I recently upgraded my old E8400 system to a 771 xeon with a sticker adapter and modded bios. I also freed up several 1 GB DDR2 sticks (1 mushkin 996576 and 2 mushkin 996684 sticks), although that might not be an upgrade. If you're interested in the memory or even a 775-to-771 sticker dropped in an envelope (I bought 3 just in case, ended up using one), let me know. The 771 mod was fun, might not be something to do to an elderly friend's only computer.
I second the recommendation on the e8600--we have a point of sale system that can only take duals and an upgrade to the e8600 really woke it up thanks to the fast single thread performance:

If you can't get the e8600, the e8500 is a nice alternative that's also dirt cheap ($5.50):

The technical guide for the 755 doesn't show processor support higher than q6700, but also shows this across the board for the MT, DT, and SFF form factors. The MT and DT are known to be able to take a q9650, so I have no reason to doubt the SFF can do it too. But it will be important to think about the overall power consumption of the system from all the components (gpu, memory, drive, etc) as you will be stressing an already old power supply that could give up the ghost in a puff of smoke.
There were a few LGA775 xeons that were the equivalent on the q6600, q9650, et al, and can be found cheaper at times as people don't know this. You need to have bios support, but I've found the Dells do have the proper microcode to support these as I'm running a x3360 in a optiplex 330-380 hybrid:

A good resource for current lga771/775 prices is here:
https://www.delidded.com/lga-771-775-cpus/
LGA 771 processors are usually the same price as the LGA 775 processors they were cheaper than back in the day, so there's no real advantage to trying this mod anymore other than to just do it. I haven't done it and found that it would be a waste of time since processor prices are so cheap.
I have an E6750 collecting dust, free.99, shipping should be <$5. Yours if you want it.Does anyone have a Core 2 Duo (E6550, E6750 or a E6850) or a Core 2 Quad (Q6600, or a Q6700) laying around collecting dust? The computer in question is a Dell OptiPlex 755 SFF with the Q35 (ICH9D0) The CPU currently in there is an E2180. I could also use DDR 2 as it currently only has 3GB (The max is 8GB with 4 slots each with a 2GB DIMM). This is for an older friend of mine that I am looking to help out on the cheap as she does not have a lot of money
PS: I have gave away lots of good things before. The [H]ardForum Perpetual Freebies Thread

I didn't make it through all the posts in the link you provided so forgive me if I am asking an already asked question: any idea on specs of the Mini's? And price is cost of shipping? TIA!
Edit: Ok, made it through the other thread. If you have any left, I wouldn't mind adding a G4 Mini to my Mac collection
WANT: motherboard standoffs looking for at least 5.
Will this work for you?
Yup!

OK, it's a basic heatsink but should do the job. Only thing is you may need to swap the fan. It's a 80 or 92mm but I believe it is a non standard hp fan connector. Will check it out and let you know.its an i7 970, but I don't have to push it, I just want to limp along till my parts come

Any chance you have any of the minis still available?
Pcie 2.0 and 3.0 are reverse compatible.Looking for an upgrade from a XFX Radeon 5850 to pass on to my son, so needs to be PCI-e 2.0. Being that it's an old ass card, most of the stuff I'm seeing in the normal channels are 3.0

Oh really? I didn't think they would be (I've clearly been out of the game for a while). Thanks for the heads up.
Any old networking gear floating around
Patch Panel
Gigabit Switch
APs

A model would be great so I can look at the batteriesI have an older UPS that I upgraded from...I'd have to get you the model # if you're interested. It's not rack mount, but it's decent capacity (I'm thinking 1000-1250VA).
The batteries died of old age and rather than replace them as I've done in other units, I ended up getting a good deal on a new one. So the "catch" is that you'd have to put fresh batteries in it, but honestly, you probably wouldn't want to pay the shipping for it if it did have batteries installed (as you know, most UPSes of any decent size/capacity are very heavy). The shell itself should be fairly inexpensive to ship.
