What I do is use these compounds

arcticlean_sml.jpg

I put compound 1 on the thermal pad, remove it with a Q-tip . then after its removed put Compound 2 , and then wipe it again with Q-tip .

While applying new compound, i put a little bit on the the heatspreader, and spread it with my finger wrapped in polythene( i have tried the credit card spreading method, doesn't work on those tiny GPU's ) . Then put the heatsink on it .

Anything I'm doing something wrong ? Maybe Q-tip leaves some cotton theads on there ?

Also if the previous thermal compound or these liquids go on the area around the GPU, is it game over for the card ?
Forgot to mention , Using MX-2 .

what are you applying the compound on? ive never used those cleaning products good ole alcohol for me :)

the ideal application i believe is to wipe away the liquid with a lint free cloth. Make sure the die is dry before applying TIM.

also you want to put the TIM on the die of the graphics card, not the heatspreader, just to ensure good contact with the die.

if the liquid contacts the package of the gpu (the green pcb like square teh die sits on) you should let it completely dry then probably would be best to clean it agian with some alcohol.

I use strips from a coffee filter (lint free) and alcohol to clean the surfaces. I let it air dry. Cheap and effective.

Yes you should avoid q-tips. As mentioned above cut up a coffee filter to use as wipes.

Also if the previous thermal compound or these liquids go on the area around the GPU, is it game over for the card ?

In general no, the contacts are under the chip but still there is no need to be sloppy.

Memory chips with leads out the sides can be affected by thermal compounds. Just dont be sloppy, apply just enough and if you want tape off the leads with masking tape or something if your hands are unsteady. Just take your time and use care and you will not have any problems at all. Getting in a hurry is where trouble usually shows up. Think before you act.
