Upgrade path for old 1800X build

Hey guys, I need some advice on upgrading my htpc

The current specs:

Ssupd Meshlicious Mini-ITX case
AB350 Gaming-ITX/ac mobo
1800X (never overclock)
2 x Crucial BLS8G4D32AESBK 8GB Ballistix Sport LT DDR4
EVGA SuperNOVA 550 GM, 80 Plus Gold 550W SFX PSU
2 x 2TB Samsung SSD + M.2 512gig for OS
evga 1080ti hybrid

Would a 5800x be a decent upgrade, or should I go with a 12700k? The computer is mostly used for gaming 1-2 hours a week when company is over. I haven't kept up with the latest hardware in years, so I have no idea what the most suitable upgrade path would be. My only reason for upgrading is so that I can at least sell the CPU, motherboard, and RAM on ebay and get some money before they start throwing this hardware away at the local library.

My plan is to remove the 1080ti hybrid from the meshlicious and replace it with my main rig 3070, this will free up the space on the front of the case to water cool the CPU with a 280mm all-in-one. I will replace the 3070 with a 6900 XT on my main rig as soon as they hit 600-640 or so.

As for my budget, I am looking to spend about 600-700 on a new mobo, CPU, and RAM. Additionally, I am not planning on overclocking the CPU just going all vanilla

I would not even consider a 12700k, your board allows for a 5800X3D, which will outperform a 12700k. I'd consider upgrading to that chip if you want the absolute best gaming performance. Make sure you update the BIOS of your board and you'll be all set. That should make for an extremely capable gaming rig. The 5800X3D doesn't have much overclocking headroom anyway, so it's perfect for a vanilla setup. I've watch some YouTube videos and the motherboard hardly has any impact on performance.

The 5800x3d runs toasty, so make sure you can cool it properly.

If cooling is an issue, go with a 5600x or 5700x.

I think a 5600x or 5800x3D would be perfect send off to the AM4 setup.

You might need to consider your PS for an upgrade depending on what your GPU decision is.
Also I don't understand the designation of "never overclocked" on the CPU. I mean that is a tactic for selling a used CPU but when you're part listing your rig why? It's not a bragging point. Especially around here.

Thanks for suggestions guys! I bought the 5800X3D for 424.45 and installing the p7.20 beta bios for my mobo to get it ready. Throwing the 1800x+heatsink on ebay for beer money

And yeah, definitely getting a better cooling solution currently I have a dingy JONSBO HP400S Mini CPU low profile heatsink that can barely keep my 1800X cool, Just waiting for a good deal on a AIO water cooling system from Kraken, Corsair, EK, or maybe one of those b-stock EVGAs aio.

Your are gonna want a 240 AIO or better for the 5800X 3D. She is hot and dense despite the low TDP wattage. the 3D was a precursor to what we are seeing with the 7000's chips.

This pretty much nails it in the CPU side of things.

id hold off on GPU upgrades unless youe more concerned with snagging a better deal on an outgoing model than you are having the newest generation. 1080ti is still pretty damn capable at 1080 as well as 1440 resolutions. This machine will also be quite a bit more powerful than your main box once you get the 5800x3d. I would do a trading spaces swap with your 1080ti <> 3070 and pocket the savings for a next Gen upgrade down the road.

I agree. Wait on the GPU if you have a 1080ti. Prices are gonna continue to fall and we know they a surplus now....

1080ti uses more power than a 3070. So, that swap should be good.

But, I would be careful about anything more power hungry than that. Especially if its an Nvidia card. As their transient spikes tend to be larger than AMD's.

I took everyone's advice and will wait until Black Friday to upgrade the GPU. The issue with the 1080ti is that I have an open Thermaltake P90 case on my main rig and would have to 3D print some adapters to put the radiator up on top since I don't have any other place for it. Not to mention I promise one of my nephews he can have the 1080ti hybrid so I rather he takes it.

The new parts (bought the Kraken x63 for 48.00 like new condition via Amazon warehouse); looks brand new when opened. Amazon deals generally work out well for me hopefully there's nothing wrong with it

Anyway, I'll be doing the upgrade on Thursday when I have more time

The 5800X3D and a 6900XT are a great combo. Been running them together since the 3D came out and couldn't be happier with it. Smashes everything I throw at it except MSFS in VR but that's more of a shit DX11 engine issue.

Ditto. I run them in my mITX HTPC and my only complaint is cooling the 5800x3d. I'm running the Kraken X63 as well and it get's into the 80's under stress testing. Used to hit 90 easily with a 240MM evga cooler. Case is a Hyte Revolt 3. Overall I'm pretty happy and the temps aren't of any concern during actual gaming.
