The Evil Within

It's still choppy for me, too. Afterburner lists me as being at 59-60fps all of the time, but it doesn't look or feel like it. In fact, it reminds me of turning on "smoothmotion" for a 30fps console game.

Yes everyone that has tried 60 realizes its actually worse looking and feeling overall than 30. Sure wish they would fix that.

Maybe something internal is still locked to 30, while technically the renderer is doing more or something of the sort.

glass half empty on everything today?...LOTF is a severely bugged game...major issues...as far as TEW...creative intent is not something that should be compromised...if they really felt that 30 fps was the way it was meant to be played then they wouldn't/shouldn't have changed anything...it's obvious that they caved to public pressure but they also used the 30 fps as an excuse to cover up performance issues

It's from a Japanese developer. They often set a frame rate and then build around it, throwing the frame rate off will screw with the game. At times it's done for cinematic reasons, like this game, in other games like Street Fighter it's because some timing issues in the mechanics are bound to frame rates for consistency (ie combos). Japanese developers and American developers don't approach things the same way.

If you don't want borders and set frame rates, stick to games made by developers from regions that don't do that. Like it or not the US market isn't the most important market to many developers, and the PC portion of that market means even less. The majority of people who like Japanese developers always grab them on Japanese platforms, and if possible the native version to avoid the chance of America Mode (reduced difficulty).

Being a vocal minority doesn't make you any less of a minority, and complaining loudly doesn't make you the intended audience. Getting upset about this stuff is like going to a steakhouse and throwing a fit about beef, and then screaming about a conspiracy against the vegan master race. You're free to do it, but it isn't going to make the world revolve around you, and it doesn't make you any less wrong.

the fact that they made these latest letterbox/60 fps changes with the latest patch shows that the US PC market carries a lot of power...vegetarian restaurant that started serving steak

I wish they never included this weird false 60fps option in the first place. Had they not, maybe someone in the community would have "fixed" it by now.

This patch made performance so much worse on my machine... I was getting 70-80 FPS with 1.78x DSR (1440p) and now it's a stutter fest. Even when turning the resolution back down to 1080p it won't do more than 40 FPS average with the framerate unlocked now. It has turned 60+ FPS gameplay into a nightmare. So now I have to play at 1080p locked to 30 FPS...

The good news is that the new letterbox removal option does just that now instead of zooming in. So it's like using Flawless Widescreen with the default FOV. The HDR bug when using FWS is also not present. The bad news is cutscenes are still letterboxed, and the HUD is placed on the screen like the borders are still there. I will prefer the FWS solution to the built-in once the plugin has been updated to work with the new version of the game.

Have a GTX 970 on the way arriving tomorrow. I'm glad I held off on this game for a bit to play Bayonetta 2. Now I can play the rest with all of the settings up. It was running well enough as it was, completely enjoyable, but I did decrease a few things to get it running that way on the 660.

It's almost like whining about whining on the internet.

just finished the demo. pretty fun game. i was surprised at how open the town area was. i fucked up when trying to kill the first boss by wasting all my shit on accident, but i still managed to kill him. was getting ~40 fps at 1080p max settings. it looks very good and it's fairly slow, so i wasn't too upset over the framerate. i might buy it when it goes on sale.

demo was definitely fun and made me interested in playing the full game...but my original stance still stands that it doesn't seem worth $60...Steam sale for sure but not full price

Probably worth mentioning, the stutter associated with 60fps is actually less noticeable with a mouse than a gamepad. I think that might be why some people aren't seeing it. With a mouse, it's still a little wonky, but it's surprisingly better.

I'm noticing the same thing. I upgraded to a GTX 970 over the weekend. The game now actually looks like it's "mostly" moving at 60fps. I play it with a mouse, and tracked slowly and steadily, and it does look like it's drawing something "near" 60fps. I'm not seeing any true hitching, but there is some component of it that makes it look a little slower/chunkier. I'm not sure if it's the lighting, maybe a shader effect, or what. Something makes it not look as smooth as say Wolfenstein or RAGE. It still looks better on 60fps mode to me though at this point. Just not quite what I'd expect at that rate.

I have tested the crap out of this game. 30 fps locked is smooth except for the usual jittery crap associated with low framerates. 60 feels a little smoother at times but has this fairly consistent hitch when panning around. With framerate unlocked it does not have the hitch at really high framerates. It also varies from area to area. Anyone that thinks 60 fps feels and looks right in this game needs their brain examined. And the mouse feels worse to me in all instances. I will just stick to controller and 30 fps as its the best overall feeling from what I have seen.

It definitely doesn't look right for 60fps, but on my system, it looks better than 30. I'm not getting what I'd consider a hitch when panning. It's not quite silk like the other Tech 5 games, but it doesn't hitch. It's more like a consistent jitter across the range. Which to me isn't quite as pronounced as limitation of 30fps. I don't know what else might be playing a part in the overall performance. Your system is a lot faster than mine. I'm on X58 with a Xeon, 12GB (x3 channels) and a GTX 970. Doesn't matter much. I'd love to see it silky smooth, but it's playing acceptably right now IMO. It could do better, but it's not too bad. VSync is forced through the driver, triple buffering is forced as well. Otherwise the rest of the driver settings are default.

Vsync forced through the driver does not even work at all for me. And this game uses DX11 so triple buffering does nothing anyway.

Wtf No Gsync at 60 fps because the game forces Vsync, I tried the demo and was shocked who shitty it is. DELETE

got around to playing the demo earlier today...wasn't until Chapter 3 that I felt the game really delivered...still doesn't feel like an amazing must-play kind of game but it seems fun...definitely challenging...the survival horror aspect is well done with the scarcity of ammo and lack of unlimited stamina etc

but the graphics are borderline terrible for a modern game...only the lighting is top notch...everything else is way too dark and washed out with a lot of low res textures...camera controls are clunky...even with the 60 fps patch the game still feels sluggish...I also had numerous crashes...have they patched the game recently or was the 60 FPS addition the final patch?

toyed around with the 30 fps cap and letterbox format and was shocked how much screen space the black bars take up...what were they thinking?...black bars with the Assassin's Creed series and other games are barely noticeable but this thing takes up around 50% of the screen

The 60fps/black bar patch was the last one. I have a feeling that will probably be the case going forward. If you don't like it, "you didn't get their vision" and all of that noise.

Playing this game with Flawless Widescreen, and I have no idea what some people were talking about...

1) The game is scary as shit, which is a WELCOME change from everything after RE0 where it's all action no horror (and I liked RE0). But then again I'm playing on Survivor difficulty with a good sound system. Like watching a movie, you really need a good sound setup to appreciate things. I can imagine how $5 headphones could make this seem like a bland B movie.

2) Visuals are beautiful, at least on my rig @ 3440x1440 and with Flawless Widescreen fixes. It's horrible with the black bars, so I'm glad this came to the PC for a proper fix. The opening cutscene (mostly the horrible vehicle models and the last-gen facial expressions) could use some work though, and leave a bad first impression. I think maybe the car intro is a throwback to RE4's car intro, or a metaphor for how we the audience are going on a trip (to hell?)...

Come to think of it, RE0-4 all have some sort of transportation in their intros for the main hero/heroin involved. I don't think CVX did, but I can't remember right now.

3) No performance issues here, but I guess I'm playing the game a bit later than most. Maybe things were fixed? Link to rig specs are in my signature.

Skimming through reviews of the game, I'm pretty sure most of the reviewers only played it for a couple hours before dismissing it due to its difficulty. The controls are a notch more responsive than RE4's; those expecting radical changes will be disappointed, but I kinda came into this expecting a spiritual successor to where RE series left off after Shinji Mikami left Capcom. Also, the intro cutscene seems deceptively bland compared to the rest of the game. I can see how this was done purposely in order to jar the viewer later, but I'm still too early in to be sure.

This brings me back to RE3 times, when games were actually challenging, pushed you to keep going even when you die 10 times in the same spot, and didn't hold you by the hand to tell you where you need to go next...

AND I LOVE IT! Thank you for another masterpiece, Shinji Mikami!

Reading your comments make me want to go back and play it more. Gotta put down the CS GO crack pipe.

I love when a game comes out and a person loves it but sees that it got lower scores then he thinks it deserved...so he then proceeds to rationalize and dispute every major review that gave it less then amazing reviews...the game got a lot of 7 and 8's because the reviewers played the entire game and felt it deserved the scores it got

if you love the game so be it but please don't try and convince everyone that their reviews are wrong and you are the only one that sees this game for the masterpiece that you believe it to be...after playing only the demo I see this as being more gory then scary...I have an excellent dedicated 5.1 speaker system but that is only for my plasma TV...I have a dedicated monitor and average 5.1 speakers for my computer but I do agree that the sound is first rate...overall I can see the game getting better after Chapter 3 and being a good game...but not $60 good...the visuals and graphics are what the developer intended but that doesn't mean it was the right choice (I still believe the performance issues are what necessitated the 30 fps cap and giant letterbox 'cinematic' approach)

after replaying the Evil Within demo a 2nd time I think I changed my mind...after understanding the mechanics and gameplay the game is pretty good...a very nice horror game...game still has its faults but is worth picking up for a good price during a Steam sale

It really is a pretty good game. I wouldn't have paid $60 either, but got it for whatever GMG was selling it for. I think around $40, and it's exceptionally good at that price.

I feel like it's a cheap knock-off of The Last of Us. The stealth mechanics are random and frustrating instead of fun.

it's $20.39 on steam right now

Not worth it. This game is a snooze fest and runs and plays like shit. Looks like a game from 2010 plays like a game from 2020. Oh and it also has that weird Asian 'quirkiness' that just kills immersion in some parts of the game. I have no idea why Asian game developers always have to have an element of "Disney" in their games, especially a survivor-horror game.

I bit at $16.

I'm not far in but I played around with video settings and it seemed that even when dropping all settings with FPS set to 60, the game still ran a little rough even though my GPU (GTX 780) load was only around 50%. With what little experience I've had so far, it seems that just cranking everything and running at 30 FPS with motion blur enabled gives a consistent experience. I typically disable motion blur but decided to try to see if it could give a better illusion of smoothness with 30 FPS and that seems to be what it does.

So while I would typically prefer a nice 60 FPS experience, I'll probably stick with 30 FPS + motion blur for this game.

When do they plan on releasing some DLC? I hope they have more than just the "Kidman" story line, from what I've heard it will only be a few hours of gameplay. I really liked the game and hope to get some more playtime.

I just want one spoiler with not many details:

Does the chainsaw guy at the beginning A) continually terrorize you throughout the game or B) get killed off at some point and leave forever?

I just want yes or no to A and B. I let this stuff get to me too much.

A. Not really
B. Yes and No

Don't think about it too much and just keep playing.

This game got a large patch out of nowhere...and now it actually looks pretty good at 60fps! No more weird choppiness. It isn't perfect, but it's much better.

The framerate is much higher but its the EXACT same choppiness for me at 60 fps as before this patch. It still has more noticeable hitches when panning at 60 fps than 30 fps.
