Man this forum is completely dead! come on people! lets talk about video game physics!!!!:D

We will have more physics when more companies support and use an open standard.

We need realworld physics. No not in game, i mean when, say, you tilt to the left in a game, your monitor will physical spin to the left 30 degrees. Can you imagine the implication! Racing games! PORN!???

Open standards work so so well :p It would take years and years of bitching and moaning and pettiness for them to decide on anything, by which time it would be outdated nonsense where noone had any motivation to push it forward. Would be better for physx or something that actually works to be adopted by AMD and go forward from there, like they were offered, or something like directX.

What is the future of this crap?

Is it really in need of an entire subsection?

You might as well make a dial-up subforum. :D

Really it does not make for more enjoyable games. Curtains flapping or more "realistic" things breaking, or particles, all while slowing down your computer as it has to render more crap.... Bullshit

this forum is dead for 2 reasons

1) intel bought havok (remember havok fx?)
2) nvidia bought physx

While people complain about console ports not "pushing their rigs" and using them to the full...a whole load of other people complain about things using too much? :p

Wait lets try this again...

Anti aliasing does not make for more enjoyable games. Blurry edges or more "realistic" transparent blurring, all while slowing down your computer as it has to do more passes.... Bullshit

Thats the point of a PPU, it's a seperate unit that does all the rendering of "extra crap". But really...it doesn't really slow things down to be honest. But being a graphical enhansement does make parts of the world more believable. If one company decided that they would licence free tech then it could have more of an impact on actual gameplay (see nvidia tech demo games).

I thought Ageia was promising Star Trek "holodeck" experience withtheir cards. They made one set of cards and hawked flying paper to nVidia, nothing new here.
I've said it before, it a damn cuecat.

I'm going to buy five PhysX cards and run them all at the same time and hook them to my nipples and go digital.

Peace!

^ you'll experience more success with that use than the PhysX cards did with their original intent. :p

AMD_Gamer strikes again.

Yup. I really wish [H]ardforum kept count of threads along with posts when people make them. I'd say AMD_Gamer is in the top 3 at least. Even better, I'd say that half of his posts are new threads.

Just to add to the conversation; proprietary physics software (PhysX) sucks.

not sure if it's related to physics but this looks nice
I have wondered about a feature like this for a long time. First time I saw this video.

Why don't they already have this as a standard feature in games? All the modern games look like rat poop when it comes to natural interactive character animation.

If you have any extra NVIDIA cards laying around without any new PhysX titles to play, you could use that extra GPU power to fold for Team 33!
Put that power to use and fold for [H]ard!

Who's going to pay the extra utility bill? :D

Who's going to pay the extra utility bill? :D
Not to get off topic, but we fold for a great cause, and if it ups the e-bill by a bit, that's the sacrifice we are willing to make in order to help others. :)

I get tired of the same conversations over and over, but cant help but talk about them lol

Physics in games may be little changes and additions but can make a big difference to the look and feel of the game making it more realistic. Now I'm not saying physics alone can make or break a game but each little detail that adds to the game and makes it more realistic the more it draws you in to it's environment.

I love all the little details because it is those little details that can have a huge impact on you and make the experience more enjoyable.

Now what I do hate, as everyone else, is proprietary APIs that will only run on one piece of hardware. Batman Arkam Assylum and Alice Madness Returns are two such games that I played recently that made me hate Nvidia that much more as I wanted to play these games more on my HTPC which had a GTX 470 and looked incredible in these games.... But living between two houses I took my flatscreen to my fiances and had to use an older rear projection DLP at my house... which nvidia didnt play nice with and allow 1080p on or better scaling options to prevent overscan. The ATI 6950 card I put in looked better on this TV... but lacked the physx support I wanted.

I know settleing on a open source Physics API is somewhat out of the question as someone else stated because then there is bickering between people and companies on what to and not to use, years of red tape and holdbacks to get support from developers to put it in thier games and so on and so forth and then when it finally makes it to market the next big thing is out and no one cares anymore. then you have some companies that try to do it on thier own in thier games and I love that... but time is money so they dont go all out.

Honestly in the bottom of my heart I hope that PhysX contniues to be used and grows insanely...so much so that someone will write a OpenCL PhysX emulator or similar and allow EVERYONE to enjoy the same benefits that Nvidia offers :)

That being said I love my 6970s in crossfire... but I think I would trade them and my three monitors in a heartbeat for a nice Nvidia 580 SLI or even 570 SLI setup with a 3D Vision monitor and glasses :D

Physics is dead

I disagree.

Realistic physics in games is not dead. PhysX is borderline dead, as is the need for it.

More new engines are just doing what used to be dedicated physics computations internally in the engine, using either DX11 direct compute or the CPU.

I suspect this will be the future - in part - as it is not tied to proprietary hardware solutions.

PhysX will still kick around until the death of this generation of consoles, but after that I think we will see it fade away.
