Trouble Migrating From an SSD

So I got a 64gb ssd and I am currently using 49/160gb of my normal HD in my computer. I tried "copy disk" in EASUS Partition Master but it told me that my SSD was too small. So I made the 49gb a separate partition, and by using "copy partition" in EASUS, I copied that onto my SSD. Then I used Gparted, moved the starting point 2mb, then moved it again to 1mb, like i read in a bunch of tutorials.

When I booted from the SSD, it simply wouldn't start. It even told me there was no BIOS file when i tried to get into the BIOS. It told me to "insert proper boot device and press a key" over and over, so I put in a windows CD to try and repair the installation, but that didn't work either.

Anyone have an inkling as to what's going on? This is Windows 7 x64.
 
Windows 7 actually requires two partitions.

Can you copy the boot partition with the program you're using?
 
that would be the 100MB reserved partition which I disregarded during the copy, probably....?
 
That might not be the issue, the Windows disc can usually recreate that partition and repair the install.
 
I have a couple instances when I had to initiate a Win 7 repair a second time before the MBR was repaired.

I do not think Win 7 must have that extra partition in general, but if it is created in conjunction with installing Win 7, then that boot partion will need that little one too. I have a dual boot laptop that at one time was a Vista Home Premium/Vista Business dual boot and I upgraded the 2nd partition from Vista Business to Win 7 Ultimate. It did not create that little extra 100mb partition. I think this is because the drive was already partitioned.

On all my HDD to SDD migrations I pre-formatted/partioned the SSD first (always over-provisioning) so I'll try to remember to check a few of them tonight and post back if this is consistent behavior.

Kevin5255 - you probably need that little partition since it was created as part of your initial install.

Oh yeah you can definitely install Windows 7 without that partition, but once an install is created with it I think it always expects it to be there. I installed Win 7 w/o it by just formatting manually and deleting it before the installer procedure exactly for this reason... It simplifies backups and the recovery partition isn't used for much else besides System Restore functions and Bitlocker (which I don't use so I don't need it). I think they're adding more stuff to it in Win8 tho so you might have to learn to live with it eventually.
 
I don't remember if EASEUS Partition Master's copy function is 100% identical to EASEUS Todo Backup's "Clone Disk" function, meaning maybe it doesn't do on-the-fly partition resizing (or maybe they removed it from the freeware version to drive people to the paid products) but I know EASEUS To-do Backup does, so I would clean up that mess by starting over rather than tinkering with individual partitions because there's some complexity there.

Grab EaseUS Todo Backup Workstation trial, select Clone Disk, be sure to tick "Optimize for SSD". There's no reason a source drive with 49GB in use shouldn't clone to a 64GB SSD. If it still complains destination is too small then try removing any excess and temp files you can from source drive and re-attempt.
