EDIT: Major feature update today. 11.1 (October 31st)

    https://www.macrumors.com/2017/10/31/apple-releases-ios-11-1-with-new-emoji/

I'm assuming that this is to coincide with the press gaining access to their iPhone X's and wanting to have maximum features launched with it. Still everyone else benefits.

    ===

It came out today at 10AM PST.

I'd like to use this thread to talk about experiences. Mostly related to performance, glitches, battery life, and features.

So, if you have an 'older' phone, say a 5S or a 6, let us know if you have slowdowns or worse battery life.
I'll let you know what my 6S Plus experience is like.

Also feel free to talk about features you like, don't like, etc.

    ===

    Macrumors feature breakdown:
    https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ios-11/

Here's the Verge's info about how to use new features in iOS:
    https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/19/16328404/apple-ios-11-review-iphone-update-control-center-how-to

    Hidden features overview from Cnet:
    https://www.cnet.com/pictures/hidden-features-in-ios-11/

    ===

I'm looking forward to the update. I'll give some thoughts later in the thread after I play around with it for a bit. I didn't participate in the beta, so I don't know what it's like to use yet.

I'm not all that pleased at how it's running on my iPhone 6. I have not done a DFU restore since running the betas though. Doesn't run that great on my iPad mini 3 either, ran the betas on it as well and have not done a restore.

I was really looking forward to the smart color invert feature, but it's not was I was hoping for. Plus there seems to be a pretty big performance penalty when it's enabled.

Seems faster on my 6s (but it was a fresh install).

The landscape mode keyboard was shrunk and the left/right cursor buttons and keyboard hide buttons are removed. This is very aggravating because I use them daily.

Another irritating change is that the Control Center wi-fi button does not actually turn wi-fi on/off anymore. Just seems to enable or disable the connection. iOS10 it would actually turn the antenna off. I always keep mine off if I'm not using it. CC was a fast way to turn it on/off.

Interesting about the Wi-Fi, I just tested it and it appears you are right. You can still turn it off manually in Settings, but that seems like an overly complicated second step for no reason. Unsure why there is a change.

For me, the only thing I've noticed so far is that it broke one of my third party widgets. Unsure if that is a problem for the Apple side or that the App needs to get updated.

Animations are new, I'm not used to how that looks visually yet. I think I'm in the same camp with some others that have said that I'm less a fan of the new font. Liked the old one better.

I wish there was more control on how Control Center actually looks. Only items that you choose to place on or off can be sorted. I also feel like visually it doesn't feel as cohesive as it did before. Having a bar that raised up and contained each button just looked more logical.
Oh well, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

So far, performance seems the same. To be determined if there is a big difference in battery or performance. I've only had it on the phone for a few hours.

So i spent an hour or two with it on my iPhone 5S. It feels just a tad bit slower but overall, definitely not a deal breaker. Would totally recommend everyone do it, especially the iphone 6 and 6s crowd. I love the little things they've improved!

Thank you guys. After reading and the fact that I will lose 179 apps I paid for on the iPhone 6 plus. And 133 apps I paid for on the iPad Air 2. I will not upgrade to iOS 11.

Really? You must have a lot of apps that are no longer in development then. I don't think I lost a single app in the upgrade.
I certainly don't have or use as many as you do, but they are across a wide range of fields.

What are some key apps that you'd lose just out of curiosity?

You use 179 paid apps that never got updated since the 32 bit days? Calling bullshit on this one.

You tell that to Apple. My phone says there are 179 apps that will not work with iOS 11. NO BULLSHIT!

Appreciate the dark mode - wish it went the full distance and was a true dark mode, but it’s better than nothing.

Also - period key moved in default keyboard, it’s much easier for me to thumb type without.hitting.the.period.instead.of.space.

Haven’t really noticed anything with battery life on a 6S yet but it’s only been a day.

Haven’t dug into Files yet, other than to open it and see that nope, I don’t use iCloud so it’s empty.

All the apps I use on a daily basis have been well supported and work fine. I’m sure if I dug through my entire Purchased list there are many that would no longer work.

The new App Store layout is different, but I dont do a lot of just browsing there without a specific app I’m already searching for.

Siri does sound less moronic, but I’ve never felt comfortable talking at my phone, and easily get frustrated when it misunderstands and I can’t easily correct, so it’s always been a feature I use sparingly.

Really, apart from a few minor UI cues, the new Control Center, and some new icons for default apps, I would be hard pressed to notice any major changes on the surface.

Expanding more on my comments about the new Wifi Control Center "feature"; if you disable Wifi using this "feature" and put your phone to sleep, it turns the icon back to blue but doesn't seem to connect when you wake the phone. They have really reduced the functionality of that button. Almost completely removed all use for that button.

Also, does anyone know how to bring back the old keyboard that has more buttons?

Jesus...How many apps do you have total on your phone. I thought I was bad at ~100ish. I think I had like one or two that wouldn't run after they starting blocked 32bit apps in the betas.

Way to many. I started back with the iPhone 3. What ever stop working I took off. I just update my iPad Air 2 to iOS11. And lost way to many. I’m leaving my iPhone 6 Plus alone, no update to iOS11 for it.

Anybody know how to get rid of all the damn app icons that appear in iMessages (before the keyboard is pulled up). I have shit like Goat Simulator showing up and I doubt that does anything with iMessage...

    Edit:
Nvm...gave it another two seconds and I figured it out. Scroll to to the far right of the list, hit the (...) button then hit Edit on the next screen. From there you can remove all but the App store button.

You'd prefer to hoard apps rather than update to a newer version of iOS with new features and bugfixes?

Yep why not. Look iOS11 now has a problem. When you shut WiFi or Bluetooth off they really don’t shut off. There is a Bugfix that is not fixed!

Maybe you run out buy the New Apple Watch Series 3! Why because it is Apple. But wait they just found out the New Apple Watch Series 3 has a problem it doesn’t connect to LTE like they said it would. But it’s Apple!

I like the look of iOS 11 on my iPad Pro, especially the new Control Center. Swiping to access multitasking is a nice addition, too. All I use my iPad for is media consumption (e-books, video streaming, etc.). The apps I need are updated and work fine.

How's performance on the iPhone 6?

I'm waiting until I hear more before upgrading my aging phone. Learned my lesson on iOS 7 with the iPhone 4...

iOS 11 bugs will get fixed. All the iOS 10 bugs and vulnerabilities are set in stone now. So enjoy those. Still running Windows XP too?

Nope Windows 7! And I have never had a problem with any of the iPhones I still owe. 3, 4, 5 and 6 plus. You said all the bugs in iOS10 are set in stone. Well that can be said about all the versions of iOS and 11 when iOS 12 comes out!!! HAHAHA

A few more things from me. (On 128GB iPhone 6S Plus)

    Notes on Speed:
-Safari seems much faster. Notably in scrolling.
-Animations sometimes seem jittery. They aren't slow though, so that's good.
-Unlock speed seems as fast as ever, maybe faster. It also is much faster when using raise to wake. In iOS 10, often using raise to wake and then resting your thumb on TouchID, it would unlock the phone while staying on the lock screen. This made pressing the home button a requirement in addition to unlocking. Now when using raise to wake and TouchID, it immediately kicks you to the home screen. It seems minor, but I appreciate this improvement.
-App loading and app switching seem quick and mostly seamless.

    Some other notes:
-I too hate the drag and drop context menu at the bottom of messages. It seems like too much clutter for a feature that I won't often, if ever, use. (Why was Fallout Shelter there by default?)
-Search seems MUCH worse. I use search a lot, because sometimes it's faster than going through icons, or I can't remember the exact name of an app, or precisely which folder I placed an app in. I typed in "Voice" and didn't even get an app. I had to complete type out "Voice Memos" to have it appear in search. My personal preference is to have search go after things on the phone first, most particularly apps, now it seems like it's just a glorified web search bar, which is far less useful to me.

    ===

EDIT: Just figured out the search function. In settings ==> "Siri & Search" there is granular by app, what shows up in search. I turned off basically all the apps in iOS 10 because I'm not a fan of Apple learning about me or using my search information. This however didn't prevent apps from showing up in search before. Now it does. So I would say this, like the control center "wi-fi" shutoff issue is worse than iOS 10.

They moved out the auto brightness setting from "display and brightness" tab.... some bass ackward stuff, but in general it's ok. The wifi and Bluetooth stuff is silly though.

So far, I don't feel the need to replace my 6s plus. Saw the new ones in the store and they do feel snappier, but not enough to warrant a new purchase.

Not a fan of the new control center in regards with media playback controls, but that's subjective.

NOT digging iOS 11. It takes FOREVER to send someone a pic over iMessage now on my iPhone 7 Plus. I’m probably downgrading all of our iOS devices back to iOS 10. Everything seems slower to me compared with iOS10

It is more than likely a data issue. Either on your side or theirs. Especially if you’re sending it to a non-iOS/non-messages device. You could try sending the image in “Low Quality Image Mode”. Found in Settings => Messages

Nah, it isn’t. My phone chokes like an old man eating soup when I have a picture on my phone and click “send to”. Takes like 30 seconds to bring up the iMessage app.

Chokes before I even get to iMessage (recipient is also iMessage iPhone 7 Plus).

I just took a screenshot, click the icon to choose what to do, chose message, typed in my brothers name, selected him, and it sent it in 2 seconds. Maybe your install is messed up, or maybe low on free memory with a bunch of apps open?

I don’t have a bunch of apps open. Install messed up - yeah that’s possible. We have 2 iPhone 7 pluses and an iPad Air and all are slower on iOS 11 than 10. I’ll be downgrading back to 10 tonight.

I would say iOS 11 is an improvement in performance across the board on my iPhone 6s. I was beginning to experience quite a few slowdowns before upgrading.

Been using the wife’s old 6S on iOS 11 now and I love it. Works just great on the 6S.

    My experience these 2 days

5S on iOS 11 - definitely slower than 10.3 but still ok

6S on iOS 11 - just as fast, if not faster in some areas than 10.3. Loving it so far on the 6S

8 on iOS 11 - phone is a complete beast, would put plenty of laptops to shame.

I've been using iOS 11 since June when the developer beta started, and yes there were some horrid betas that came thru, but iOS 11 is really running well now. On my iPhone 6 Plus it ran very well, but it is blazingly fast on my iPhone 8 Plus now. I haven't seen any bugs so far in my use, and boy were there bugs in some of those betas!

Just got it installed. Steaming pile of shit, just like my new iPhone 8 is so far. Seriously, I don't know who the hell put together everything here, but I'm 2 days into trying to get the new phone updated, IOS 11 working on my old phone (so I can get a backup to restore), and I'm just about done.

If another apple employee tells me to install iTunes somewhere, I'm going to shove my foot so far down their throat I'll be able to pull their balls out with my toes.

After a week or so of use, I've mostly become comfortable with iOS 11. I don't use many of the new deep features. It mostly is business as usual, and I'm okay with that.

I'd say that the only new issue I have is with the way that the audio player is handled. I often use the music player while driving and using Waze. The new player requires brining up control center and then click popping the player to bring up more info on what is playing and also to interact with it more.

I suppose the intention was that most people would be satisfied with "previous song, play, next song". But I often scroll through tracks. The old method of just being able to swipe up and swipe down and just have the player there was better for my style of usage. Still getting used to the new way I guess.

no issues here on 8+ or previous 7+ , new control panel is nice and the screenshot and ability to annotate photos is nice. not really much to complain about, also have is on a couple of SE phones, and and 8 and no issues really
