Well this sucks. This is the condition of my Crucial M4 shipped via USPS. Clearly it was intercepted somewhere along the way, opened and completely gutted. Fucker even had the cheek to place a flat rate envelope inside the original delivery box knowing I'd have to ship it back (if I can that is). Or the seller could have done that in the first place. Hopefully eBay buyer protection covers this, or I'm out $345......

EDIT: I am now convinced it was the seller =/

LOL

I'm sorry, but the first thing to do in a case like this, is to laugh. It's the American way :D. On the other side, I would definitely make it my life's goal to get that person fired or find the individual that did such a thing. One of the reasons I don't do the eBay thing. Don't trust anyone and lack of insurance on the product.

I feel sorry for you man, don't know what to say. I was going to make a joke about, "Haha guess you got to test out that 1,500 G Shock protection", but you don't even have the damn internals. That's just.......wrong.

Only bought my current SSD last week without a hitch! Bah. Only joined last month too lol

WoW, never seen anything like that.
Sure it happened in transit?

The box arrived sloppily sealed like it had been opened. I doubt the package would have been accepted for transit in the first place like that. Anyway, waiting for the seller respond, otherwise its buyer protection time....anyone ever used that before?

I take it was a 512GB drive by the price.
I'm surprised USPS shipped it like that or atleast have marked the package that it was damage like that.

Wait a min..the pcb is missing? Get your money back ,dood. No way that happened in transit. One does not simply open a random USPS box..rip into an ssd, take the guts out of it,then put it back together.

It is unlikely that USPS would open a box in hopes of finding a SSD. And then have the tools to remove the internals.

Some people use old boxes they have laying around. I wouldnt dismiss the possibility.

Well, I was tracking it. was in a usps warehouse for a couple of days. May have occurred there. Ill know if it was the seller if there is no response. giving him till Friday to say something.

Not really sure but if one intercepted it and did that would have taken a lot of time. Need a screwdriver. Versus just taking out and sticking in pocket before they walk out. I would lean seller.

Trust me it did not happen at a USPS facility. I have worked as a consultant for them and have seen many of there facilities. Your package may get beat up and if you try to put something heavy in an letter it may get ripped up in the sorter, but NO ONE except a postal inspector would open a package. And postal inspectors are basically like FBI agents, they are not screwing around.

Also a grunt employee would most likely not risk being charge in federal court to screw around opening some random package.

Now had it been shipped via UPS or Fedex guess what, your package does not afford any of the security of the federal laws. So something to think about.

Looks like I was ripped off. Just Googled the sellers real name taken from her Paypal account (same address too), looks like she was arrested in June for theft.

wondering if I should publish her name here..... probably not, don't want [H] to get into any trouble.

Fuckety fuck fuck.

I knew a guy that bought a 540mb wd hdd from best buy back in the day.. I was there when he opened the seal and inside was a dead maxtor and an old porn video. It was his xmas present too. Hope protection covers it for you. I don't know why they would take the time to just send the shells. Wonder who repackaged it or if it was a ploy to throw you off and blame usps. Does the inside package have a stamp?

One word....FEDEX, never use USPS for something of value.

Read my post why your package is most likely safer with USPS. Also note that you can insure to a much higher value with USPS than you than with another carrier.

Nope the inside doesn't. I think it was the seller.

OK, how much positve feedback did this seller have.... link to the seller?

I'm curious.

Her rating was 100% before I gave her one even though she had some negatives back in 2010. Looked like she had a decent track record for selling electronics. Should have been more careful & avoided her on my part I suppose. Oh well, live and learn.

I noticed 1 thing on the item listing.

Package was not sealed from factory which indicates that it was open, but she didn't take pictures of the item. So IMO she did it, not USPS.

I've launched a case, but i'm still in two minds. The flat-rate box was opened from the long side instead of the open latch front face. Who knows. Lets see if eBay or the seller come through. Just re-checked the drive case again to make sure I wasn't seeing or not seeing things.

where does it say that? I have her original posting, just says new condition and lists the ebay definition of new. unless I'm completely blind :/

If someone from USPS did this, why would they go through the trouble of removing the PCB from the case? Why not just take the entire drive? Also, I don't think it's likely that a USPS employee (or any random person, for that matter) would open your package, know it was an SSD, and have the tool(s) on hand necessary to disassemble the drive and remove the internals.

It doesn't. I'm just looking at the picture.

This line

This is brand new sealed factory box.Free shipping 48 US States

So either seller did not deliver or it was damaged in transit, either way open case with eBay and USPS. Call and email every day until you have $ back in hand.

I assume you payed by Paypal? If so you should be OK as long as you open a case right away, which it sounds like you did. Paypal does not make the funds available to the seller right away for just this very type of thing. You might have to wait a bit, a week or so, but they will get you your money back.

I had an issue with a seller a few years back and it was a little bit of a pain but I eventually got back everything I paid to the seller. Good luck!

If a package is damaged/opened during transit, USPS will place it into a specially marked packaging and give you a note stating it was damaged. It's happened to me a few times, thankfully never ruining the product.

The only times I've ever had issues with USPS (which I use for my eBay) is when I hand printed labels. When I went to paying for labels with Paypal and getting a printed label, I have had zero issues.

I've opened a case, but apparently I have to wait till Nov 9th to allow the seller to "resolve" it, if not then I can elevate it to customer service. Wondering if I can do it before then. I want my money back back sooner =/

Unfortunately you need to let them go through all the steps. I've had to open disputes in the past and it takes several weeks to resolve regardless of the outcome. Just be thankful this is not from china. If it is from china, I am sorry in advance.

several weeks? aww man.

Just an FYI - on that type of packaging there isn't shrink wrap (necessarily). I deploy them somewhat regularly (Crucial M4 512g) and they come with just a very sticky piece of tape where the serial number is on the packaging. It will damage the box opening the tape. There will also be damage to the other side of the box from similar tape if the drive was originally part of a kit (drive + adapter or 'transfer' kit). It's exceedingly difficult to tell on her picture if the tape is damaged, though at first glace it doesn't seem to be. Is it the same package as in her pictures?

Obviously she could snap pics first and open it later. Sorry about the mess!

I'd lay any money USPS had nothing to do with this, just based on my years of dealing with online scammers and thwarting all but the first a decade ago.

While not impossible and there have been cases, postal employees are extremely unlikely to break into packages for the simple reason its a federal crime hanging over their heads. Risk to reward just isn't there. Also, postal employees aren't psychic, so the chances someone magically knew your box happened to have gold in it, in the form of that rare 512GB species of SSD's, is extremely unlikely. Unless the ebay item# was on the box somewhere, but even then its unlikely since they aren't sitting around looking up ebay item #'s all day waiting to hit gold.

Looking at everything here, this is a rookie scammer, plain and simple. Probably in their 20's. They knew enough to send SOMETHING, anything, because the tracking# and record of package being received make the dispute process 10x harder for the buyer since its what Paypal/eBay look at first. Otherwise it'd be a slam dunk dispute. But pro scammers don't use USPS, because its playing with fire as it risks federal mail fraud prosecution. They use UPS/FedEx/bingbang shipper since theyre private companies where boxes do get stolen from warehouses and trucks by employees. Also, removing the PCB = rookie move by a scammer that thinks they're clever but lacks the foresight and presence of mind to see their crime from all angles. Because to try to imply a postal employee or third party interceptor nicely removed the PCB and then closed the shell back up is like someone stealing a car stereo but first ejecting the CD and leaving it on your seat then putting the wires back nice and neat. Doesn't happen.

Its excellent you took photos on arrival, that will help if you pursue a mail fraud/theft investigation or file a police report. There are a few ways to escalate this and take this seller apart, but I would absolutely put the blocks to this whore. Besides the Paypal & eBay disputes you've already opened (open at BOTH sites if you havent'), I would also sniff out the seller and see how cooperative or receptive they are to the idea of a mail fraud and police investigations. I wouldn't have left that negative feedback so fast, just played dumb like you believed their story, and see if they were willing to provide info for both police and mail fraud investigations you were pursuing which needed the sender's information, so they could be contacted by these agencies. I've had scammers crap their pants and shaken refunds loose doing no more than that. But its their answers to those questions that give you the insight how to move forward.

If no response to your questions from seller = full steam ahead and call this number: U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General: 1-888-877-7644. M-F, 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Wow. Alot of useful information. Thanks odditory! I'll open the USPS mail case too. I tried opening with paypal too, but it said they already had a case open for me via ebay. Yeah, I do regret the early feedback, but i'd rather noone else get scammed by her (and I was vexed and not seeing clearly). Do you think its worth sending another message saying I've reported mail fraud etc? The main problem is she wont reply at all! If I'd only left my last bid out. arrrg
