video card for around $50

I would shamefully reccomend a 6200TC, but that's pci-e. In this case, the new egg seach function is your friend. Just go to the videocard section, and type in your price. Find a few items post a few of your choices here, and we'll tell you what's the best.

I have used a Nvidia GeForce MX4000 128mb and Its a great card for $50. Got mine off of newegg, but they dont sell it anymore. I just looked and they lowered down to like $35, wow. I got the Gigabyte version BTW.

Something along the lines of a Ti4600 should go for around that much, definitely if you find it on the FS/FT board here, or ebay or something. Its a good card overall. Had it for a while. Plays every game that came out pre-2004 that I tried on it at max detail. Newer games like Doom3, Farcry, and HL2, though it'll only play on low or medium detail, with low resolution, if you want bearable framerates.

All the brand new cards at $50 are not that good in my opinion. Like RavenD said, I would also look on FS/FT boards or ebay for deals on older high end cards such as ATI's 9700 Pro, which is a DX9 part.

IF its not for gaming, then why does he need to upgrade hsi current card? Perhaps if you tell us exactly what your dad will be doing on this computer, people will be better able to assist you in finding the right card.

It's funny how all of you jump to conclusions that everyone here is playing BF2/Doom 3/HL2. Just because they need a video card doesn't mean squat unless otherwise mentioned.

because im upgrading his computer and he wants a new video card. he wants something better then his 3 or 4 year old 32mb card. im putting in a new motherboard/cpu/ram . whats the point of keeping a old video card around if i can do a upgrade for about $50 with some newer tech?

the FX5200 128mb is $45-$50 and a huge upgrade over any 32mb card.

i still use mine and it will run all games out now on low res/quality just fine.

do NOT buy any MX card, they are horrible. they do not support pixel shaders wich more and more games must have to even run now. i have a MX440 and it was the biggest waste of money i have ever spent on a video card. eq2 and gta:sa i belive are some of that games that will not work on any MX card because they require pixel shading, i am sure there are many more.

the card i have been most happy with is my geforce 3 wich i have used for a very long time and got more than my moneys worth out of. newer games have been unplayable on it for about a year now and ill be replacing it soon but for what i got out of it it was worth every penny.

Gets about 30k in Aquamark. A 5200 gets about 9k. The newer version is 300% faster than the old card. And, the 7200 is going to be released next week. That should push the price ofthe 6200 down.

I have that exact Asus card in my Dell at work. I just wanted to add a DVI port for my 19" flat panel. Anyway it does 2474 in 3dMark2003 and 8214 in 3dMark2001, not too bad for a 3.06Ghz stock (slow) Dell, with 845 chipset (not dual channel memory). Its about twice as fast as the craptastic mx420 that was in there before.

I like that it has PureVideo support, I downloaded some of those HD WMV clips from MS and got only about 40% CPU usage. Also, it has no fan which keeps my office quiet, though it doesn't OC too well - but what do you expect. Also, you can't unlock the pipes (to 6600) on these, as they aren't there! Its the newer core with just 2 pipes.
