Transformers: War for Cybertron

I got it installed at about 3:30AM and played it for an hour. In my opinion this is probably going to exceed Arkham Asylum as the best licensed game of all time.

Wow! Really man? That's saying a lot. It's a great game, don't get me wrong but AA was a fabulous, especially for a comic book nerd like myself.

I really hope High Moon supports the PC version of WFC though. Remove the stupid the 30fps cap and customize key bindings possibly in the next patch.

I don't see how I could enjoy an online competitive game locked at 30fps.

How's the single player? Is it just bot-wars stomping around in UT3 type arenas? Or are there actual levels you go through and it has a real fleshed out single player campaign like Crysis?

Honestly I never even noticed the frame rate was locked. The game played smoothly and quickly. That's about all I knew. Its a fully fleshed out single player game. You move through areas pretty seamlessly but sometimes you end up locked into an area for an arena like fight. However, you endure waves of the enemy and accomplish goals to move to the next area. Most of the time, I didn't even noticed how locked in I really was. The areas are large enough to allow you to feel pretty free to move around.

I'm seeing a consistent trend of most licensed games being cheaper on PC. Weird. What up with that?

I don't know but I like it. It means I can buy games for my PC and not have to pay a bullshit price of $59.99.

It's pretty fun. A gamepad is not required and the kb/m response is fairly good. My only gripe so far is that, like someone else mentioned, the game is locked to 30fps even with vsync off. I played the first chapter with the kb/m, but have gone to using a gamepad so I can just sit back in my chair.

I played both single player campaigns with only a mouse and keyboard. The controls lend themselves toward either mouse+keyboard or gamepads very well. I could have seen being very happy with either in this game.

Do you really think it would be releasing if the movies hadn't happened?

If all of you like it, then maybe I'll give it a shot.

It probably wouldn't. The movies if nothing else sparked a resurgence in the popularity of Transformers. However this game has more in common with the original Transformers series and the Dreamwave comics than anything that's come since. Its an interesting blend of Transformers history, so there may be elements of Armada or Energon in there that I am not aware of, but for the most part it resembles G1 and the Dreamwave comics the most. With that said there are new elements, characters, and takes on existing characters as well.

I'm thinking about getting this. Its alot cheaper for the PC. Anyone got any complaints about using the keyboard+mouse? or is a gamepad needed?

It plays VERY well with keyboard+mouse controls. I played the entire game this way and I played the Escalation game mode with it as well for about an hour today. I found it quite enjoyable and easy to control.

That's because any Transformers movie other than the original animated The Transformers: The Movie is crap.

I couldn't agree more. Fans of that film will find many references to it while playing this game.

I bit the bullet and bought it. It's good that it's getting solid reviews so far. I've got about 10 minutes left on the download. I'm excited about the co-op.

Edit: Well the IGN review for the 360 is up. It got a 9.0.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/110/1100843p1.html

As I said before, there isn't anything ground breaking about the game in any category. However everything it does for the most part is absolutely solid. Its fun, it has a decent story to it, and fun factor is pretty high. I played from about 3PM yesterday afternoon to about 2AM this morning with only an hours break for dinner. I haven't enjoyed a game that much in quite some time.

An Xbox 360 review here, all good stuff. The only thing he gripes about are on the visuals and I would imagine they would be much improved on a PC

http://www.planetxbox360.com/article_10980/Transformers_War_for_Cybertron_Review

I think I may bite at this point...

The visuals are decent on the PC with everything maxed out. They aren't ground breaking by any means and certainly don't approach the levels of some newer titles but they are solid none the less.

As much as I like this game I am going to have to disagree. Batman Arkham Asylum is simply a master piece in almost every way imaginable. This game is good don't get me wrong, but I don't know if I'd put it on that level. This game lacks any type of cerebral elements comparable to those of Batman Arkham Asylum. This is much more of a mindless action game. Its also far more linear than Arkham Asylum is. Though to be fair its hard to compare the two because they are nothing alike. If this game has more staying power for popularity it will be due to the multiplayer. It could be quite popular. Since its based on the Unreal Engine there is a good opportunity for mods, maps and skins. I'd love to see that happen.

Definitely in for this game. Now I just need to decide whether to get it for PC or 360. I might go PC just because of the price difference, but the co-op/multilayer options make me wish I could play it with my friends on XBL so it's a tough choice :p Most of my RL friends are on LIVE but not so much on Steam...

The PC version also has better visuals. Mostly just due to resolution though.

Pretty incredibly high praise here. I have a hard time believing it simply because AA is such a damned good game.

I'm going to pick this up either tomorrow morning after work (if I can stay awake long enough) or Friday.

Just played for about an hour, I like a lot! I'm looking for a way to remove the 30 FPS limit.

Tell me you have played both. Before you make claims.

I played both and both are equally enjoyable, both feel like console ports, but both are solid story wise. And Batman AA is a prime example of why I wish Transformers WFCT was GFWL.

EDIT: I should also point out, only $40, if I had paid $60 for this game I would be sourly singing a different tune. Batman AA, more customization, better graphics and DLC for more replay, much better value.

I haven't made any claims at all past "AA is a damned good game."

I just wasn't expecting the kind of glowing feedback I'm seeing on this game. I'm pleasantly surprised. Being a long time TF fan I see myself picking this up very soon. :)

Batam AA and Transformers WFC are TOTALLY different games but I'd say AA is a deeper game, Transformers is really just a shooter but for $40 this is a solid game and it's fun thus far though I want to remove the damned framerate cap. The game is smooth but it's annoying me than an Unreal game is stuck at 30 FPS.

no way to get by that? like in the configs?

There is a config file, but it's encoded so it's impossible to change with just a text editor. I hope they patch it also.

Dam that sucks. Hopefully they patch it. Might end up getting console copy if that's the case.. although its probably limited too haha. And cost 20$ more :(

Plus this game really is a shooter, keyboard and mouse are the way to play this game.

I just beat the game. I must admit I wasn't really walking in with high expectations for this game, but at the end I was wrong. It is a very good game! End game boss fights were AMAZING!

If you were born in the 1980's and actually owned those metal transformers, this will bring back good memories. Overall, this game is at batman arkham asylum level of childhood memory of animated cartoons. You won't be dissapointed!

Cons:

1.)For some strange reason you cannot rebind the default keyboard commands.
2.)FPS is locked. Very noticable in heavy fire fights. Need the FPS cap removed.
3.) NO FRANK WELKER (Megatron) (Is he dead?)
4.)Easy single player campaign for a keyboard/mouse gamer (I did not play in hard mode because of the fact I play FPS/Shooters alittle different than most people. I don't use WASD key format. I use ESDF format and use Q and W for weapon swapping. Once I can rebind the keys I will update on hardmode.)

Yeah, I was expecting Welker to voice Megatron. I also expected a lot of random "Yes" statements at the end of Megatron's sentences. :p

Forgot I had eyefinity.....lol (2 side monitors been turned off for a week now)

So I tried it out on this game. It will recognize the resolution (with and without bezel compensation), but it is unplayable. Some character textures are messed up, and the FOV sucks. Your character takes up the whole left screen. When in vehicle mode, you can barely see yourself.

so yeah, game is broken for eyefinity. I only played it long enough to take some pics. heres some pics....

Transformer Eyefinity
Transformer Eyefinity 2
Transformer Eyefinity 3

Hmm I just bought it and mine crashes as soon as I started it. Anyone else having problems?

Damn you all. Ive been really trying to hold off on this game because I still have the last missions of Red Dead Redemption to finish, Half way through Splinter Cell Conviction and havent even started Dead space yet...But I grabbed it anyway. I got so much gaming to do and so little time! Besides, I gotta have a good reason for the hardware coming tomorrow (thread about it after its done ;) )

Anyway, I have a question about these pics. They seem pretty dark. Is there a brightness option to play with? I just started downloading it on steam and still have about an hour left before I can play to see what options I have.

Yes you can adjust the brightness. I had to adjust mine quite a bit as it was way too dark by default.

Thinking about getting this game since I loved Transformers G1, but from some of the reviews I've seen for the PC (mostly on steam forums), it seems the game is a direct console port with the issues that have been mentioned here already for the PC.

Then I read this thread, and people are saying that it is good like Batman Arkham Asylum. I got Batman for the PS3, but man.. I don't know what it is, I just couldn't get into it. I'm not much of a console gamer, but this game just seemed so slow paced and boring. I played it for about 30 min, and I don't think it will make it's way back into the system. I sure hope it is nothing like Batman.

yes you can adjust the brightness. im at work atm and i notice how much darker these pics are on the LCDs here..... they look fine on my u2410s. sorry

I think this is an iPhone port judging from those textures.

as i said in my post, eyefinity is messing up the textures. its looks way better with a single screen.

Looks like he's still kicking it and not that old at 64: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Welker

Yes, the 30 FPS frame cap is just laziness in the port, that should take about 10 minutes to change.

Welker supposedly auditioned for Megatron in this game but the developers didn't believe his current voice worked well for what they were doing. Its entirely possible that Welker can't manage to do his original Metatron voice anymore I can't image that was easy on him even back then.

Hehe, I swear I always think of Welker every time I hear Axel Rose scream a song.

Megatron got outsourced.

I believe he's certainly capable given the range of what he can do. Look at his voice work:

"In the 1980s, Welker voiced many recurring characters in the Transformers animated series. He voiced several Decepticons, including Megatron, Soundwave, Skywarp, Mixmaster, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, and Ratbat. He also did voicework as the Autobots Mirage, Trailbreaker, and Sludge. With the release of the Transformers animated film in 1986, he took on the role of the Autobot Wheelie and afterwards, took over the role of Galvatron from Leonard Nimoy. Having already provided the screams for Nimoy's character Mr. Spock in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, this marked the second time he had inherited a role from Nimoy.

Welker also returned to two of his most famous Transformers roles when he portrayed Megatron and Soundwave as part of a spoof in the third season episode of Robot Chicken, aired shortly after the release of the live action film. In Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen, he reprises the roles of Soundwave and Ravage, and also provides voices for Grindor, Devastator, and Reedman.

It has recently been revealed that Welker had been cast for Transformers: Prime."

Actually he did do the same voice again in the Robot Chicken episode. While it did sound slightly different, it was pretty damned close. His Sound Wave was almost the same as it was originally though. Your voice does change a bit as you get older, you can even hear it in Peter Cullen's voice work from the 80's compared to now. It may also have sounded different during auditioning given that they heard the voice live vs. recorded. I don't know about that part but the recording equipment could have something to do with it. I'm pretty sure that the voices were digitally altered even back then to some degree and the method they used for it may be vastly different than what they do now.

But if you look at his credits there are some interesting roles:

Here are some of the more interesting ones:

  • # Batman: The Animated Series (Isis the cat, werewolf sound effects, henchman, demon)
  • # Batman Beyond (Ace the Bathound, various animals and mutants)

He even does animals and odd creatures. So I'm pretty sure he's capable. Not sure why Frank Welker didn't get the part, but my money says its for reasons that have nothing to do with his voice work.

I didn't care for Megatron's voice in the game but I really hated Starscreams. It was just annoying. I much preferred the voice of Chris Latta (AKA, Starscream in the original series, and Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe.) Unfortunately he died a few years ago.

I know all about Welker's work, but thanks. Its just been a pretty popular theory that his voice can't handle it lately which is why he doesn't do it much anymore. As for Starscream. Yeah I just finished the first chapter and I'm not fond of it. Its not terrible, but I would have really liked if they got Micheal Dobson as he did a good job in Armada. Sam Riegel (dude doing the voice for the game) is a good VA, but he just don't seem to get Starscream. As for Megatron, James Remar was such a weird choice and I really don't like it. Its not so bad that it pulls me out of the game, but its enough to bug me when he speaks.

I don't really recall any slow moments to be honest. If moving from point A to point B in the Asylum I can understand. But overall, the game guided you to where you had to go. Also the fact it was pretty much Batman the animated series the video game :) They got pretty much the same actors so it made the game even more enjoyable.

Transformers War for Cybertron is basically a run and gun game. You see guys kill them and don't forget to get ammo! Megatron is OP and needs a nerf.

I swear to god that can't be the case! I saw this youtube video of Welker saying "DIE AUTOBOTS" (at the end of the clip). It is pretty close to the original Megatron.
