The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

OK, so I was very frustrated by my first time doing WvWvW as a melee oriented (greatsword even...not a lot of mobility) warrior, but maybe I'll give it another shot. I've discovered I like the rifle as a ranged weapon, at least in PvE.

Well the Trading Post was up this morning so I decided to finally work on my Jewelcrafting. I really only had to buy stuff to get to 75, which is when you can move from copper to silver, or that may have been 125. Once I hit silver craftables I just flew through the levels. I have tons of collectibles from levling to 80 so I managed to go from 31-340 in about an hour with less than a gold spent and I still have 140 Mithril Ingots and probably two dozen higher level gems.

I gained at least two "levels" worth of xp. I could see myself leveling from crafting only with alts at later dates.

I'll take a guild invite, names Alero, I actually did a dynamic event with a guardian smoke and fire member the other day but hadn't figured out how to whisper people yet haha.

Has anyone figured out why Borlis Pass is utter shit in terms of WvWvW PvP? Did we just manage to attract the entire PvE crowd somehow?

we are just getting paired with higher pop servers is all, dont trip. they are rotating every 24 hours so keep an eye on it, sometimes we stomp them.

Thoughts after hitting 80 with a Guardian:
Personal Story gives good XP and drives the lore, highly recommend it.
Leveling with events is fun
Leveling with exploration is fun
Crafting gives the most XP/hr. I leveled from 77 to 80 in ~30 minutes doing high level crafting. Some discoveries were giving over 66,000 XP. The hardest thing on crafting is getting enough of the low level mats.
The artwork in the 60-80 level zones is absolutely amazing.

The level 80 zones are a PITA, but only because mobs aggro range is large and the mob density is higher than in lower zones.
There are still some bugs in game that are annoying, though not as bad as other games on release.
Broken mail and Trading Post issues are really bad, never noticed this issue in beta. Though doing fine without it.
WvWvW is pretty fun, but expensive if you die a lot. Geared toward range. As melee, it kind of blows. Though, a pack of melee can do some serious damage if they can stay tight enough for heals and focus dps.

Would I buy it again: Yes. Even as a single player game, you will get more play time out of it than other games. If with a guild or even 1 or 2 other people, it is nothing but pure fun. I've already passed my $1/hr entertainment value level.

I just hit level 35 - are the cultural tier 1 armor pieces worth buying? They seem to be decent upgrades for me but would cost 2.88 gold for the entire set. My main concern is plopping down all my gold and then only have it last me a few levels.

It's overpriced. Level 46 yellows on the AH are 10-20 silver a piece and you'll blow through the next 10 levels. I got from 30 to 52 this weekend and I feel like I didnt play THAT much. The 40-50 zones have so many chain events the exp just flowed like crazy.

Anyone else think the progression is awful in this game?

It is better than guild wars 1. There were so many times in Guild Wars 1 when I started a quest only to get half way through it and die because all the mobs were levels higher than me.

The problem with Guild Wars 2 is I can spend forever running around trying to do everything because I did all the hearts only to not be leveled enough to go to the next zone or even do my story mission.

If you make it to bloodtide Coast, make your way to the "zombie island" ASAP (its in the north-west corner of that map). You level up so quick doing 2 events back to back (one with protecting the island from the zombies and another helping the frog gather the eggs). The main event spawns pretty frequently and you can trigger the frog-egg quest right after completing the zombie island quest. Rack up some decent XP.

Also, I'm looking to join a guild. I have a lvl 63 thief and trying to decide which class I want to do next.

Those items are mainly used to be transmuted. I would save your money, and use a transmutation stone if you really like the art style. You'll find much larger upgrades once you hit 38-40

Are you gathering? Doing all of the dynamic events? The lower level zones sometimes cut it close to progressing to another zone. Don't be afraid to move to another racial zone or area either. Levels really don't matter, as you can't possibly 100% every zone before 80 anyway.

What I did with my main was after I did all the content in my starter area, I went to another zone's starter area. After that, I went to another one. Then I went back and did some of my story line.

Needless to say, I was highly out leveled for the next zones (I tied in some crafting). My main is only level 26, but I started on an alt and have it to level 10.

Try sword (main hand) and axe (off hand).

I have found this combo the be the best for pvp.

You have a leap ability (to catch up to people) a hamstring ability (slow/cripple) and a fucking great aoe "whirlwind" ability that does a TON of aoe damage and builds your adrenaline very quickly (more then any greatsword ability).

Also for wvwvw I find the longbow better then the rifle. The rifle is better at single target dps compared to the longbow, but the longbow has more aoe, and wvwvw is a ton of zerging and highly packed groups of pepole, so your aoe abilities can put it over higher damage then rifle. Plus your f1 ability on the longbow is an aoe firefield that grants melee users a "fire shield" ability when they are fighting in it.

Yep I am gathering and I did the same steps you guys outlined. I went to another areas starting zone, which to me is an issue.

I haven't played any other MMO where I had to go to another races zone just to level. It seems like a broken mechanic more than a workaround.

I've gone to multiple zones per tier. There's no reason not to and there's no reason to ever be underleveled at the next tier. In fact when I got to the 50-60 zones I was already almost 53 and it was an easy transition.

Between the story, crafting, WvW, and the events/quests, I never *had* to move outside the human starting zone to keep leveled, I mostly did it out of curiosity and to get the other starting zone skill points.

I'm still really enjoying my Elementalist. Now that I have my slot skills where I want them, I'm able to deal some serious damage without being too squishy, Dual daggers is by far my favorite for PvE, and 1v1 PvP, and Staff for WvW. I'd love to use daggers more, but the limited range means that I get focused to death way to quickly.

It's the armor from the gem store for 500 gems.

Heavy armor in the gem store looks badass. Medium armor in the gemstore looks badass. The light armor in the gem store looks like a mix between the Mighty Morphin Power Ranges and the Flash. Light armor and staves looks terrible in this game compared to heavy armor and weapons. It's like the art team did heavy armor and greatswords first, then spent 20 minutes on the rest.

i felt this way too. then i realized i can go to all of the lower zones. Ive done every lvl 15-25 zone and its just as fast at level 36 as it is leveling in hrathi highlands or whatever which is a 35 zone. i actually think doing the lower zones is faster.

just to reiterate after reading your post.. i didnt do the starter zones cause i was already level 30. so i went to the norn level 15 area which is the second zone .. that was a lot of fun.. got 100%. make sure you get 100% on the maps too.. that contributes a whole lot.

Don't get 100% on maps til you are 70+. Save one easy vista or something on each map. Rewards and exp scales. Best exp is chaining events and/or WvW. Save cooking for lvl 60+. You can get 0-400 cooking in 2 hours and get from 60-70.

Yeah i have the same problem. I gather everything, have two crafting professions, 100% zones, run to every live event, and I am currently only level 30 and finishing up a 25-35 zone.

Also the map/navigation sucks and the story mode stuff once roted me through level 31 mobs when i was level 24.

Kessex Hills at 30 should net you a level an hour event chaining. Gendarren Hills after that. Then Frog City event chains in Bloodtide after that. Doing hearts outside of event chains is probably the slowest exp you can make. Question is, do you really want to level up quickly or enjoy the content on the way to 80?

Progression in early levels can be pretty bad. I agree, some tips below.

Doing all the hearts and all the map stuff is not enough. Do events, they generate the most XP/hr.

There are certain zones, (I did mostly Char and Norn) that have chained events that the initial chain starter kicks off 2 to 3 minutes after final event is over. For example, there are "defend" -> "escort" -> "attack" chains that each one is worth 5k to 17k XP depending on level. In some zones, there are 3 to 5 events that kick off randomly around a single way point.

Depending on level, zone, group, you can level super fast. We were getting 3 to 5 levels in 3 hour sessions just farming events.

What crafting did you do? Cooking? Seems that's the best option.

Has anyone else lost 50 SILVER pieces by mistake by betting on the 'Cattlepult' in Dessia Plateau? Be careful people, it is really easy to just click through and BAM all of your money is gone.

Personally, I think it is absurd to have such a thing in a lvl 15-20 zone. Everyone adventuring there probably only has 40-60 silver saved up from when they started!!

Just got the game as a B-day gift this weekend :D First time ever playing Guild Wars 2, here's my brief impression;

Only MMO's I have played have been WoW and WarHammer...I have been playing WoW since launch, never a [H]ardcore Raider, just casual player, I enjoyed leveling in the zones and playing with buddies, doing the end game dungeons, and maybe a Raid here and there. WarHammer I liked the first few months, game had potential, but felt like an unfinished game though, too bad, it could have been really good.

GW2; Graphics; are pretty good, but not mind blowing awesome or anything. I am playing it maxed out options, on my triple screen Eyefinity setup. The graphics are hard to explain, yes it's better than WoW obviously, but for some reason not night and day better. Sure the Human city is amazing and very detailed, blows away StormWind, but the game world just looks weird for some strange reason, hard to explain. I dare say WoW zones in like Northrend almost look as good, and more clear if that makes sense ? But the cities in GW2 are a million times better looking than the capital cities in WoW, no comparison, I am more talking out questing in the game world looks different.

GW2; Characters; This one puzzles me, the character models are better than WoW, but...they don't feel real or alive like my WoW Blood Elf with full gear on. My Blood Elf with Level 85 gear looks very detailed and the animations are great for such an old game, the fluid movement and control of the WoW characters in my opinion look better than GW2. The GW2 characters moves funny, and looks like something out of Diablo3, but not as real doll like in WoW or even WarHammer. The GW2 character moves kind of clunky around the game world. Hard to pin point what the issue is, but I am not digging it.

GW2; Gameplay; To be honest I am totally lost on where to go, and what to do in the beginning. The UI is not setup like Wow or WarHammer, and I don't mean to compare these games so much, but I can't find my character avatar on the top of the screen ? And quest objectives are all the way on the right side of the screen. Is there a way to move all the info panels and map to the main center screen ? Maybe GW2 is not Eyefinity optimized yet ?

GW2 does not like Firewalls, I can't just click the game icon, and get going, I have to disable everything to get it do launch. Any work around ?

Overall impressions GW2, I like it, but for sure need more time with it, but to be honest, this game is not grabbing my attention like I thought it would, I am not burning with desire to play it like I was WoW and WarHammer back in the day. Even the quests in GW2 are a bit confusing to follow at first. Basically, like WTF am I supposed to be doing ?

I'm not sure if it's your guys zones or what.

I never once had to move to another same lv zone or starter zone and I am easily finding myself at the lv cap when I'm done with a zone.

CAledon>brisbain>Kessex>genderran is how I went.

However I do 100% on every map, I do a bit of wvwvw from time to time as well, and event chains.

If you are just doing hearts only and not exploring vista's/poi, events, etc then yea you can easily be underlv'd.

I am just finishing up Gendarren Hills. Maybe I should have done Kessex first however the game is terrible at telling people where to go next.

And i am not rushing, or i would be higher than level 30 right now :p

Brisban and Kessex are the same level range, so its not smooth progression.

your main quest line always takes you to the appropriate zone... are you doing those are you skipping ahead in the main quest?

I had about 1.6g when I did that quest.

I had about 60 silver when I finished it.

I thought it said 50 copper and was like SURE WHY NOT. Took me two times to realize what I'd done.

To level I'm doing the starter zones for each race and trying to get all the hearts. Only one of my nephews has the game so far so I switched from the Norn zone to the Charr zone to level with him. I'm already level 30 and we haven't finished clearing his zone yet. I can only imagine when we do the other starter zones as I want all the skill points anyways so I might as well get the zone clear while I'm there. Also every time I'm near someone killing an elite or group quest pops I'm in the thick of it. That helps a ton for my xp.

Tonight I'm going to do more of my personal story and level more. During the day while he's at work I'm going to farm some crafting materials for jewel crafting. The fact you can lower your level and play along wherever you want is ingenious in this title. I know they didn't invent it, but choosing to implement it was awesome!

the level scaling is so brilliant. and i like that you are a set level when you do the dungeons it makes them tough :D

most of my friends have more time then me so they are always above me in levels

LOL...I saw that and was like no thanks. It is kind of evil though. He will eventually let you get in the cannon, you don't need to bet.
