Hmm, now that epyc in TR hack is even more interesting, set the 16 cores that don't have direct memory access to mine and then have 16 cores free for whatever you want.

Right up until crypto crashes and everyone is stuck with a boatload of expensive hardware that's half paid for.
 
IMO for the "not stable" in my experience from mining via my systems, really depends on the algo, the load, specific settings etc, I have had mine going full bore gaming extra windows etc without a problem and "suffering" end of day performance "lost" from 1-5%, so basically made the bank and still able to do what I wanted to do

other algo, drivers or whatever, it was either mine at at best 40% load "stable" or only mine, so essentially could not do anything else.

Geforce/Titan or Radeon, Intel or AMD all have very much have their own strengths and weaknesses, the nice thing about having a shit load of cores, you can always disable so of those cores for the mining program lose a bit of performance but still do everything you want to do, with TR there is anything but lack of cores ^.^
could possibly be the Intel chip someone referenced higher IPC A higher clock speed B so that means TR had to run "harder" to achieve similar gain, but because was that much more cores likely also allowed much higher given level of performance from the results

Computing, there is never a silver bullet ^.^

Yeah i was going to say the same. out of 8+ algorithms i run only one causes system slowdown for me on NH and that Neoscript. so basically if i want to watch videos or whatever i just disable that one algo and away i go.
 
You are all better off mining GRLC (Garlicoin.io). Much much better returns if you want to mine for profit.

For those interested; I mine on a variety of junk laying around. For crypto it seems to be all about L3 cache, threads and clock speed

i3-4130 60h/sec
FX-6300 4ghz 275h/sec
FX-8320e stock clocks 300h/sec
Ryzen 5 1500x 425h/sec (stock clocks) (16mb l3)
Ryzen 7 1700 3.5ghz 515h/sec
RX 560 2gb 315h/sec. I tried memory straps, overclocking but didnt seem to make a difference. Guys with 4gb cards can run more threads and get 400+
1080ti 800h/sec ? i dont mine cryptonight with my 1080ti

With the above hardware i am only making $9 a day, which is more then my electric -- but sucks compared to what i was getting 2 weeks ago.
 
I may put one of my extra machines to work and see what happens with mining.
 
Very nicely done video - smooth. Surprised at the hash rate. My OC 1700x at 4ghz with DDR 4 3200 ram at Cas 13 does 660h/s using 8 threads (physical cores). So TR per core is doing better than Ryzen, well at least mine. Nvidia cards don't do so well with the Cryptonight algorithm and the champion for that is Vega. Vege 64 LC has been going for over 3 days now straight at over 2kh/s, about 2.03.

With that many cores one could game and mine at the same time, I've done it with a 1080Ti and Radeon FE previously in the same machine with 4 cores of the 1700x mining and the Radeon FE - The 1080 Ti had no issues gaming smooth. Ryzen and it looks like TR is masterful in multitasking.

The Crypto market is still in a crash, how it will revive is to be seen. Really can't go at current rates on predicting time to payoff, it will probably be wrong. With Crypto, don't count anything in $ unless you cashed it out, it will be all over the place.

Don't forget that any profit must be claimed on income tax, so that is likely another 30-40% off, making payback rate longer.

No tax expert here, but wouldn't it be taxable only after you've made back the initial investment (the cost of the PC)?

NH @ CPU 8700k does about 0,000075 - 0,00008 BTC/day. It doesnt really matter much if it runs 4.7 or 5.0 iirc. I just let it run 5G 24/7.
 
Every new coin that comes along just brings the whole thing closer to some kind of major collapse IMO.

I'd still put my money in gold or silver for when the shit hits the fan.

(I am allowed to keep gold at home too which is even more useful)

Even if the CPU eventually paid for itself, I would feel like it has lost a huge chunk of it's value.
 
I have my threadripper and xeons and video cards folding for Hard OCP DC team. I never have gotten into this mining craze . My spare cpu cyles go towards our team here :)
 
Odd that when you have CPU and GPU mining going the system is unusable. I have my 4670K and 1080Ti both going and my system is plenty usable, youtube, surfing, Outlook/Excel/Word/etc, no issues.

Depends what you think is usable. When mining on my GPU my computer is laggy and studders. Can I watch you tube or play a video? Sure but I get intermittent pauses. To some that would be in usable.

There have been times, not too long ago, where private gold possession was forbidden by Federal Law, and it was not only the USA doing that.

This is like anno "fill in any year" , they can come and take all you own, just change the law...AND DON'T YOU DARE to not obey then. We have had all that in the last century.

When the shit hits the fan, what you need is water, a rucksack with 30 pounds of most needed tools, a car with full diesel, food, and lots of luck...and a plan, and a plan b...aso.

It does take a toll. As in, the CPU will likely only last 20 years instead of 30. I'd hope people would have upgraded by then.
 
I'm really considering doing some mining on gear we've got laying around the office. A pair of HP's with dual E5-2620's, so 4 CPU's in total, 24 cores. I figured since the power is free...

I don't know what to have them working on though. More googling!

From a hardware standpoint - no different at all really. Your right, it doesn't really destroy or devalue your hardware any differently than any other DC project.

However, no one was talking about making an ROI off of SETI. Once you add money into the equation, people tend to go bonkers.
 
ASIC is one thing which new coins try to avoid by design. ASIC brings to much hashrate power into the hands of a few strong whereas GPU's bring little hashrate, evenly distributed, to a lot of small GPUs, ordinary people like you and me vs. the Chinese Crypto Farms. That is why Ethereum is not mined on ASIC and prolly never will be, the devs dont want it to be ASIC friendly but many small miners instead, you and me.

CryptoNight is so far the only cpu-algo that I am aware of that brings a profit worth speaking of. Mind you, even an old AMD FX can be a 3€/day CPU if your electricity cost is as cheap as in Argentina or Brasil, 0.05cent/kWh
Where I live, the nett would be zero with 0.30cent/kWh and 300w/24/7. I just wanted to say, a 5G-AMD-FX can mine a lot, energy aside. Pal o mine does about 6x my hashrate and uses about 6x my energy, circa with FX. Very astonishing. he also runs 2 x 1070 usually on eth-sia in that system. The 2 GPU's together need LESS watt than his CPU ! LoL

I tried 2 5650 Xeons...too old, wouldnt work. Then I tried my 5820k, same, wouldnt work with NH Miner. It runs on a 4thgen i5 but wont or at least didnt on a 5820k, that is odd.

Anyway, yeah, CPU's are back on stage, CPU mining is hip, little wattage with modern processors, almost lag free, very nice 1st impression, running it 24/7 with a rig in sig

ASIC just means Application Specific Integrated Circuit. You can design an ASIC optimized for any program.

Exactly. I never understood why people wanted to buy computers and then have them run at idle the whole time they owned them so they'd last longer.

Not necessarily.

If it was all done under the name of a registered business, and the system were only used for business purposes, then yes, it could be deducted. If it were then changed to personal use, according to SOX regulations, the business would have to 'sell' it to someone and take that money as income and be taxed on it. Current corporate tax rates are now 21% from Federal and somewhat less from the states, depending on thes state. California is pretty high in that area, at 8.84%, and they're looking to raise it because of the Federal rate cut. Texas is pretty low at less than 1%.

If it were a personal use machine doing the mining, then the system itself would not be deductible, but the electricity would be.
 
Hmm, maybe... after we get our solar up and running. It will be free juice for the most part then.

That is odd...If I use my 1600x and 980-Ti to mine Monero I do get a dip in performance, but when I use my GF's 1300x + RX560 the PC is still quite useable when I mine on hers.

You DO NOT have to do any legal paperwork to form a sole proprietorship under tax law, simply start engaging in some work in the attempt to make money. It can pretty much be anything, and this would clearly quality although you would need to consider how much of the use is business and how much is personal if you didn't use a dedicated machine.

And you can lose money in some years as a sole proprietor, especially the first. It's CPA101. (licensed in AZ since 1976)

So by actively mining - to make some money - you can deduct equipment/electrical/other costs. Well looks like I will have some deductions as well on my taxes.

Currently Crypto is crashing or in a crash state - many sellers - This is great time to see which coins break free from Bitcoin trends and are going up in value since many of the sellers are still in the market shifting investments around. For example ETN (Electroneum) gained about 10% today while Bitcoin and Etherium are still losing. I would not make to much out of this at this time but if this type of trend continues then you will be seeing which coins the market is picking as winners and losers. This is about as lazy faire capitalistic market you will see - it will have many crashes but will also rebound quickly. ETN can be mined effectively with a CPU/GPU or even a Mobile phone (mining by phone is in Beta stage, also first Crypto to have agreements with mobile companies, possible payment coin in the future plus another first: https://www.directorstalkinterviews...le-world-congress-first-crypto-coin/412745078 ).

Yeah well the devs if they believe this need to go back to school and ask for their money back. But anyone who can write a crypto block chain can't be that lacking in foresight. I think they are just saying that it wouldn't be economically feasible at this stage. But that's only true as long as the coins are low in value. You see all the big players now hoping in designing mining specific ASICs

Every computer program breaks down into ops. You analyze the ops and see which ones are taking the longest and their frequency. You then allocate circuits based on their prominence. Do you do a lot of vector multiples? Add more vector AVX extensions and make a wider path. Do a lot of memory ops? Make a lot of multi tier cache with a wide (or fast) memory controller and an embedded memory chip. It's not rocket science. A lot of missed branch predictions? Make a more sophisticated branch predictor, shorten the pipe and widen it to reduce penalties, at the expense of clock speed.

Unfortunately this is not a market with clear physical products, it is a market of concepts and ideas and a bunch of half implementations added with some shady characters. I was hoping to see some of the coins after this recent crash be earmarked as rejected, nope everything goes up and down for the most part. Drones following drones maybe. Looks like we need a much bigger crash to do some clearing.

Even during this recent crash, one was still making a profit with GPU's and even a CPU - as it goes up it will just be more so. I see no end in the drought of GPU's at this point in time. Eventually, with all the same mine able coins - the difficulty level will rise to a point where mining becomes less profitable unless prices continue to go out of sight.
 
Interesting to see this picked up by a few websites like wcftech etc. Didn't peg this topic to be that popular but then again in a $1200 GPU market maybe threadripper builds aren't that out of scope...

Games like GTA V selling like hotcakes is killing gaming. There's absolutely no fun to that game after the 1st hour, just a reskin of previous GTA Games so now everyone is looking for that magical open world without any decent story line.

Metro series I played through to end, Xcom and Xcom 2 (along with originals), Max Payne, Dark Souls, Nioh, Horizon Zero dawn, many of the classic RPGs etc all because I actually wanted to see the story unfold. Now I am stuck with crap that allows me to do anything but there's no real point to playing other than to kill time which is better spent doing something creative like Airbrushing or Mining.

Until games improve I'll keep my 5 Titan XPs, and 40 other cards mining, because they are better served making me money than giving money to companies like Rockstar that's going to reskin GTA V with western theme and call it Red Dead Redemption. Let me know when a new Elder Scrolls,Cyberpunk 2077, Total War or Xcom game is out.

And finally added a Threadripper setup with a 360mm AIO cooler

When games improve, I'm set. Mining has allowed a lot of upgrades :D

With crypto crashing, what's payback time now, 3 years?
Crypto based on CrytopNight is not near as volatile as BItcoin that is in the news. Just checked the calculator, and all is about the same today. Down from ~$380 to ~$340 yearly...And again, there are more profitable coins to mine or using NiceHash showed to be about double when I wrote the article.
