Yes, That's true and I know about it. But you missed my point. R&D costs must be supported either way.
R700 being already in development means nothing, when the costs to support that development, must be cut down or suppressed, due to the very precarious financial situation of AMD.
If you're not considering this, you are assuming that R700 is done already and I'm sorry, but that's just wishful thinking. If it was ready, ATI would've done the same thing it did at the time of the R520 debacle. It lived for 3 months and it was replaced by R580.
And then, there's what I mentioned: R700 being based on R600, which should decrease R&D costs. But R600 suffers from a few problems, that require at least a partial re-design of the chip, which really does not fit in such a short time frame.

But were the costs really cut down ? I don't know, but assuming that it's done now, is assuming too much IMO.
If they didn't cut down the costs, then the investment is larger and in AMD's current situation, if the product doesn't succeed they'll be in a far worse situation than the one they are right now.

Kyle, thanks for clearing things up. I wanted to comment on this story Saturday in a couple of the threads that sprung up, as what the X-Bit article reported was contradictory to my knowledge. But I figured for the off chance something changed without me knowing, I better be safe and double check on Monday before making an ass out of myself :p I can now confirm R700 series still on for 2008.

In the original bet I actually meant the Rx700 series, as I said "the R700 series". But we'll give Manny a fighting chance and let's just say the actual R700 card :p
 
When is R700 slated to be released now? Is it really August or sometime sooner (hopefully)?

While arguably "next-gen" is here in Stoly's case, I will wait till R700 is on the shelves at retailers like is the deal with MannyC.

I bet we won't see any mohawk nor any donation guys. It might be a coincidence but I really doubt it. If we don't see any mohawk in a month after the R700 is released, I would suggest a perma ban. ;)

I'm a bit lost. Are we talking about the R700 as a "next gen" GPU or as the 4870x2 which is just crossfire-on-a-stick?

actually that's been ringing around my head for quite a while...
 
I use to shoot in the USPSA. Our local gun store owner got us all pink shirts with his logo on them. We wore them on a out of town match and got teased and called the "tootie fruity team". We later heard them saying, "hey where's are team shirts?"

We laughed at our selves and the looks others gave us but still had a blast. :D
 
Let's track down this Manny Calavera, I don't think that it would be as hard as tracking down Osama bin Laden.
