I have narrowed down my choices for a new 23" to the Dell U2311H or the NEC EA231WMI. I see that the Dell is currently on sale. I would like to hear from those that have these monitors and get your opinions, good, bad or indifferent on them. Anyone else with info about these I would be interested in hearing from you as well. Thanks for the input.

I can't speak for the NEC, but I do have a new U2311H. I have zero complaints - but I'm not overly picky with the exception of ghosting. There's no QC issues - backlight bleed is extremely minimal, luminance seems even, no tinting issues, and no dead/stuck pixels, etc.

I use it primarily for gaming, and there's no noticeable motion blur - actually a tad bit less than the 5ms TN panel that it's replacing. The NEC is a little slower and touchy in terms of responsiveness (slighter movements will have some minor trails). If you're using a very fast TN panel now, you may notice some ghosting...but otherwise, I highly doubt that you will on either panel. Though the U2311H probably the best IPS panel out there for gaming in terms of responsiveness in this price range.

In short - you'll probably be damn happy with either. You would be crazy to pass up the U2311H for $240 in my opinion.

I recently purchased the EA231WMI and then returned it. While it was a great monitor as far as PQ goes I found the response time was too slow for me when gaming. I'd say whether or not you should buy it depends on how much you plan to game on it (and I suppose what type of games as well). But the price of the U2311H is pretty hard to argue with at the moment. I ordered one yesterday and hope the faster response time will work out better for me. If you search on youtube for the EA231WMI you should come across ElektroDragon's video showing a comparison between it and the U2311H in Crysis. To my eyes the U2311H is less blurry during instances of fast movement in the video but for some people the difference may be imperceptible.

I have to say that this is nonsense. Both usew the same EXACT panel and honestly, NEC has much better QC. I have 3 of these in surround setup and they are perfect in every way. No lag and no ghosting. The NECs are great panels and NECs customer service BLOWS Dells away

Yup. You could't pry this NEC away from me if you tried. LOVE it.

Same panel doesn't mean same response time. If you bothered to look at the tech specs for both, you'll see the the NEC one has slower response times. A quote from TFT Central's review of the U2311H.

TFT Central said:
The Dell U2311H has a specified 8ms G2G response time indicating the use of Response Time Compensation (RTC) technology to boost grey to grey transitions. This is actually a difference between the U2311H and the NEC EA231WMi in fact. Although both use the same panel module from LG.Display (LM230WF2), Dell have applied an RTC impulse to improve the response time, whereas NEC did not.

As for Dell's customer service.. say what you want about them, but they cover shipping both ways and overnight the replacement to you. Couldn't say the same about NEC.

Great setup BTW. :)

NEC shipped me a panel OVERNIGHT at their cost to fix an issue with a REFURB panel. That is what I call Customer service..

Lets also not forget that I get to speak with an actual American citizen that speaks perfect english becasue, well... they are based in the US

If one has to exchange panels any ways its stupid to get the inferior monitor:rolleyes:

OP read some more Reviews, all which say the NEC is inferior:

NEC is a Japanese company, iirc. They withdrew from Cali a little while ago... I think.

So BETTER OVERALL BETTER PQ and LOWER INPUT LAG is inferior? Just wow...

the NEC has 1.8ms lower input lag, which is impossible for any one to distinguish considering both are under one frame.

No reviewer says the NEC is better.

The Dell has better color presets, a better contrast ratio and is considerably more responsive. Learn to read.

Reading comprehension is not the issue here. Follow the herd like lambs to the slaughter... not me

I know what I see and I know my experiences with BOTH companies.

The NEC is better

I don't own the NEC and don't intend to, since every review of it seems to point out its slow responsiveness (compared to the Dell or HP IPS monitors). But if somone only uses it for text/photography, I guess that won't be a problem.

You make a good point. I concede that the Dell is also a fine choice :)

In all seriousness I dont think you can go wrong with either one..

I notice no ghosting and I play quite a few games. Maybe I am not sensitive to it.

You can't go wrong with either... I have the U2311H and my bro has the EA231WMI... I was set on the NEC, but had to go with the Dell because of the $250 price that I got it at... I received a very good panel and it looks stunningly sharp and pretty much the same as my bro's nec... The only thing it lacks is cable management (which isn't even that bad imo)... The NEC's cable management is way better. Both are great panels, but I'd go for the dell because it is pretty much the same display but cheaper.

I recently returned my U2311H and got an NEC. No way I'm going back. Response time is basically exactly the same and no tinting issues aside from some bad white glow (and I think backlight bleed). But even with those deficiencies I like the NEC's image quality more.

Just a note, the u2311h does have a basic cable management system. While not the most advanced solution it does work. You stick the through the square opening beneath where you raise and lift the monitor. I have everything running through there and you can't see any of the cables from the front when using the monitor, and it still lifts/rotates/pivots without issue/snags.

Its hilarious you're arguing over 1.8ms... Seriously? How about something tangible?

Almost as hilarious as H users saying there is no difference between the response times and image quality.

This is why Review sites are awesome sense most owners really have no idea what they are talking about and love to justify their purchases.
