I could see Gina Carano, but I don't think you could pass Ronda Rousey off as an English lady. Looking at photos of Camilla Luddington I can't see her in the role either. She actually is English and she looks it, but she looks too frail to me. And of course, it's not enough to find the perfect girl for the role, she has to be willing to sign the contract and do the part. I am thinking many of these women are looking at movie and these days, big series type work, not a computer game.

The irony is that is probably why they selected her. The further irony is that probably less than 2 years after release, she will look more like Lara in that department.
 
I would think there are some Jessica Biel types in England or that could pass as English. She pulls off a convincing tough girl.

IMDB lists Biel as currently filming Shock and Awe, perhaps she was already booked.
 
Get an athletic and attractive woman who can passably deliver some lines. Someone like that actress from Portal: No Escape. She's probably older than they want for a young Lara, but that's the build and look they should get.

It's Tomb Raider for gods sake. We don't need Meryl Streep to deliver emotional powerhouse performances.
 
yeah.. 2017 "PC era" Lara Croft... barely a 5, i would give it a pass if not drunk, unbelievable.
 
I noticed. OSHA made me to wear them for high work too.
Doesn't change the fact that, to me, she is a poor choice for Lara.
 
I fought full contact karate (kick boxing) back in the 1980's and I can tell you it is nearly impossible for "any" woman to beat a physically fit man (particularly a man with some training) in a fight. It is totally make-pretend for any woman in any movie to be kicking men's ass. It's just a movie...

During this time I dated a ballerina and I have much respect for them as athletes. Even though Viklander is a tiny, slender, woman as a trained ballerina she is (or was) closer to a real life Laura Croft than almost any Hollywood actress. The photograph suggests she is doing some/most/all of her own stunts.

She might not be voluptuously sexy but she is "very" cute... I'll rent the video when it hits Amazon Prime...

Carano is full capable of breaking your nose in one hit. She also tends to hold her weight around 140lbs, which is bit more than Viklander. That said, she could take the normal skinny 160-200lb untrained guy, but not too many 180lb+ trained guys.
 
Lara Croft is supposed to be an oddity, not your average looking everyday girl who happens to do some sports.

I just looked up Carano. Way better then any of the others. Muscle, pretty, and 5'8".
 
I think the actress should just look as much like the game character as possible and I felt Angelina Jolie was the closest so far. But then again now that I think about it the latest Lara Croft really doesn't look a ton like all the previous ones and maybe this actress is a better fit.

Since when is Lara Croft about hand to hand combat with 250lb linebackers.

Her primary activities seem more climbing/acrobat related.

Check out some of the top female rock climbers. They are light and thin. Carano would be obviously thicker and heavier than rock climbers.

The nose is a weak point and is easily broken. Even a moderate tap on the nose is liable to momentarily disorient an opponent.

Weight class is important. A 140 pound man is going to have more muscle mass and upper body strength than a 140 pound woman. I would bet upon an athletic 150 pound guy, who is not a sissy-boy, against Carano every time and I am sure I would win 8-9 out of 10 times. A trained 140 pound guy would have Carano at a tremendous disadvantage.

For those reasons a hypothetical "real" Laura Croft would not be looking for an hand-to-hand fights. She would be relying on stealth, agility, acrobatics and firearms. A real Laura Croft would look a "lot" more like Jessie Graft than Gina Carano.

Keep in mind that Carano has is a trained muay thai pro boxer who has a 100+ fight record, runs 10 miles a day, and is known to take and give a beating. She's probably stronger than 70% of the men out there that weigh 140lbs. Body shape matters when it comes to fighting and she's quite powerfully built for her frame.

But yeah, weight class and muscle mass are both HUGE factors. Point is... I wouldn t want to be on the receiving end of her fist.
 
Don't ge me wrong; Gina is an incredibly fit and formidable fighter "for a woman". A 140 pound man training for MMA is also going to be running 5 - 10 miles a day etc. etc. Unless he has a glass jaw he is most likely going to have an advantage over Gina. There is a reason why women MMA fighters don't cross over and fight men.

Carano is at least 145 lbs in day to day, probably closer to 150(She struggled to make her weight class), with a much stronger upper body than a typical woman. I would bet on her all day long against an untrained 150 lb guy. Being fit means shit against someone about the same mass who spent most of their adult life training in hand to hand combat. She knows how to fight, and how to give and take a punch. Most untrained guys don't.

I find this thread going into full MMA mode funny.

Mostly because the only sort of melee combat in the reboot was press-X-to-win struggles with firearms (so, turn them into string of luck and you're clear) and slamming someone with picking axe after sneaking up.

If she nails the acrobatics and firearms play, it should be fine.

You know, I was playing Rise of The Tomb Raider the other day and thought how ridiculous...how ABSOLUTELY FUCKING RIDICULOUS it was for this little woman to be running around killing bears, humans, and other worldly things by the dozens.

It's fucking stupid.

But then it clicked. *Blink*...this...is a...Tomb Raider game. She is Lara Fucking Croft. She don't take shit from no one. She's a bad ass bitch that'll whoop Nathans ass then kick back and have a cold one, Baby with Duke.

It doesn't matter that she's skinny or tiny, she always has been. Doesn't stop her, obviously.

I wish that were true. I was already gaming for a decade+ when the first Tomb Raider game came out. That is the only one I played. It was all shooting, jumping, climbing, exploring. I don't remember any Hand to Hand combat.

Not sure why a new movie, with new actress would be based on the Angelina Movies. I was thinking they would do their own thing based on the Video games. I am pretty sure they are going in a different direction than the other movies.

This is a reboot, not a sequel.
