. Now I don't have any more immediate power-ons of my PC.

There must be some pattern (?) that is output by the D-link router.

My final questions:
1. What is this pattern match option?
2. Is this something that just can't be disabled by the BIOS? In other words, even if all of the wake up features are turned off there, the PC (or Windows?) can still be woken up by some weird signal from router? Is this signal sent at all times (so that the PC accepts the signal as it is shutting down)?

I've been into that NIC properties tab before.........and slowly backed away. :D

I still don't have any answers for ya but I'm glad you got it fixed,

PS. I would have set it to "none".
 
Looks to me like the pattern for pattern matching is set by the OS and communicated to the router. The magic packet contains your MAC address 16 times in a row. On your power management tab you should uncheck the box that allows this device to bring the computer out of standby.
