Major Nelson posted a new video that shows off a pretty neat dual-design D-pad on Microsoft’s updated wireless controllers. What do you think? Do you like the dual-design?

seems kind of pricey to me for what you're getting, but I guess we should be used to that with xbox accessories

Not having used one yet I can't say for certain, but it looks like the D-Pad the damn things should have had to begin with. The current D-Pad sucks so just about anything will be an improvement. I am also not a fan of the fact that they've priced it at $64.99 and only with the recharging kit. I've been happy with the good old AA battery swap every once in a blue moon. As I understand it the rechargeable battery packs do not have nearly the longevity of a AA battery. So I can't say I'm pleased with that.

I found that the rechargeable packs for the 360 last much longer when you use the quick charge kit. It's not actually that the play and charge kit damages them as much as the play and charge kit has some crap circuitry that doesn't fully charge the batteries sometimes. not a fan.

accordingly, the fact that they're bundling this new controller with the play and charge kit means i definitely will avoid. the play and charge kit is a piece of crap.

i stick to my ps3 whenever i need a game that uses the d-pad. since most d-pad games tend to be downloadable, and most downloadable games are on both systems, this has worked pretty well for me. sure as heck not paying MS $65 for something they should have done in the first place.

I already have 4 battery packs and all the chargers I need, so I will probably be passing on the new controller until they are available without the charger.

I like the looks and colors (or lack thereof) of the new controller, but for younger or casual gamers I think the lack of colored x,y,a,b buttons could be an issue. I don't know how many times I've told younger family members what button to press, by saying hit the red button.

Between this and the price hike for XBL, M$ can go fuck themselves.

Agreed.

Fuck your xbl and fuck your new stupid ass controller. It took you years to come up with something that's been suggested to you from the start?

Do I have to pay an extra $10 a year for it? (I know they said the price)

Also I'd like to note if anyone is playing a rhythm game they usually give you the colors instead of the letter... (who does this I don't know)

I'd like improved battery life and maybe multi-system registration.

While we are at it, lets add to the pot that profiles have a minimum life off of live? I bought a game, played it went to a friends house with my HD, (it forced a console update no problem with that) and went to play the game with my profile only to find everything was in trial mode because I wasn't currently connected to live. Heck give me like a few days or a week at least from my last sign on before you say its invalid!

Neat twisting and all, but is the D-Pad actually improved as far as accuracy? I'd rather have a perfect D-pad than a morphing one that seems more prone to break down due to the moving parts.

Pretty damn pricey for a controller. The patent for the new d-pad is kinda cool but not for the huge price hike.

There is no price hike. It is the same price as the current controller plus play & charge kits.

Yeah, I learned the buttons by color initially. Though I'd probably be OK now.

Scared to give me a wired version.

Despite the high price of the wireless controller vs. the wired, even my cheap bastard friends by the wireless models. Wireless is so much better when its a good option. Besides I'd need at least a 10 foot extension to reach my couch if I used the wired one.

I never liked the 360 controller because of the offset analog thumb sticks.

I do prefer the Playstation controllers in general, but the XBOX 360 controller is fine once you get used to it. Well that is except for the D-pad. The current one really does blow.

Those must not be cheap, cheap bastard friends.

The wired controllers have always been better because they perform the same, and are much cheaper, and save on batteries.
Win win win.

It doesn't matter for me though.
I have a S controller adapter for the 360 (and PS3/PS2,) and the S controller already has a perfect dpad.

I bought both Super Street Fighter games on the PS3 simply because the 360's d-pad is so horrible. If this were available 2 years ago they'd have gotten an additional $110 out of me.

Super Street Fighter HD Remix is pretty cheap...even when it came out

Err...I was thinking of that one plus both SF4 games. For that matter, Tekken 6 as well.
Pretty much any fighting game needs a good d-pad.

That's exactly why I have the Xbox S controller adapter.
(but I do buy all my fighting games for PS3 for the same reason as you, cause the last thing I want is people complaining when they lose)

$64 dollars? Where the hell are the parents and kids getting the money for this shit?

WOW .....

Most people want a wired version so they can use it with their PC's without having to buy the extra crap the wireless version needs with the PC.

Screw that. The Logitech Cordless RumblePad 2 is a better controller as far as I am concerned and its wireless. They aren't but $39.99 as I recall. I think the wireless receiver for the XBOX 360 controller is some $19.99 or so. For that price its worth it to be rid of the wires.

1. Buy new controller
2. Sell existing controller(s)
3. Sell play and charge kit
4. ?

5. Profit

Not everyone likes the play and charge kits. Sounds like a price increase to me since you are forced to buy a bundle with no discount savings.

bingo.

I bet the d-pad will still retain that "mushy" feeling. I hate the 360 d-pad with a passion.

Yeah I have a bad feeling they tried to be too fancy with the rotation thing, and quite possibly never resolved the actual problem with the dpad.

I think the biggest problem with the current D-Pad is the fact that it has no travel room at all. So it feels worn out. Plus the texture of it and lack of anything to grip just makes it bad.

People's reaction to this controller make me lol.

1) It's the same price as today's controller / charge kit combo... so they're releasing an upgrading controller at no additional cost.

2) It's taken them five years to come out with a better controller? You're just making up things to bitch about. They already had the best controller. They're just making it better. The original controller wasn't faulty, this one is just better. Again, they're not pricing it higher than the old controller.

IMO, it's nice. I'll buy one when they come out with some sort of special edition paint job. I hate it when people "accidentally" borrow my controller at LANs.

One more thing: People bitching about the price hike for XBL: Boo-effing-hoo. It's going from $3.33/mo to $5/mo. The family plan's price still isn't going up, it's launching at the same $99/year as before the announcement. Do you people come from Ethiopia? Afraid you aren't going to be able to biggie size that value meal? They're adding new features left and right and they already completely destroy their closest competitor, (Sony's online experience is garbage compared to XBL). They're bringing their own custom integration for Hulu (Plus), delightful Netflix streaming, ESPN3 (for those who care about such things), video chat, last.fm, facebook, twitter, which altogether are worth about $1/mo to me... the real deal is that XBL kicks ass for gaming, and easily makes the remaining $4/mo worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy to pay more, I'm just saying it's not the end of the world. Read the comments on Joystiq. People are *freaking out.* It must be a bunch of kids afraid their parents are going to cut off their XBL subscription b/c of the price increase. >.>

Damn I'm slow. I had to watch the clip where he turns the D pad over and over to see what the hell he was doing

I agree with the above poster, they could have just not released it and people still would play 360.

Very cool for a company to do this IMO.

Also the controller looks sick!

Um... LOL?

Fix one item (D-Pad, which arguably needed fixing) and totally farked up another.

Removing the colors from the buttons when every damned game out there uses color coding to help identify the buttons.

Brilliant!

Then wait until they start selling them without the play & charge kit. Supposedly the controllers for the new slim use an improved 16-way d-pad, so that could also be an option.

The same place they got the money before when they were the same price? Or they could just buy the old controllers.

I agree with you pretty much 100% (Netflix, ESPN3 & Hulu Plus interest me more than Twitter/Facebook/Last.FM).

Netflix and Hulu Plus are their own pay-to-access services. Why is it considered a great feature that you can now to pay to use XBL Gold to access Netflix and Hulu that you are also paying for? There are plenty of Blue Ray players and media players that can already access Netflix for $0 a month.

Total opposite here. The PS controller is the most awkward thing I've ever held, thanks to a combination of smaller size and pararell thumbsticks. Size medium-glove hands here, too.

Yea, PS controllers are very uncomfortable for me

I find the PS controllers a little awkward now too, after having played on the Xbox for so long.

I already have an Xbox and do most of my gaming on it and I don't think you can play games on a bluray or media player (not counting PS3s or gaming HTPCs).

Easy, say you are from N'aleans and take whatever you can get, including leisure time bullshit accesories... but wait, if you order now you can get two of them for just a small extra handling charge. We can't do this all day, so hurry and spend money you don't have to order my crap.
