Vega Rumors

The latest news does make me wonder how this is going to fit into the iMac Pro coming out in December (supposedly). The thermal envelope is going to be very interesting with a Vega + an 18c/36t Xeon in there... :wtf:

They'll probably downclock the hell out of it.

I'm expecting the actual RX Vega reviews after the NDA finally lifts will be polarizing considering all this pre-launch marketing AMD has been doing. They clearly want us to look at their product from a very different angle. We'll get the chance to sort out those tech media sites/youtubers who have the integrity to tell it like it is and those who will just tell you what AMD want's them to tell you. Of course, there will also be those who try to play safe and try to have a bit of both.

That is the problem with social media, its going to be run by the masses, the masses of sheep. And why AMD changed their approach to marketing.

Ya'll seem to forget, Vega is supposed to be AMD's finest wine.

You are supposed to enjoy it three years from now after the drivers have aged, and play 7+ year old games.

"Ha those Nvididiots who payed 700+ for a 1080ti, my Vega can play Doom at 4K@100Hz+" Random Dude Aug 2020

All joking aside I want to buy one just to put on display, that brushed aluminum looks sexy.

It's a performance video card, there is only one real angle, and that's performance.

If it could beat a 1080Ti, no one would really care about power. If it could beat a Titan Xp, no one would really bitch about a $1k price.

Since it's now a middle-of-the-road card, or maybe a bit higher, they have to compete on something other than raw performance. So their marketing team will push for ANY angle to make their cards look good. They'll talk up Freesync, they'll push "minimum frame rate in DX12 titles", or anything else they can.

If they had the raw performance, they'd just post numbers.

Take these with a grain of salt but might be good news:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/11680...-vega-64-399-rx-vega-56-launching-in-august/3
"Speaking of Fiji, there’s been some question over whether the already shipping Vega FE cards had AMD’s Draw Steam Binning Rasterizer enabled, which is one of the Vega architecture’s new features. The short answer is that no, the DSBR is not enabled in Vega FE’s current drivers"

http://www.anandtech.com/show/11682/amd-releases-radeon-pro-software-crimson-relive-edition-vega
"The rest of ReLive Edition for Vega Pro builds on Radeon Pro Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.6, which was Radeon Vega Frontier Edition’s inaugural driver. This includes full functionality of Radeon Pro Software “Driver Options,” where the user can ‘swap’ between Radeon Pro Software and select Radeon Software versions without a reboot. Previously in ReLive Edition 17.6, swapping was limited to switching UIs"

So game mode really didn't do anything after all and one of the major features has been turned off. We probably wont know how much a difference for sure before Aug 14th but it seems like the FE numbers were on the low end of what we'll end up with.

If Vega "trades blows" with GTX 1080, and the 980Ti trades blows with the 1080 when overclocked (because yes you can gain over 30% vs reference) then we have the hilarious situation where the card that was competing with Fiji is now comfortably competing with its successor, and drawing similar amounts of power.

unknown.png

My 980ti barely gets to 1440/6800. Would love to see it get to 1500/8000. This is like benchmarking a 5.2ghz 7700k and claiming that's representative of the average product out there

Seems that at least some Bethesda games are going to use FP16 since it is what the PS4 uses. Translator needed warning.
https://www.golem.de/news/id-software-wolfenstein-2-unterstuetzt-fp16-und-vulkan-1707-129201.html

FP16 as a Radeon bonus

New in the version of id Tech 6 developed for Wolfenstein 2 - The New Colossus are FP16 calculations. These are done with half precision, which leads to a higher image rate with some shaders without affecting the graphics quality visibly negatively. For what exactly id software on FP16 instead of FP32 put, AMD did not. Post-processing effects, such as Bloom. The performance should rise in the double-digit percentage range, id Software did not want to comment on this.

The use of FP16 does not come as a surprise: just a few weeks ago, Billy Khan , Lead Engine Programmer at id Software, said that the next id-tech-6 iteration would be based on half-precision shaders. Apart from the Radeon RX Vega, the Playstation 4 Pro also benefits from this because its graphic unit uses the Vega architecture in parts. Why Wolfenstein 2 - The New Colossus next to Vulkan additionally uses Direct3D 12, we can only guess - perhaps due to Microsoft's Xbox One (X).

One thing that troubles me as a person that likes to "push things to the limit" is that it seems that there is a bios security check in VEGA FE. I assume that it is in consumer VEGA since it makes no sense to make a different chip right? I hope it is disabled as I like to tinker with my hardware as it's more fun than gaming. Think this might be some DRM bull crap for Netflix or something if enabled on consumer VEGA? I hope that I am worrying about nothing. ;)

Yeah, its probably more for drive encryption on the SSG parts and things like that. They certainly wont do themselves any favors by locking out modders.

Wow, so AMD's driver team is so incompetent and retarded they actually included a switch that does NOTHING into a release build?

Seriously, their entire QA team should be fired, so does the project manager.

If this DSBR feature being enabled turns this card into a beast then their marketing and PR team need firing. Why wouldn't you wait less than a week to launch a card when a critical new feature isn't enabled

It wasn't nothing per se but it didn't bump up gaming performance like everyone thought it should have. Definitely could have been messaged better

It would cool if they have been executing some brilliant plan to sandbag to the max and catch NV off foot but I'm not holding my breath.

I suspect that AMD basically faced the prospect of being unable to match their words that Vega would be coming out 1H 2017 and the decision was made to pop out FE in order to be able to abide by that deadline.

We also asked AMD’s architects, including Mike Mantor, about whether DSBR was actually disabled in Vega: Frontier Edition or whether it was just a rumor. The architects loosely confirmed that tile-based rasterization was in fact disabled for Frontier Edition’s launch, which we think mostly aligns with statements about pushing the card out in time, and noted that DSBR will be enabled on both Vega FE and RX Vega on launch of RX Vega. We asked about expected performance or power consumption improvements, but were not given any specifics at this time. Wait for launch on that, though – we’ll get that information.

DSBR is already enabled in AMD's presentation, AMD tested their games with 17.30 driver. they had DSBR enabled in 17.20 driver, which is the driver before it. The final driver will be released along side RX Vega samples to reviewers.

All intel systems for testing as well, though in the lans they're using ryzen systems.

The bundle gives $100 coupon of Ryzen 7 & motherboard combo, $200 off Samsung CF791 FreeSync monitor, and two games (Wolfenstein II & Prey)

Why does the two games have to be Wolfenstein II and Prey? What if you like neither of them?

They just recently signed a partnership with Bethesda

You haven't had options since the last Never Settle Bundle which was 3+ years ago.
They pick some games to bundle, you get those games, end of story.

Vega bundles makes no sense (for the buyers).

You might as well buy a Geforce GTX 1080 and buy whichever games you want.

Vega is literally a fail in every way. I don't see anyone can rationally buy Vega unless he/she already have FreeSync monitors that he/she likes.

FAIL #1
Pricing Vega the same as Pascal.

Even assuming that Vega is as fast as its Pascal competitors out-of-box, Vega consumes a lot more power and have little headroom for overclocking. Basically, you end up with more heat, more noise, little overclocking headroom, and higher electricity bill (not to mention maybe having to buy a more powerful power supply).

Even if you can save $300 by buying a FreeSync monitor instead of G-Sync monitor, you are now choosing to lock yourself into an uncompetitive ecosystem and there's no telling whether AMD can become competitive when it releases Navi or its successor. Furthermore, by the time AMD becomes competitive, you might be shopping for a new monitor regardless.

Some might argue that with refined drivers, Vega might be faster than Pascal, 2-3 years down the road, but by that time, you would likely be looking to upgrade to a new video card anyway.

FAIL #2
Releasing Vega bundles that makes no sense.

AMD should have given the option of choose a couple of games from a list of 10-20 different games.

What if you want a different FreeSync monitor? Or what if you already have a FreeSync monitor?

Coupon for Ryzen 7 & motherboard combo only applies to combo with a select few motherboards (ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero, AsRock Fatal1ty X370 Professional Gaming, Gigabyte GA-AX370 Gaming K7, and MSI X370 XPower Gaming Titanium I).

Those are the most expensive motherboards for Ryzen. One could simply save $100 by choosing a cheaper motherboard. Furthermore, all of these motherboards are X370 motherboards which means they are SLI capable, but Vega is not SLI capable, so what is the point?

I have never cared about power draw. What power user does? When I ran Nvidia cards I OC'd them completely out of every specification that was possible and maintain stability. I do the same to AMD cards. I flash the bios on video cards so that I can run them further out of spec. I have roasted the memory on video cards running them out of spec and ordered a new one the next day. I do not give a darn about power draw. I have a complete custom water loop to fix all of those issues. I used to OC the PCIE lanes on my older systems until things didn't want to boot. Back it off a tad and you're good to go. If there was a place near me that sold LN2 I would do that too. I honestly do not care about power draw. If it doesn't trip the breaker it's good to go! This is a hobby and not a religion.

I'm going to get the games regardless. If I am still breathing when they are released, they will be in my game library. Again why is this a punishment from AMD for packaging games with the special edition video card? They partnered with Bethesda right? I don't see the evil in their relationship.

I already stated that I was only interested in the monitor if it was at least 40" because I use a 50" Samsung 4K TV currently. :) Everything smaller is puny and sh*t to me. Hulk smash!

FreeSync monitors work just fine with Nvidia video cards. The XBOX One X will have FreeSync support right out of the box so it will have a use for those that do more than just PC game. How is that "locking" myself into an ecosystem? Again I'm not really caring about the monitor.

If I were to buy a new motherboard it would be the baddest Asus Crosshair motherboard that I could find. I'm not impressed with my current AsRock motherboard. Since I bought this I will stick with it for the time being until there is a complete Ryzen refresh. Then I will determine the next CPU (Intel or AMD) that I want to purchase. To be honest if AMD had announced ThreadRipper when Ryzen first came out I would own one of those. I'm not going to "do over" with a new purchase so close to the last one. Now if I could sell it to my buddy with a good conscious...

I think you are picking an odd point to take a stand on. GPU game bundles are common and you rarely ever get to pivk which games you get with the bundle.

That's true, but usually, the included games are free gifts and you don't have to pay for them in a bundle price.

You still haven't addresses my other points.

For example, why would you buy a graphic card that has higher power consumption and little room for overclocking over a graphic card that has lower power consumption and more room for overclocking when both costs about the same?

I disagree on power draw. If you tell me I can get 20% more performance for 100% more power draw, I'll take it. If you tell me "here's two cards with roughly similar performance and price, but one draws 100W more than the other", I'm going to take the lower power draw card.

I don't care about power draw IF there's performance reason for it...if it's power draw for the sake of power draw, with no performance advantage, why deal with the extra heat?

read the fine print. All test were done on fe but on another driver. FE does have DSBR enabled but I think only in pro apps. Its not enabled for gaming yet in any public driver. We will find out on launch. So far its a cluster fuck of information.

AMD is dragging things out as long as possible so they don't need to answer for their bad performance.

And where were all the supposed "surprises" from the event? The biggest surprise was AMD really did launch their card with a bunch of smoke and mirrors. And also that they found another way to push the date back...

If you look closely at the slides for freesync, they list the resolution and the game for the freesync fps. That should give us a clue as to performance.

Sadly, I don't think AMD is dragging it out due to bad performance, no, its related to production or software, drivers, the DSBR etc. Bad performance or not, AMD does not make money when products are withheld.

Still better to wait a few weeks and go it right if that's what they are doing.

Historically they launch a card with a severe issue, fix it a few weeks later, but it's already known to be a shit card because of x issue. Hopefully they are avoiding that. That would be ok.

AMD said that Radeon RX Vega 64 would "trade blows with Geforce GTX 1080" and, of cause, this coming from AMD means that this is the optimistic scenario.

Radeon Vega Frontier Edition literally performs about half way between Geforce GTX 1070 and Geforce GTX 1080
