U.S. Internet Speeds Causing Digital Divide?

Comcast Business 16/2 tier here for $89.95/month. Got business because they were bitching at me for pulling ~500G+ per month and there are no caps on business. Looking forward to upgrading to Docsis 3.0 soon.

Not sure about a divide but I'm jealous of those that have the 20MB cable and FIOS readily available. My options are either DSL or Cable, bottom of the rungs (unless you're a business willing to shell out $$$ for a long-term fiber connection).

Seriously. The fiber is already in place, there's no reason not to have "fiber to the home" services in urban areas.

No kidding. There is a major fiber line running 100 feet from my house but the only thing I can get is dial up.

I feel sorry for you Americans. How is it that the richest country in the world cannot even provide fast broadband at a good price? The competition over in Europe for internet and cell phone users is fierce. Competition equals lower prices. I don't understand how we can have more competition than the country that is built upon competition as the foundation of everything. I hope for your sake (and the sake of my friend who moved to the US) that things change.

BTW I have 100/10mbit pay €32 a month and I pay €7 a month for my Sony Ericsson C510 with free messaging and calls within 3 (the name of the company is "3") and about €0.15 to others per minute or per SMS.

3Mbps/640Kbps

Qwest - 41.99 w/ basic phone package. I'm getting shafted up the ass.

More KC, MO (and areas) on here than I thought. Wish I lived in an area that had Time Warner, though. Would love those speeds for that price.

AT&T DSL
6 down / 768 up
$35ish a month

I'm at a price / speed tier that I can live with. Comcast gets you on price / speed (have to pay $70 to get equivalent, and uptime wasn't near what I'm getting with DSL. I can't go with U-verse without paying a lot more than what I want.

You also need to understand the US is a freaking land mass not even close to your country... Getting fiber into every nook of the country would be VERY expensive.

European towns are very close together. That's part of the reason the vehicles over there are so ridiculously wimpy (Not Germany obviously). Cities here in the US are very spread apart with lots of tiny little sub-cities spread out.

$69.99/month
Hastings, MI

Its either this satellite or dialup, no other options.

I have Time Warner Road Runner Turbo
15Mbit down/768k up
$50/Month I think

Get an education.

- The US is not rich. It's trillions upon trillions of dollars in debt.
- A small/medium size state is the size of an entire European country.
- The US has quite a bit of broadband competition depending on which cities/states you are located.. it's all up to companies if they can keep expanding into rural areas where people probably won't pay for their service.
- Thanks for the 'competition' market lesson. In case you haven't noticed, the US is now turning to be a socialist nation.
- All the US has left is hope and change. It's wearing thin now.

St Augustine Florida

Comcast $52
22 Down
2 Up

And they just upgraded my area to DOCSIS 3.0 So 50down/5up is avail.
Its just a matter of convincing the little lady that $99 a month is worth it for internet:D

Suck it:

NY (Staten Island) Verizon FIOS 50/20 @ $95 a month = kids running around with dirty clothes and no shoes but I gets my pr0n in an instant!

Speed test sites must be busy, I normally get close to max upstream as well.

Located in Ohio
$58/month
Time Warner Cable

Time Warner Cable - South Eastern Wisconsin (milwaukee-ish, pewaukee).

Can be on the fritz with thunderstorms, snowstorms. Useless CS.

Embarq
Stephenville, TX
$25.99/mo
1.5 Mbps down/ 512 Kbps up

Yup, I live out in the boonies... although 3.0/768 would only run $5 more...

damn I feel bad now seeing all you silly people paying for shit speeds... I pay $41 a month and get the max my modem can handle which is about 30/15 (I use a modded modem, so its uncapped.. yes I am a piece of shit)

They listed South Korea, Japan, Seden, Latvia, Portugal, and Liechtenstein.

Well, I looked up each nation on Wikipedia and put their population and area into a spreadsheet. The US has 3,794,006 square miles vs 418,882 square miles for ALL OF THOSE countries combined, or NINE TIMES the area.

All of those countries have a TOTAL population of 198,161,209 vs the US at 307,230,000, or 1 1/2 times the population.

Considering that, the US has done well to get the score it has. I'm not saying it should not be better, but the cost to get broadband to the masses is significantly higher in the US based on area alone.

Come on. Liechtenstein? They have 62 square miles and a population of 35,000!
