Hey so for the holiday season I was thinking of upgrading my video card.

I've got a Sapphire Radeon HD 5670

(PCI Express 2.0 x 16, DDR 5)
This card fits well in my system (size wise).
I've got a mid tower so space is pretty limited...
I have a 600 W power supply...
Use an AMD Phenom II X4 955
I play games like COD: Black Ops, BFBC2, SC2 and some Mafia 2, haha...
Trying to get best performance out of new games coming out (Assassins Creed Brotherhood, Fable 3, Dead Space 2, Crysis 2....)
I typically run my games at 1680x1050


I was looking at cards such as the 5850 and the 5870.

You just missed a great deal on the MSi GTX 470 for $195. Overclocked to 800 get you GTX 480 performance. I run one on my x4@3.8 and its my smoothest gaming machine.

I would consider a 470. If not, a 5850.

BTW: What brand PSU do you have? If its a lesser unit, 5850 would be a better choice.
 
get a 470 or 6870, whichever is cheaper (or if you can fit a 5870 into that price then definitely do that!!)
 
I was looking into some Nvidia cards but I've always been an ATI guy. It seems that the Nvidia cards are so much cheaper... I've also noticed they seem to perform better with games. Anyone have any thoughts?
Otherwise I'm waiting for a damn good price on a 5850, 5870 or 6870?
 
Nvidia is doing better at the moment overall I just finished an assessment on a 6870 I bought purely to test and assess. Decent card, but can't compete even with MLAA which I really love. Lots of reasons, but short answer, you want a GTX 470 if you can afford it, if not, GTX 460 1gb and OC it. Either one will let you max out or nearly max out almost any game out there at your resolution.
 
Don't get EVGA model with the turbine, the MSI one with the Cyclone cooler is awesome. Galaxy is a brand I really like (they have a rep that posts here on the forum) but the fan on that 460 model is known to be problematic. Between those definitely the MSI.

Edit: There's some 465s in there, avoid those. They came out before the 460, are louder, hotter, and don't OC well. 460 > 465. Strange but reality.

right now the some prices on some of the Nvidia cards ridiculous, def good value. as for performance you just have to keep your eye out for the deals. it seems that Nvidia's price drops were kinda temporary as claimed but you still see some good deals showing up

470GTX trades blows with a 6870. the 470GTX runs much hotter and louder then the 6870 but you may have more OC room (performance wise). it has physx as its main feature (that AMD doesn't have) The 6870 runs much cooler and uses far less power. it doesn't appear to have the OC room the 470 does. but it has MLAA (this is awesome BTW) and CFAA. right now the 6800 are selling like hot cakes esp the 6850 and are actually selling above MSRP. Nvidia is not doing that well and has had to drop the prices down to levels that are making the shareholders pull their hair out. currently they are dead matched in price which gives the 6870 the nod. but if you wait for one of those deals..

another great option is the galaxy 460GTX @810mhz. currently 180AR. nice deal. falls in between a stock 6850 and 6870.

sapphire had a deal going for a while for a 5870 for 243AR. beat both of the above pretty well as its very nearly on par with a 480GTX. its back up to 270AR though unless newegg does another 10% sale :D http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102883

Go for the HD 6850 or GTX 460 1GB, whichever is cheaper at the time of buying. Don't get the HD 6870 or GTX 470 due to your PSU being one of the crap OCZ 600W PSU.

Well the 6870 would still fit in fine power wise....it's just overpriced, so ya:

Get a 6850 or 460 1GB, whichever is cheaper at checkout :)

That OCZ PSU can only do 500W of power under real world conditions. The HD 6870 would be ok but I still wouldn't trust that expensive of a card with a PSU worth not more than $35 these days.

Depends: If you're just gonna go with the HD 6850 or GTX 460 1GB, you should be fine. If you want to go higher than those cards, then yes upgrade your PSU.

This is probably one of the best PSU + GPU combo deals I've seen all month:
$270 - XFX HD-585X-ZAFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB PCI-E Video Card + XFX P1-650X-CAH9 650W PSU Combo

The HD 5850 is on par with the HD 6850 and GTX 460 1GB.
 
HD 5850 hands down. The GTX 460 1GB SE is a gimped version of the GTX 460 1GB and rather overpriced at that.
 
Good thing you came on this forum before making a decision! (Otherwise, you might have fallen for Nvidia's deceptive naming scheme.)

Anyway, if you're comfortable with MIRs, then the Diamond 5850 is probably the best video card deal at the moment. Also, it's a reference card, so you shouldn't have any problems unlocking the voltage and overclocking it -- and the 5850 is an amazing overclocker.

I bought the Diamond .
Those other cards you suggested Valset were all Express 2.1 .
Isn't compat. with my rig.
I'll let you all know how the Diamond plays out.
The reviews made it seem like it's a pretty sweet deal.

PCI-express is backwards compatible, so you would have had no issue running a 2.1 card in your 2.0 rig.
 
^^ What he said. Honestly most boards don't have 2.1 slots anyways.

the price is awesome, and so long as you don't every need customer service there is nothing wrong with diamond either. but if you do....
 
Anyone telling that a 6850 for $155 is a better deal than a 5850 for $135 is clueless.

Not only is the 5850 6% faster, but it also overclocks much better. The only two advantages to the 6850 are a smaller power draw and better tessellation performance. These are certainly not worth sacrificing performance, overclocking headroom, and $20.

and if you think the 20 difference isn't worth it for a better vendor then your clueless. so long as nothing goes wrong with the card he did great. if is the only word a thousand miles long however.
