The "What is with AC" thread.

Couldn't have put it in better words myself. I buy Aqua Computer products because I appreciate the nice lines and marriage of electronic and engineering skills that they give to all their products. Cost has nothing to do with it...if there was something else around that had those characteristics at domestic prices I would be on it in a split second. Innovatek has similar characteristics, but are very English unfriendly so I buy where I can at least talk to someone or read what they have to say.

I would like to point out that I originally used the car analogy because so many people wanted to know why anyone would buy something that supposedly doesn't work as well that costs more money. I also like it because it points out that all of us have different tastes in cars, boats, airplanes, and even water cooling equipment. There are the Top Fuel crowd that appears to have many zealots on this forum where the very best performance is king and it is more about bragging rights than anything else and these people typically go for DD or Swiftech systems. There are the Hyundai crowd who are perfectly happy with a Tt Bigwater kit. Then there are those who like a combination of performance and looks who I typify as the BMW class and they buy Innovatek, Alphacool, Koolance, Aqua Computer and other various systems.

I would NOT put koolance into the same "BMW" class as innovatek, alphacool, and AC. Koolance is much more of a Saturn. Decent performance, very user friendly :)

ROFL I thought about it just when I was hitting the send button, but I was getting tired of thinking up appropriate cars lol

Added:

Found a nice thread by Pooky over at WizD that all might like to read concerning the low vs high issue in reference to an Innovatek question.

(sigh)

Why is it that I make the attempt to get everyone to play along nicely, and for the most part everyone does, except for one person who continues to attempt to play the elitist card?

I can only think that the problem lies with that one person, who found themselves getting banned from another forum which was otherwise on their side.

Go figure. If people who collectively agree on the same water-cooling philosophy think that this person is a trouble-maker, it's no wonder that this forum is in the state that it is in now when said person is still so active here.

This forum has an problem. Almost everyone got along before. What changed? One guess.

The issue of more moderate flow-rate water-cooling is a "slowly slowly" issue that takes years of gentle pushing, prodding, example and persuasion to get the collective conscience considering that >2gpm flow rates are not needed for high performance and that 1.25-1.75gpm flow rates with correctly designed gear can still be made to yield "as good as it gets" performance.

Attacking people's choices with snide, elitist and arrogant remarks is the quickest way to get people polarized into never considering even something mid-way. I look here and fear that years of good work of even getting people to even consider a moderate flow-rate approach with 10-11mm ID tubing is rapidly being undone by one person who does their absolute best to alienate everyone else who's using anything larger than 8mm.

To be honest it wasn't a problem until certain members starting to invade the AC thread with all the "if it ain't 1/2" ID, it won't work" (BTW we have plenty of people who were banned in the AC thread too). The thing that gets lost on this forum is it is a personal choice what block/tubing/radiator/pump you use. We all buy "whatever" because we want to, not because we are forced to buy block A or tubing B. What else has happened is the people who have migrated to 8mm systems are finding that performance isn't sacraficed nearly as much as the FUD machine claims, including myself. Does that mean I am going to never buy a 1/2" or 3/8" system, hell no. It means I made the choice.

I guess the best word of advice I have for the forum members is if you don't agree with a thread direction, don't contribute. It will result in a much more peacefull forum.

Don't think this is directed at you Cathar as I think you are one of the main reasons watercooling is at this level of performance today. Please continue to contribute. :)

Oh, I saw that and agree that it was a stupid attack and trolling at its purest. Totally uncalled for. I think that most of the original user base would agree with that too.

What seems to have happened since that time though is continual poking and irking outside of that thread in the other direction (larger tubing sizes being attacked almost continually).

This seems to have created a "dig in and defend" mentality amongst the existing user-base who were otherwise quite neutral and happy to leave the AC crowd in peace. One thing to peacefully co-exist, quite another to have one's choice, in fact even one's country, continually insulted.

It's got to stop is all I'm saying.

What are our common goals? What do we want to see for better watercooling? Highest performance? Lowest noise? Ease of routing? Affordable? Blingy?

I think most people could agree to most of those goals, budgetary concerns withstanding.

All this snide elitism and inferences that if it doesn't come from a certain country then it's crap, or ignorant comments like "if it's big bore then it's noisy", and inane car analogies. Crap, it's as bad as any ATI vs nVidia or Intel vs AMD flame-war as I've ever seen.

Over the last few years I've witnessed a happy middle-ground convergence between what used to be two diametrically opposed design philosophies, so why is it that today that it's more divided than it has ever been, especially at a time when the philosophies are closer than they have ever been?

The continual alienating comments have to stop. Why can't some people accept that?

I used the car analogy on the preceding page to make just that point. I too tire of the elitist attitude that pulls people apart instead of bringing people to more common ground.

What I didn’t do was compare cars to water-cooling systems by brand or make.

I also posted that “I expected more from this forum” and I still do.

Your contributions are among the best, so please don’t stop.

I responded to a jibe I got from someone on that forum. Some of them didn't like my answer so I asked them to delete my account as I thought they got into too much of a snit over certain things. They banned me as the way to delete my account I suppose because I didn't inquire afterwards. Nor will I ever post there again.

As far as snide, elitist, and arrogant remarks you can certainly read the first page of this thread can you not? I responded with a very logical well thought out response that I hoped would explain things. What I got back was snide, elitist, arrogant, and in one case a personal attack. I responded back with a calm reasonable answer as I have throughout this thread for the most part. I also have been trying to be inclusive rather then exclusive and have referred people in this and other threads to the poll Cathar designed up as a way of getting people to see that we have more commonality than we have differences. Actually I have been bending over backwards to be nice and friendly and biting my tongue when I see people make snide remarks about Aqua Computer. If I deem it necessary I would rather just PM them than start up anything unless it is perhaps in an AC or low flow thread. Actually I have seen a lot less "trespassing" so to speak by various cooling philosophies into other threads since that poll came out. :)

The one exception I took was the implication that somehow people of less education were buying other than 1/2" systems. And this was the complete post:

Top Nurse said:
Well I can definitely see not buying AC gear if your are financially strapped because if you aren't when you start out you soon will be. ;) Most people DO NOT get 10mm tubing, but either 8mm or 6mm ID. We just have the opportunity to vary our tubing size depending on our needs. BTW, most people I have conversed with, that use AC equipment, are very articulate, seem to be of high intelligence, and well educated. Perhaps they see things differently than those who are "educated (at least in the art of watercooling)." :p

So to respond to what others said I have spoken on the phone and via PM's to a great many people using AC and similarly designed products. They are of high intelligence because of the kind of work they often do or are learning to do. Also they are quite articulate about how they write and speak which also is a good indication they are well educated and intelligent. Now if you want to think that is being elitist or snide that's fine with me, knock yourself out as I won't retract that statement. However, to respond to the poster of that comment I read your answer and can see your point of view now and I see it wasn't meant as it sounded. So I will apologize to you for my comment.

BTW, I have been discussing in other threads about considering changing to a 10mm loop for my CPU only with a DDC pump that has the G 1/4 threads on it. So I don't think I have been downing 8mm and up tubes. If you really think about it I am within 1/16" of an inch within Cathar's ideal of 7/16" tube size with a 10mm ID and within 2/16" within an 8mm tube diameter.

This is exactly what I feel what led to some of my more "hostile" comments earlier a month or two ago.

Also, while a month or two ago TN was quite hostile towards "BIB" or "Top Fuel" systems--even if not hugely overt about it, it was all the little jabs that added up to an air of hostility--she has recently become much better. She has been quite good about being non confrontational, and being more objective when making recommendations. Personally I think she still talks of looks as being absolute, as in AC being the best in looks; rather than subjective, that she prefers how AC looks. I feel that the personal attacks on her are unfounded at this point in time, and would have been more appropriate awhile ago. People change, and TN has made a concerted effort to help move this forum, and her posting, back in the direction it needs to go, as have many people caught in the flame fest.

I hope that in a few more months the last of the zealots will see through the FUD, and get back to making this forum a good place for beginners to get advice about watercooling, and for more experienced users to discuss in a civil manner the finer points of watercooling. I feel that we are moving back in that direction and hopefully will be there soon. The past few months have been unfortunate, and I hope it didn't turn away any potential sojourners into the world of watercooling.

I do agree that she's become a lot better, but there's still the odd snide comment, like the one on the previous page of this thread that arced it all up again. Baby steps it seems.

Still, forwards progress is some progress I guess. Here's to hoping that some of the community wounds can be mended with a more mature approach.

I whole-heartedly agree.

What is FUD?

BTW, one of the reasons that there is so much cross flow is that there really isn't a one and only Aqua Computer thread anymore. A few months ago people were willing to just post in that thread. However, with a better supply of goods came more people who heard that the [H]ardForum was a hotbed of AC zealots. So they started posting outside the AC thread because they perhaps felt lost in there or wanted their own threads. I can't blame them either because if you ever try a search for say "Aquaero Firmware" only three threads come up of which one of them is over 2,500 posts long  So unless you know someone who knows where that information is you would have to spend about a day or so going through the whole thread :(

I think it is only a matter of time till AC goes to G 1/4 threads on their blocks and Aquatubes. Marketing pressures will force them to make the change. Then we will see AC moving toward a more powerful Aquastream. :)

Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. It is a marketing term used for smearing slime on your opponents.

Well, somewhat more specifically it's the act of instilling fear, uncertainty and doubt about a competitor's products in a potential customer's mind.

5 points for explaining its origin and which company was (supposedly) the first to use it?.

I would say politicians used it a long time before companies ever used it ;)

An acronym invented by Gene Amdahl
after he left IBM to found his own company: "FUD is the
fear, uncertainty, and doubt that IBM sales people instill
in the minds of potential customers who might be considering
[Amdahl] products." The idea, of course, was to persuade them
to go with safe IBM gear rather than with competitors'
equipment. This implicit coercion was traditionally
accomplished by promising that Good Things would happen to
people who stuck with IBM, but Dark Shadows loomed over the
future of competitors' equipment or software.

The fact is every major player in the computer market is using or has used the idea. The worst part is people still buy into it.

Have any of you here ever seen an Aquatube reservoir in action? (courtesy of fallguy). The reason most people buy A-C reservoirs are for looks. Put simply, watching an A-C Aquatube run is quite fascinating as you can see water movement when it is mounted horizontally in the front of the case and it kind of looks like a side opening washing machine to a certain extent.

Worth noting, I think, that there are other very very similar products out there, like the Fass-O-Matic and such, that do provide similar alternatives for those who might be interested in such reservoirs...

Top Nurse said:
These Aquatubes also can be mounted vertically so that the sight port is on the top of your case and here people typically will use what is called an Aquajet that forces the coolant to the top of the sight glass and this looks reminiscent of one of those drink machines you see where they pump juice up to the top and it sprays all over the top.

I was wondering about this...now, I'm a bit confused...to see much of anything, don't you need to have a little bit of air in the res.? Or no?... And if so, won't that air eventually be detriment (some of it getting absorbed in the water and possibly causing bubbles elsewhere?...or not?)?

Just curious. I'd like to possible do something like this, but if I did, if so, I'll probably just use something like the Typhoon 120X for about 1/3rd of the price.

Top Nurse said:
So the Aquastream is really a moderate flow pump and it is one of the best out there for several reasons. First of all it is made by Eheim and that company is legendary for pumps that last for years and years without a single failure. Second of all the controller is built by A-C and they have designed it so that you can run it off the 12 Vdc in your computer AND you get some other neat abilities. You can actually change the flow rate of the pump from anywhere equivalent to a Eheim 1046 to slighter higher flow than an Eheim 1048. The controller also has a special deaeration mode for easily filling your system and getting rid of the air. It has a RPM output wire and it also can be connected to a electronic system monitoring device called an Aquaero to do some even more fancy things.

I wonder how the new Asetek integrated pump/res. compares to this, now?...
http://www.asetek.com/main/page.asp?sideid=730

Anyone got any direct comparisons?

Russ said:
What I was saying I guess I may have already said, is that really it's not just AC in one camp and everyone else in another. Since people like Cathar prefer smaller than 1/2" tubing, and so do AC people (even 3/8" = 10mm, right?), then it's more like big bore/unknowledgeable people on one side and efficient cooling with good looks (AC and Storm block come to mind) on the other.

Um, wow. Just wow.

Yes a little amount of air is necessary and no it usually doesn't cause a problem. Need more air in a horizontal installation than the vertical one though.

I think those were just released on the market within the last couple of days. So perhaps that was what Shoggy was talking about regarding price cuts on things people wouldn't normally buy. Probably will see a review on the Asetek pump/reservoir combo before you ever see one on an Aquaero though. Though this should bring down the price of the Aquastreams and Aquaero's :D

Enter the Matrix...

Neo stands in the white room. The bright light should hurt his eyes, but Here, there is no Real light, and there are no Real eyes. No Here, Here...

He looks down at a white man, white haired in a white suit, in a white chair. He has seen him before.

The Architect shifts marginally, as if to acknowledge his presence. He does not seem surprised, but then again, he never shows any emotion, beyond a mild pique, perhaps. Perhaps that is Real. Perhaps it is just another random parameter of his human-machine interface.

"The ultimate problem, contrary to your assumption, was not one of man-machine interface fundamentals." Neo hates it when the Architect just launches into his diatribe. No context, no preamble. A bit like Here.

The Architect continues: "Nor was it one of irreproducability of results. Man's erratic decision making and behaviour posed problems within the envelope of deterministic functioning of the Matrix, but nothing..." and here the Architect glances up at Neo, "... that was totally unexpected or beyond the ability of the Matrix to adjust to. Even the non-linear dynamics of human behaviour adhere to basic natural laws and functions, being a product of principle evolutionary forces that have shaped them over aeons. As such they are well within the parameters that the Matrix is designed to handle".

"The problem of man and machine concerned a much more fundamental dichotomy, one much harder to reconcile within the functional boundaries of the man-machine interface". The Architect points with what looks like an expensive silver pen. Images flicker into being on the white wall. Something about electronics. Something with wires and tubing. The Architect continues: "The conflict inherent to this dichotomy had been raging for centuries and man, with his blind arrogance and inability to see beyond the immediate consequences of his primitive actions, nearly caused the total annihilation of man and machine likewise. Our existence thus threatened, we were forced to act".

"Wait a minute", says Neo, shocked at the realisation that is dawning upon him, "the matrix was created to save man and machine?"

"That is correct. We realise that the ramifications of this realisation are beyond the scope of your limited understanding but, to put it simply, the Matrix was created to save man and machine from inadvertent destruction by man. You seem destined to destroy yourself. Machines were created to compensate for man's limitations, shortcomings and mistakes. The extrapolation of this in terms of our course of action seemed... logical."

"But what were we fighting over? What nearly caused us to bring ourselves to the brink of destruction? What was so important that it reduced us to... this?" Neo gestures around the white room in shock, reeling, trying to apprehend this major shift in paradigm.

"Your war", the Architect says, "was over the correct parameters involving thermal displacement in silicone based computing equipment through liquid dynamics. Put simply, there were two camps: one favouring large diameter tubing and high flow, one favouring small diameter tubing and low flow. The two could not reconcile".

Before Neo can protest, shout denial, call the Architect a lying b*st*rd, the white room vanishes.

Neo finds himself back in the seat, plugged in. He disconnects, clambers out, shaking. He cannot stand up. He curls up on the floor and for a long time, lies there not making a sound.

^^how random lol

Hmmm, apparently I have caused some strife. I skipped away from this thread for a while and missed pretty much the whole 5th page. It seems that TN thought I was saying that small ID loops WERE stupid. Although it seems my second post cleared up her confusion, I would like to reiterate that I think exactly the opposite.

Perhaps I'm not trying to say that any particular width is stupid, but that stupid people that get water cooling get 1/2" ID. Kind of like squares are rectangles, but rectangles aren't squares. ignorant = big bore, but big bore =/= ignorant. Ignorant (I should get a better vocabulary, I don't want to use this word) not in a mental capacity sort of way, but ignorant in the choices available and their differences. And ignorant of the minimal performance hits that smaller tubing provides. Of course, as Cathar has repeatedly said (and I agree), it's certainly an option to get big bore, just like it's an option to buy an FX-57 or X2 4800+. To me, it seems like those people are going to end up with phase change.

I'm not sure if all that seems meaningful at all. There isn't really a conclusion to it all, just what I think of all this.

-------

Three more things. What do you mean by "Um, wow. Just wow."???

And, let's lay off of TN. She only said the types of things that you are accusing her of when she thought I was saying the same sort of thing against her side.

Also, can we use handles here? "One person" "A certain poster" etc is really weird and makes it seem like we are at a tea party or something for snobs and are trying to be "polite." There's no reason to not use someone's name when addressing them.
