Yup, they have to patch the game + get a new driver from nvidia to get their performance sorta on par (said on the front page here at Hardocp :) )
 
I don't know how you ship a game and not noticed the performance is borked for one of the two major gpu manufacturers.

I suspect AMD is conspiring Square Enix to shaft nVidia and score points with their TressFX promotion.
 
I find it funny that Nvidia is playing the blame game, but I expected as much from them.

What I didn't expect and find particularly hypocritical is a website not only waiting for Nvidia to release new drivers but also waiting for a developer to release a patch that caters to Nvidia exclusively before benchmarking it when in the past AMD was not given such chance and they even went as far as publishing a whole article criticizing them.

We will likely see the same thing happen with Bioshock: Infinite. AMD had a team dedicated to work alongside the developers in the same studio during the game's development cycle.

Nvidia owners are finally getting a taste of what AMD owners had to go through when Nvidia paid developers to co-market games with TWIMTBP and withheld final game code from AMD until weeks after release. The fact that all major consoles and quite possibly Valve's SteamBox will have AMD inside signals that this is only the beginning. So they better get used to it.

P.S: I have only one question to ask now. Where is the Nvidia = better drivers myth now? And will we see an article bashing Nvidia for not working closely with developers? (You don't need to answer :))

doubt it...Tomb Raider was a rare exception...Crysis 3 was an AMD sponsored game yet Nvidia released optimized drivers the day before release and ahead of AMD...Tomb Raider was different because AMD wanted to hype TressFX as being better on their cards when in reality it shouldn't be too big of a performance gap

most AMD titles don't perform any better then on Nvidia hardware...and Nvidia does have the better driver development team...more resources

So AMD is terrible because they used on open source code to create a tech, with the aid of the developers, that takes adnvatage of Direct Compute?

A company makes something, makes it run good on their hardware, all the while making it accessible to the competition, and that is a bad thing? Get used to it, if the new consoles come out and are running on AMD hardware you expect similar bechmarks to the ones above to follow.

Maybe AMD should of called and asked Nvidia if they wanted to rename it "Physx 2.0"and give them all the rights and make it an Nvidia only tech.
 
Too bad tressFX is half-baked... not worth having on even if you can run it. It looks pretty at the right angles but from the sides you can see it literally hover over her shoulders when in motion. Shadows from the hair also flicker under Crossfire configurations.

I think it looks fantastic for a first iteration of a new game feature. I hope and expect to see it refined and in more games in the future. This is an AMD developed vendor neutral feature that any developer can choose to add to their games.

If they can work out some of the quirks it will be great, just feels like it was a little rushed for inclusion in TR.
 
It really appears that AMD has turned a positive corner and maybe the leader, but tressfx just seems really dumb.. all the things we need graphically realistic hair did not ramp up to the top of my list.

So there you go, it is not only going to take a driver update, but also a patch update for the game to get the most out of NVIDIA GeForce GPUs. I myself am experiencing slow performance, (R.E. 20's FPS) with GTX 680 SLI at maxed out in-game settings, with FXAA. There is definitely a performance issue that needs resolving. The only thing you can do right now, if you are experiencing slow performance, is turn TressFX off, back to Normal, and try lowering in-game setting, starting with SSAO, to try and improve performance. We will have a full evaluation of this game, and its performance and IQ next week with tips on how to get the most out of it performance wise.
 
I haven't seen TressFX in work yet. but even without tressfx nvidia needs a new driver. the HD 7970 Ghz is 50% faster than GTX 680. So nvidia needs to address that performance gap asap.
 
It is a stupid idea that AMD is trying to compete with Nvidia at throwing money towards game development studios.

1. The games will be eventually optimized on both vendor's cards.
2. Nvidia sits on a large pile of cash reserve and AMD doesn't have many more buildings to sell.

AMD better spends the money on hiring more engineers than bribing the game studios. Technology advancement brings in long term profitability, and bribing can only catch short term success.
 
Of course those benchmarks are just in the built in game benchmark, which is very short, and just flys around Lara.

Our run-through will be a lengthy bit of actual gameplay.

I wasn't actually serious, I just wanted to be the first to throw that out there.

Regardless, the game developers would notice if they tweaked the code at the last second and suddenly Nvidia GPUs ran 40% slower than equivalent AMD. So either they did it intentionally and didn't care, or Nvidia cards always sucked.


If TressFX translates well to fur and plants, it'll be awesome.

The benchmark, Nvidia loses. However its specially coded for AMD chips..

However in game playability is basically the same as any other title.(e.g gtx 680 is faster than a 7970 but slower than a ghz edition) even with tressfx enabled and this is what is most important. As most people would rather play the game than the benchmark.

Basically AMD paid for the benchmark but not the game when it comes to the optimization.

Definitely points to a late introduction of the feature.

I expect the glitches and performance hit will be improved drastically on both AMD and NVidia after patches and driver releases.
 
TressFx is a open standard? Wow look at that, AMD using open standards unlike nvidia and physX where it can definitely run on AMD hardware its just drivers that stop it. Well I heard some where that nvidia folded to ps4 console devs to give them physx support even though the ps4 will be AMD hardware. I still havent seen any physx implementation that makes me want a nvidia card just for that feature. I am actually dling TR now on steam to play since I cant play SimCity.
 
I have a GTX670 for graphics and a GTX460 for Physx on my main. The combo worked fantastically for Batman, does having a dedicated Physx card help with DirectCompute related effects like TressFX?
 
I think I got like 19fps as a min with SLI Titans and a 930 @ 4.2. TressFX enabled 1080p ultimate settings.

It definitely isn't an "open standard" as it requires a license which is neither free nor guaranteed to be granted and is platform-specific. It would be like calling H.264 or MP4 an open standard.

If it was written in OpenCL, it would be an open standard.
 
As rarely as PhysX is actually implemented, its a side bonus that's not really a must for the end experience. Its nice, but not necessary.

To be honest, since there are only two main competitors in this niche market that is consumer PC GPU's, why would one help the other - especially if the tech for the new "feature" was bought and paid for & there was no competitor to it? (granted, small change for these companies). I don't like proprietary features either, but I understand why they did it.

From a business standpoint, I think its just to differentiate one brand from another to imply "our cards can do it, our competitors cannot- buy our cards!!."

If it is open standard, that's good news (especially in a AAA title), but it took long enough! I do hope its not only for hair and that the DC component is used for physics simulation going forward.

The way I look at it, its ATI's new "thing" as opposed to nvidia's own "thing"

I think its more because its still a console game ported to PC. A lot of cutscenes on PC look worse than in-game because they are using console graphics, they never bother to make a PC version of cutscenes since not all PCs will have the same settings anyways.

Then why not use the graphics engine to render the cutscenes? I hate looking at pre-rendered video when the machines I'm using to play the game is several quadrillion orders of magnitude more powerful than the machines involved in making the pre-rendered video.
