vSphere 5 is going GA right now. If you go look you may be able to download it. If not wait a couple hours as they update things.
 
Sweet time to get my home lab up and running again.Been waiting on setting my new box up for 5.
 
anyone know where to download vsphere 5 CLI? can not find on their download page
 
Going over the documentation now...there's a lot too like, some of the things I noticed are the panes of information are bit different providing more information like in the Cluster summary you can view all datastores, just seems more fine-tuned, and gives you more control.etc....and of course the other things like Datastore Heartbeating, etc.

Can't wait to set up the lab this weekend.
 
Grabbing it now... See if I can get the lab upgraded before I leave. The RTM build wasn't what actually RTM'd. ;)
 
my Supermicro X8SIL arrives today and I already have the Xeon x3440 and 32 GB ram. Perfect Timing!

If I install vSphere 5 on the new host tonight, will I be able to vMotion from the old 4.1 host using the existing vCenter or should I install new vCenter and add the old host to it first?
 
Well..you need a vCenter 5 server. So either upgrade existing or build new one first.

New VC, add old host.

Also: VC Linux version (SUSE 11) should be out as well as VDR 2.0 and SRM5 (which is a total, 100% ground-up rewrite).

The iSCSI configuration has changed significantly, please follow the new guide vs trying the old steps, and OpenFiler isn't as reliable now (especially IET - SCST works great). GUI based though!

FCoE Software adapter is also available if you have a 10G card.

Separate vmkernel log files! (YAY).
 
Can't wait to try this out tonight. I only have a single host though, no fancy lab like most of you guys. :)
 
Thanks, hopefully I don't have to stay late today if we can get all our east coast DR clients ready for the hurricane. Do you recommend the new linux vCenter or windows based?
 
How about vCloud Director and vShield..are there 60 day evals for those products as well?

It depends on what you're doing.

For a generic lab / ROBO / SMB with limited licensing, the VCVA is perfectly fine. IF you're an enterprise level setup, it may not be the best choice.

Limits: You can't install composer or UM or SRM on it, so you have to have separate server(s) for any of those.
You can't install 3rd party apps on it (so any additional plugin that installs "on" vc, no joy - unless it can run on another server as ewll).
It's a memory / resource hog. 2vCPU, 8GB of ram.
It's a database hog - oracle or embedded only. No MSSQL, so no easy migration path (unless this changed last minute)

Benefits: Deploy. Done. :)

Also, try the new web client. It's the future!

Yes. Note: for vCloud, you do ~not~ configure vShield Manager more than just giving it an IP. vCloud handles the rest. If you want to use vShield normally, AND cloud, IIRC, most people use two VSMs - one for normal use, one for cloud, but I could be wrong - I'm just finally learning cloud.

GAG ME. It had better be like nothing I've ever used before, and having to manage from an browser window is just about as awful as it gets. I understand the benefits, but a fat client will always be my primary choice... it will ALWAYS be better. I've never seen a single web application beat a fat client at its own game, ever. Maybe you guys are just that desperate to stop relying on any Microsoft's products -- you best be careful :).

I'll be honest- I agree with you 100%, but it's a VERY solid first step. Obviously, the web client isn't going to be the ONLY way for some time yet, but take a look - it's honestly ~not~ bad at all, especially for a first release.

That's what I was afraid of, kinda buzzed past the warning about the "patch/driver". Luckily I found a post on mounting the VMFS during install of 4.1.

on a wierd unrelated note, I think I just stepped out of the delorean....
 
Am I missing something on the HCL related to drivers. They pulled support for the 3ware 9650ML, is this caused by 3rd party lag.

On a similar note, is it possible to modify the 4.1 driver to work with 5.0?
 
Really stupid question #1: where do I find the cd key for the free 5.0 release? It clearly shows my 4.1 key, but I can't seem to find the place to generate a new key for 5.0.

#2: Where is the download for the free version? All the links I've found so far are for 5.0 Standard.

Sorry for the dumb questions. :p

There was the same problem with some of the Adaptec controllers during the 4.0 release, they will catch up eventually. Though the 9650ML is really old, perhaps they will just drop it, who knows.
 
They aren't doing 5.0 keys yet. I'm hearing next week but not sure. It should default to eval mode.
 
Any guides on making a bootable usb drive. Extracted the ISO, things seem to have changed quite a bit.

Also on same boat. my 3ware 9690SA is not recognized during installation (it did on 4.1U1). Trying to use my raid volume as secondary storage for VMs. I emailed LSI support regarding EXSi 5.0 and received a respond back below

Please review the below knowledge base article providing all operating systems supported with LSI 3Ware and MegaRAID controllers. Unfortunately there is not currently information regarding support for EXSi 5.0 as well as not future dates for support.

I should have a perc 5/i here by the early next week to replace the card. Kinda sucks they would drop the card after essentially mainlining the card in 4.1 U1.
 
Woot got it installed and it now sees my realtek nic on my motherboard. So what are the chances of it of supporting soft-raid
 
I just installed 5 on a Gigabyte 880GMA-USB3 with a 1090T and 16gb of ram. Onboard sata controller and realtec nic detected :).

However, no IOMMU since the chipset does not support it. Still a good board for those who do not need pass through.

Update:
Also have it working on a ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3 with a x4 965 and 8gb of ecc memory.

Full IOMMU support! Passing through (onboard sb850 and lsi 9240 8i controller).

I'm not wanting to install from USB key, I'm wanting to make the USB drive to boot.

I usually prep all our usb keys before they are needed so all I have to do is plug in the drive and boot her up.

Here is the instructions for ESXi 4.1

I'm still using my good intel ones but hey there are some possibilities now.

You just do an install and point it to the USB drive as the target..or am I missing something? ESXi 4.1 and 5 install just fine on to a 4GB USB drive..that's what I do in my lab.
 
4.1 installed fine on a 1GB as well, I have ready people say not to use less than 2GB but I don't know why.
