Upgrading my lappy!!

Hi all.

I got a new laptop by HP seen here and it's got everything I wanted except the faster processor. I figured I could upgrade my processor when I wanted to and save money doing it this way. It's got a mainstream gpu w/ 512mb dedicated memory, 320gb between the two satas, tv tuner with blu-ray, webcam w/ mic and even HDMI out. It also has expansion 3 which I have no idea what it's for. Here is what you would see if you went to HP or related type to get a customized. From what the site says, I should be able to throw in a T8300 (2.4GHz) at 800MHz FSB and it should work fine even with current BIOS I assume. The current is a T5450 (1.67GHz) at 667MHz. At the HP site, the lowest processor is a 667MHz T5550 (1.8GHz). My thought is that for this particular model, they won't specially use a different motherboard for this T5550 or T5450 like I have. I think they just threw in the process and it was forced down to 667MHz.

What do you think?

You might be limited by bios or even a soldered on chip.

You do know that switching the CPU will be more difficult than just pulling the old one out and popping a new one in?

I'm not sure the CPU is soldered in. It really depends on the design of the laptop. I pulled a cpu out of an older HP 17" model without too much trouble at all.

The bios might limit you, but I doubt they have multiple bioses for identical boards. My guess you would be 90% likely to be able to swap out the CPU assuming you can get to it.

I agree with kirbyrj. I had a turion acer laptop and I peaked at the processor on that guy. It doesn't seem like they would solder it on. As for the bios, I might be able to look up information about it.

Heres the link for the drivers for my laptop and it shows a catch-all bios for all intel-based computers. So the bios wouldn't limit it right?
