The Sky is Falling

it's very easy to get the wrong idea from a slide

I believe that slide was a "platform" slide, indicating that a DDR3/R700 combo will be in 2009, there is nothing specific on there about R700 or even R680, just R6XX, and R7XX, and it's also listed under a refresh, R700 could be the launch product in 2k8 and R7XX(say R720) is a refresh in 2k9.

The slide really doesn't tell anyone enough to come to a conclusion
about R700, or R7XX launch time in general, it does though give us a good timeline on their next platform :p

I know Kyle has access to tremendous amounts of inside info, but I really beleive that he is dead wrong on this one.I have been buying and trading stock for over a decade.I have been a AMD share holder for near 8 years now,off and on.Mostly on.Something tells me beyond the many other obvious points, that things are very different in Sunnyvale right now.

:)

Again,I hope to death I am wrong and he is right.I very much want to see the continuation of the battle of the titans (Nv & AMD).Hell I'll wear the.....uh nah nevermind

:p

If you so strongly believe it, SAY IT!!! hahahah.... now there's a bet. That would make for an interesting year.

Someone will be dressing up in a tutu by the end of 2008. I just don't want to see any pics of it.

Kyle, are you sure you want to do this in Texas?????

Have you not seen the episode of Top Gear where the english boys tried that and were chased by a bunch of "good ol' boys"???!!!!

Either way Merry X'Mas to you and all the folk at [H]. i have learned lots in this 1st year in [H] and in the building my 1st rig.

Ho Ho Ho

Safest way to do this is on his city's 'Gay Pride' day :D :p

I would rather bet CASH.Or shares in Intel or Nvidia ? My wife and I own a few :) I did something like this years ago.I lost the best, and I had to dress up as a woman for 48 hours, and go to classes.

Has ATI released a "wtf were we thinking" video of the 2900XT ala nv's 5800 blow dryer spoof? I'd like to see the 2 of em in a celebrity DM. :D

Either way, glad to hear about this as SLI's no longer an option for me. ;)

This is great news. R700 is one of my highest anticipated products for 2008, more so than just about any other product. It would have been a bad turn of events if it got delayed until 09. Thankfully it's not the case. :)

So what do you guys think? Can i dare to dream for Q2 08? or more like Q3? Will there be any mention at CES in jan, or will it be all about R680?

does the R680 (dual RV670s?) even stand a chance against the GTX or the new GX2?

And yes I think for seconds, minutes, hours and even days that AMD won't release a new GPU architecture until late 08 at the earliest.

Put your money where your mouth is?

I like these odds I like ATI and I like having a new spraypaint for CS:S

Manny, you should bet against Kyle. Loser gets the whole pink tutu treatment and all :D

Kyle, thanks for clearing things up. I wanted to comment on this story Saturday in a couple of the threads that sprung up, as what the X-Bit article reported was contradictory to my knowledge. But I figured for the off chance something changed without me knowing, I better be safe and double check on Monday before making an ass out of myself :p I can now confirm R700 series still on for 2008.

Ok,if I am wrong I will donate 100 USD in cash,or 5 shares of INTC stock (at todays current trading price of $25.72 , 0.57 (-2.17%) to a charity of Kyles choice in North America.Whatever is worth more at the time,in a years time from right now.

Rules :

It cannot be a paper launch.

It has to have shipped and be in stock @ NCIX (NCIX is pretty close with AMD,being a launch partner and all) by one year ahead of todays date
Monday Decemeber 17th 2007.

No preview/early peek stuff :D

It has to be widely available in brick and mortar stores/Newegg/NCIX. in one years time
from today.

Ok,I cant shake on the deal,as my distance to Texas is pretty far,but I give my word I will pay if wrong. If Kyle is wrong,he has to pay the charity of my choice,a similar amount.I think thats fair. :)

Deal ?

Awesomeness. I am in. Does this still count if NVIDIA buys AMD this year?

What do you have in mind?

I take "late 08" to mean after October 1, 2008 or last quarter....

I will buy you a new desktop video card of your choice if AMD does not launch next-gen GPU by then. If AMD launches before then, you have to get an [H] mohawk and supply full pictures for us here in the forum.

Ok I want a R700 :D:D

I'll have to grow more hair to get a mohawk but I can offer to shave my head.

Well by H mohawk, I mean the bracketed [H] trademark left sticking out the top of your head. :) Should not require more than a months growth to get that done right.

I don't think that nVidia would buy AMD, even ATi is too big for AMD to chew. For nVidia to eat up both AMD and ATi, I think that nVidia would be digging its own grave. However it would be interesting to see nVidia+ATi+AMD going against Intel, as long as nVidia doesn't do what they did with ULi again.

Intel wouldn't stand a chance in that scenario. Having said that, I don't believe we'll even hear rumors of such a buyout. Wouldn't the FTC step in?

I would think the FTC would certainly step in and take a [h]ard look at that. But I dont think NVDA will ever do such a thing.

AMDs stock is falling daily. If anyone was to buy AMD today it would cost only about 4.7 billion which is a lot less than the 5.4 billion that AMD paid for ATI.

From what I've heard Nvidia, Samsung, Toshiba and IBM are some of the rumored candidates to buy AMD along with Sony and even Apple.

LOL!!!! i was thinking the same episode...

"murderer to brokeback, murderer to brokeback, come in brokeback"

lol this thread keeps getting better and better. Charity drives, free video cards, and mohawks. And guys, I'm glad we got off the Kyle in a tutu topic ;)

kyle is too sure about this
he must have seen some demo R700 cards
spill the beans!

PICS OR SHENSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs

I find it very unlikely that R700 is released so soon. Much like R600, R700 MUST succeed in beating NVIDIA's ultra high-end, otherwise the effort is not justified. We know how that turned out for R600. Given such a short timeframe, R700 is obviously based on R600 and even though corrections will be made, I really don't know if they will be enough. Texture filling rate and AA, are some of the most important problems in R600 and to solve these, a re-design of the chip is necessary and that takes time. And this amount of time, does not fit in the early 08 time frame. Not to mention the R&D costs to re-design and test the chip, which in current AMD's financial situation, should be hard to support. Hector got a raise though...maybe they have some cash flow for this...

All in all, I doubt we'll see the ultra high-end version of R700. Maybe closer to the end of 08, but early 08 seems too soon.

As to what you asked Kyle, has ATI learned their lesson ? I certainly hope so. But it's not very smart to be in such a financial situation and bet on an ultra high-end product, based on their flawed R600. They MUST know that NVIDIA is just waiting for them to release something and then release something better.
IMO, it would be a safer bet, to invest in mid-low stuff and get some real profits, to be able to fight in the high-end in mid 2009. But this is just my opinion. AMD/ATI may very well be trying to do what you suggest in this thread Kyle.

ok so all i can say is next year should be interesting at least if amd falters we shall have some entertainment! btw if this came to pass i am sure someone close to kyle would tape it and toss it up on youtube for us :D

yeah seems he knows much more and from what i understand r700 will be good performer :D

Reading way to much between the lines are we not?
I would like to see the quotes made relating to preformance?

So far, Kyle is risking...

painting his rims ping, wearing a tutu and driving around in public
Buying $100 in stock of choice
and buying a video card

getting interesting!

You do realize that companise like ATI and Nvidia all ahve multiple teams that work on projects right? For instance, G80 was in the works before G70/G71 was even released, and the 9th series has been in the works since before G80. Companies have to look far ahead into the future to make sure they survive, but thats also why if the competition comes up with some revolutionary, they have little room to change architecture/design.

R700 has been in the pipeline before R600 was even released

Yea if Apple was to buy amd/ati, we would be stuck with just intels for Cpus for Pcs. While apple prolly start making Amds for there macs.

Even better, apple computer with ATi graphic, AMD CPU, finally we would see some serious games on MAC OS and we will have an alternative other than M$.

I dont think AMD have the funds to turn around such a large jump in technology so quickly, they couldn't touch the high end Nvidia cards on launch and struggle to keep up with their mid range cards even after all these months of optimising and the rest of that waffle.

It seems likely that Nvidia will launch STRONG in early 08 with killer next gen kit, it's going to be another jaw dropper you can just feel these things in the air and Nvidia almost constantly deliver on this front. ATI would be left launching 6+ months later (i doubt they'd be able to do any sooner than that) and chances are it would be lack luser, probably only just keep up again and be nothing worth switching camps for.

On the flip side they can wait and sit out 1/2 a generation and hit back strong BEFORE Nvidia release anything after early 08, nvidia would probably be on for late 09 at that point before we see anything more from them (think G10 range)

Constantly falling behind isn't helping anyone, them getting mediocre sales isn't a whole lot different from them not existing to begin with.

Healthy competition involves both sides winning in an even amount, not one predominantly winning and the other strugglign to keep up.
